This extends the /json/typing endpoint to also accept
stream_id and topic. With this change, the requests
sent to /json/typing should have these:
* `to`: a list set to
- recipients for a PM
- stream_id for a stream message
* `topic`, in case of stream message
along with `op`(start or stop).
On receiving a request with stream_id and topic, we send
typing events to clients with stream_typing_notifications set
to True for all users subscribed to that stream.
This commit adds support for a `None` option in the dropdown menu
of `Notification sound`. When this option is selected, no audible
notification is sent to the user.
`None` will appear as the first option in the dropdown menu, since
this is not categorized as a playable audio.
This new option is added so that folks can disable audio notifications
without losing their other notification configuration (like for PMs, mentions).
Necessary test case is added for this new option.
Fixes#16090.
model__id syntax implies needing a JOIN on the model table to fetch the
id. That's usually redundant, because the first table in the query
simply has a 'model_id' column, so the id can be fetched directly.
Django is actually smart enough to not do those redundant joins, but we
should still avoid this misguided syntax.
The exceptions are ManytoMany fields and queries doing a backward
relationship lookup. If "streams" is a many-to-many relationship, then
streams_id is invalid - streams__id syntax is needed. If "y" is a
foreign fields from X to Y:
class X:
y = models.ForeignKey(Y)
then object x of class X has the field x.y_id, but y of class Y doesn't
have y.x_id. Thus Y queries need to be done like
Y.objects.filter(x__id__in=some_list)
This commit adds an API to `zproject/urls.py` to edit/update
the realm linkifier. Its helper function to update the
database is added in `zerver/lib/actions.py`.
`zulip.yaml` is documented accordingly as well, clearly
stating that this API updates one linkifier at a time.
The tests are added for the API and helper function which
updates the realm linkifier.
Fixes#10830.
Linkifier error message: `Filter not found` is
updated to `Linkifier not found.`.
Similarly, `filter_id` description is updated to:
`The ID of the linkifier that you want to remove.`,
renamed the term `filter` with `linkifier`, in `zulip.yaml`.
We move compose.html to compose.hbs file while keeping
`#compose` still in `home.html` as a hanger
where append rest of the elements.
This will provide us with two benefits:
* We could share common elements between message_edit_form and
compose.
* We can insert compose directly in any element. We may decide to
do it for recent topics.
This prevents us from having to json encode every field in the POST
request to /realm/playgrounds, and keeps the client logic simpler
when adding a playground.

This wasn't being validated before. There wasn't any possibility to
actually succeed in moving a private message, because the codepath would
fail at assert message.is_stream_message() in do_update_message - but we
should have proper error handling for that case instead of internal
server errors.
Otherwise an admin can move a topic from a private stream they're no
longer a part of - including the newest messages in the topic, that
they're not supposed to have access to.
A bug in the implementation of the topic moving API resulted in
organization administrators being able to move messages to streams they
shouldn't be allowed to - private streams they weren't subscribed to and
streams in other organization hosted by the same Zulip installation.
In our current model realm admins can't send messages to private streams
they're not subscribed to - and being able move messages to a
stream effectively allows to send messages to that stream and thus the
two need to be consistent.
A bug in the implementation of the all_public_streams API feature
resulted in guest users being able to receive message traffic to public
streams that should have been only accessible to members of the
organization.
A bug in the implementation of the can_forge_sender permission
(previously is_api_super_user) resulted in users with this permission
being able to send messages appearing as if sent by a system bots,
including to other organizations hosted by the same Zulip installation.
- The send message API had a bug allowing an api super user to
use forging to send messages to other realms' streams, as a
cross-realm bot. We fix this most directly by eliminating the
realm_str parameter - it is not necessary for any valid current use
case. The email gateway doesn't use this API despite the comment in
that block suggesting otherwise.
- The conditionals inside access_stream_for_send_message are changed up
to improve security. They were generally not ordered very well,
allowing the function to successfully return due to very weak
acceptance conditions - skipping the higher importance checks that
should lead to raising an error.
- The query count in test_subs is decreased because
access_stream_for_send_message returns earlier when doing its check
for a cross-realm bot sender - some subscription checking queries are
skipped.
- A linkifier test in test_message_dict needs to be changed. It didn't
make much sense in the first place, because it was creating a message
by a normal user, to a stream outside of the user's realm. That
shouldn't even be allowed.
Organization admins can use this setting to restrict the maximum
rating of GIFs that will be retrieved from GIPHY. Also, there
is option to disable GIPHY too.
* This introduces a new event type `realm_linkifiers` and
a new key for the initial data fetch of the same name.
Newer clients will be expected to use these.
* Backwards compatibility is ensured by changing neither
the current event nor the /register key. The data which
these hold is the same as before, but internally, it is
generated by processing the `realm_linkifiers` data.
We send both the old and the new event types to clients
whenever the linkifiers are changed.
Older clients will simply ignore the new event type, and
vice versa.
* The `realm/filters:GET` endpoint (which returns tuples)
is currently used by none of the official Zulip clients.
This commit replaces it with `realm/linkifiers:GET` which
returns data in the new dictionary format.
TODO: Update the `get_realm_filters` method in the API
bindings, to hit this new URL instead of the old one.
* This also updates the webapp frontend to use the newer
events and keys.
* Don't require strings to be unnecessarily JSON-encoded.
* Use check_capped_string rather than custom code for length checks.
* Update frontend to pass the right parameters.
With a much simplified populate_data_for_request design suggested by
Anders; we only support a handful of data types, all of which are
correctly encoded automatically by jQuery.
Fixes part of #18035.
Previously, when unmuting a user, we used to make
two database fetches - one to verify that the user
is has been muted before, and one while actually
unmuting the user.
This reduces that to one, by passing around the
`MutedUser` object fetched in the first round.
Since the new function returns `Optional[MutedUser]`,
we need to use a hack for events tests, because
mypy does not yet use the type inferred from
`assert foo is not None` in nested functions like lambdas.
See python/mypy@8780d45507.
This was used by the old native Zulip Android app
(zulip/zulip-android). That app has been undeveloped for enough years
that we believe it no longer functions; as a result, there's no reason
to keep a prototype API endpoint for it (that we believe never worked).
This endpoint was needed by the ancient pre-electron desktop app
written in QT; we removed support for that in practice a long time
ago, and even the custom error messages for it in
5a22e73cc6.
So we can delete this endpoint as well.
We keep the error message same for all cases when a user is not
allowed to subscribe others for all values of invite_to_stream_policy.
We raise error with different message for guest cases because it
is handled by decorators. We aim to change this behavior in future.
Explaining the details in error message isn't much important as
we do not show errors probably in API only, as we do not the show
the options itself in the frontend.

We add moderators and full members option to invite_to_realm_policy
by using COMMON_POLICY_TYPES and use can_invite_others_to_realm helper
added in previous commit. This commit only does the backend work,
frontend work will be done in separate commit.
This commit replaces invite_by_admins_policy, which was a bool field,
with a new enum field invite_by_realm_policy.
Though the final goal is to add moderators and full members option
using COMMON_POLICY_TYPES, but this will be done in a separate
commit to make this easy for review.
We send the whole data set as a part of the event rather than
doing an add/remove operation for couple of reasons:
* This would make the client logic simpler.
* The playground data is small enough for us to not worry
about performance.
Tweaked both `fetch_initial_state_data` and `apply_events` to
handle the new playground event.
Tests added to validate the event matches the expected schema.
Documented realm_playgrounds sections inside /events and
/register to support our openapi validation system in test_events.
Tweaked other tests like test_event_system.py and test_home.py
to account for the new event being generated.
Lastly, documented the changes to the API endpoints in
api/changelog.md and bumped API_FEATURE_LEVEL.
Tweaked by tabbott to add an `id` field in RealmPlayground objects
sent to clients, which is essential to sending the API request to
remove one.
Similar to the previous commit, we have added a `do_*` function
which does the deletion from the DB. The next commit handles sending
the events when both adding and deleting a playground entry.
Added the openAPI format data to zulip.yaml for DELETE
/realm/playgrounds/{playground_id}. Also added python and curl
examples to remove-playground.md.
Tests added.
This endpoint will allow clients to create a playground entry
containing the name, pygments language and url_prefix for the
playground of their choice.
Introduced the `do_*` function in-charge of creating the entry in
the model. Handling the process of sending events which will be
done in a follow up commit.
Added the openAPI format data to zulip.yaml for POST
/realm/playgrounds. Also added python and curl examples for using
the endpoint in its markdown documented (add-playground.md).
Tests added.
Adds backend code for the mute users feature.
This is just infrastructure work (database
interactions, helpers, tests, events, API docs
etc) and does not involve any behavioral/semantic
aspects of muted users.
Adds POST and DELETE endpoints, to keep the
URL scheme mostly consistent in terms of `users/me`.
TODOs:
1. Add tests for exporting `zulip_muteduser` database table.
2. Add dedicated methods to python-zulip-api to be used
in place of the current `client.call_endpoint` implementation.
This is a prep change to eventually completely
replace the term "filter" with "linkifier" in
the codebase.
This only renames files. Code changes will be
done in further commits.
We use GIPHY web SDK to create popover containing GIFs in a
grid format. Simply clicking on the GIFs will insert the GIF in the compose
box.
We add GIPHY logo to compose box action icons which opens the GIPHY
picker popover containing GIFs with "Powered by GIPHY"
attribution.
Instead of validating `op` value later, this commit does that
in `REQ`.
Also helps avoiding duplication of this validation when
stream typing notifications feature is added.
This adds the is_user_active with the appropriate code for setting the
value correctly in the future. In the following commit a migration to
backfill the value for existing Subscriptions will be added.
To ensure correct user_profile.is_active handling also in tests, we
replace all direct .is_active mutation with calls to appropriate
functions.
The moderators-only option was actually added in the previous
commit for create_stream_policy as we use the same function
'has_permission' for both the policies. But we add the error
handling code and tests for moderators-only option in this
commit.
In 1a12e112d9, this page was converted
to use portico styling, but we intentionally left this page not using
the portico_content class since we didn't want the header/footer.
We still don't want the header/footer clutter, so instead, we achieve
that same goal using the isolated_page flag.
This is part of our general process of replacing emails, which are not
static with time, with user_ids when referring to users in the API.
We still keep the `email` reference option, since it can be useful for
linking third-party applications to Zulip on an intranet that might
have a user's corporate email handy and not want to do the extra round
trip to lookup the user.
The name of the parameter, user_id_or_email, was chosen to to make it
clear that the default/preferred option is user_id.
Fixes#14304.
TextField is used to allow users to set long stream + topic narrow
names in the urls.
We currently restrict users to only set "all_messages" and
"recent_topics" as narrows.
This commit achieves 3 things:
* Removes recent topics as the default view which loads when
hash is empty.
* Loads default_view when hash is empty.
* Loads default_view on pressing escape key when it is unhandled by
other present UI elements.
NOTE: After this commit loading zulip with an empty hash will
automatically set hash to default_view. Ideally, we'd just display
the default view without a hash, but that involves extra complexity.
One exception is when user is trying to load an overlay directly,
i.e. zulip is loaded with an overlay hash. In this case,
we render recent topics is background irrespective of default_view.
We consider this last detail to be a bug not important enough to block
adding this setting.
Add new rest api endpoint GET users/{email} for looking up a user by
email, which is useful especially for corporate API applications that
might already have a user's email address.
Fixes#14302.
zerver/lib/users.py has a function named access_user_by_id, which is
used in /users views to fetch a user by it's id. Along with fetching
the user this function also does important validations regarding
checking of required permissions for fetching the target user.
In an attempt to solve the above problem this commit introduces
following changes:
1. Make all the parameters except user_profile, target_user_id
to be keyword only.
2. Use for_admin parameter instead of read_only.
3. Adds a documentary note to the function describing the reason for
changes along with recommended way to call this function in future.
4. Changes in views and tests to call this function in this changed
format.
Changes were tested using ./tools/test-backend.

c2526844e9 removed the `signups` queue
worker, and the command-line tool that enqueues to it -- but not the
automated process that enqueues during signups itself.
Remove the signup, since it is no longer in use.
In the case of reusing a registration link, reuse the
redirect_to_email_login_url helper. This does have the side effect of
now showing a "you've already registered" note, which did not happen
previously, but that seems probably for the best, since the user did
just click a "register" link.
ecfafc05c0 shifted to using a different paramter name to hint that
the user had previously signed up -- and in so doing also stopped
pre-filling the "email" box. Also send along the email box, to save
users time.
Checking for `validate_email_not_already_in_realm` again (after the
form already did so), but only in the case that the form fails to
validate, means that we may be spending time pushing totally invalid
emails to the DB to check. In the case of emails containing nulls,
this can even trigger a 500 error from PostgreSQL.
Stop calling `validate_email_not_already_in_realm` in the form
validation. The form is currently only used in two places -- in
`accounts_home` and in `maybe_send_to_registration`. The latter is
only called if the address is known to not currently have an account,
so checking in there is unnecessary; and in the former case, we wish
different behaviour (the redirect) than just validation failure, which
is all the validator can do.

Allowing any admins to create arbitrary users is not ideal because it
can lead to abuse issues. We should require something stronger that
requires the server operator's approval and thus we add a new
can_create_users permission.
We always want to do these at the same time. Previously, message
editing did too much stripping (fixes#16837) and failed to check for
NUL bytes.

If a user visits a realm which has been deactivated and it's
deactivated_redirect field is set, we should have a message telling the

tests for the function parse_anchor_value.

This simplifies the code, as it allows using the mechanism of converting
JsonableErrors into a response instead of having separate, but
ultimately similar, logic in RateLimitMiddleware.
We don't touch tests here because "rate limited" error responses are
already verified in test_external.py.
Then because the ID is now part of the draft dict, we can
(and do) change the structure of the "drafts" parameter
returned from `GET /drafts` from an object (mapping ID to
data) to an array.

This class removes a lot of the annoying tuples
we were passing around.
Also, by including the user everywhere, which
is easily available to us when we make instances
of SubInfo, it sets the stage to remove
select_related('user_profile').
This is a pure extraction, except that I remove a
redundant check that `len(principals) > 0`. Whenever
that value is false, then `new_subscriptions` will
only have one possible entry, which is the current
user, and we skip that in the loop.
I think it's important that the callers understand
that bulk_add_subscriptions assumes all streams
are being created within a single realm, so I make
it an explicit parameter.
This may be overkill--I would also be happy if we
just included the assertions from this commit.
ssh always runs its command through a shell (after naïvely joining
multiple arguments with spaces), so it needs an extra level of shell
quoting. This should have no effect because we already validated user
with a regex, but it’s better for escaping to be locally correct in
case the context changes.

We modify access_stream_for_delete_or_update function to return
Subscription object also along with stream. This change will be
helpful in avoiding an extra query to get subscription object in
code for updating subscription role.
We add a new wildcard_mention_policy setting to handle wildcard
mentions in large streams, with a wide range of policies available to
organizations.
We set the default to the safe option for preventing accidental spam:
only stream administrators being able to use wildcard mentions in
large streams.
We previously used to to redirect to config error page with
a different URL. This commit renders config error in the same
URL where configuration error is encountered. This way when
conifguration error is fixed the user can refresh to continue
normally or go back to login page from the link provided to
choose any other backend auth.
Also moved those URLs to dev_urls.py so that they can be easily
accessed to work on styling etc.
In tests, removed some of the asserts checking status code to be 200
as the function `assert_in_success_response` does that check.
We raise MissingAuthenticationError now, which adds
`www_authenticate=session` header to the error response. This
stops modern web-browsers from displaying a login form everytime
a 401 response it sent to the client.
Fixes#16284.
Most of the work for this was done when we implemented correct
behavior for guest users, since they treat public streams like private
streams anyway.
The general method involves moving the messages to the new stream with
special care of UserMessage.
We delete UserMessages for subs who are losing access to the message.
For private streams with protected history, we also create UserMessage
elements for users who are not present in the old stream, since that's
important for those users to access the moved messages.
Django treats path("<name>") like re_path(r"(?P<name>[^/]+)") and
path("<path:name>") like re_path(r"(?P<name>.+)").
This is more readable and consistent than the mix of slightly
different regexes we had before, and fixes various bugs:
• The r'apps/(.*)$' regex was missing a start anchor ^, so it
incorrectly matched all URLs that included apps/ as a substring
anywhere.
• The r'accounts/login/(google)/$' regex was missing a start anchor ^,
so it incorrectly matched all URLs that ended with
accounts/login/google/.
• The type annotation of zerver.views.realm_export.delete_realm_export
takes export_id as an int, but it was previously passed as a string.
• The type annotation of zerver.views.users.avatar takes medium as a
bool, but it was previously passed as a string.
• The [0-9A-Za-z]+ pattern for uidb64 was missing the - and _
characters that can validly be part of a base64url encoded
string (although I think the id is actually a decimal integer here,
in which case only 012345ADEIMNOQTUYcgjkwxyz are present in its
base64url encoding).

There are three functional side effects:
• Correct an insignificant but mathematically offensive bias toward
repeated characters in generate_api_key introduced in commit
47b4283c4b4c70ecde4d3c8de871c90ee2506d87; its entropy is increased
from 190.52864 bits to 190.53428 bits.
• Use the base32 alphabet in confirmation.models.generate_key; its
entropy is reduced from 124.07820 bits to the documented 120 bits, but
now it uses 1 syscall instead of 24.
• Use the base32 alphabet in get_bigbluebutton_url; its entropy is
reduced from 51.69925 bits to 50 bits, but now it uses 1 syscall
instead of 10.
(The base32 alphabet is A-Z 2-7. We could probably replace all of
these with plain secrets.token_urlsafe, since I expect most callers
can handle the full urlsafe_b64 alphabet A-Z a-z 0-9 - _ without
problems.)

For web-public streams, clients can access full topic history
without being authenticated. They only need to additionally
send "streams:web-public" narrow with their request like all
the other web-public queries.
When user requests for a realm that doesn't exists, we raise
a InvalidSubdomainError.
This reduces our effort at repeatedly ensuring realm is valid
in request in web-public queries.
'user_groups' endpoints are currently under 'pending_endpoints' in
test_openapi.py (even after being documented except one), due to the
'user_group_id' and 'group_id' parameter name mismatch in the
url config and the view functions.
This commit includes 'path_only=True' for 'user_group_id' parameter in
views to avoid the failure of 'test_openapi_arguments', in
test_openapi.py, which excludes the path parameters. This is a prep
commit for renaming 'group_id' to 'user_group_id' in the documentation
and removing the 'user_groups' endpoints from 'pending_endpoints'.
The new Stream administrator role is allowed to manage a stream they
administer, including:
* Setting properties like name, description, privacy and post-policy.
* Removing subscribers
* Deactivating the stream
The access_stream_for_delete_or_update is modified and is used only
to get objects from database and further checks for administrative
rights is done by check_stream_access_for_delete_or_update.
We have also added a new exception class StreamAdministratorRequired.
Via API, users can now access messages which are in web-public
streams without any authentication.
If the user is not authenticated, we assume it is a web-public
query and add `streams:web-public` narrow if not already present
to the narrow. web-public streams are also directly accessible.
Any malformed narrow which is not allowed in a web-public query
results in a 400 or 401. See test_message_fetch for the allowed
queries.
These weren’t wrong since orjson.JSONDecodeError subclasses
json.JSONDecodeError which subclasses ValueError, but the more
specific ones express the intention more clearly.
(ujson raised ValueError directly, as did json in Python 2.)

This redirect was never effective -- because of the
HostDomainMiddleware, all requests to invalid domains have their
actual results thrown away, and replaced by an "Invalid realm" 404.
These lines are nonetheless _covered_ by coverage, because they do
run; the redirect is simply ineffective. This can be seen by the test
that was added with them, in c8edbae21c, actually testing the contents
for the invalid realm wording, not the "find your accounts" wording.
The exception trace only goes from where the exception was thrown up
to where the `logging.exception` call is; any context as to where
_that_ was called from is lost, unless `stack_info` is passed as well.
Having the stack is particularly useful for Sentry exceptions, which
gain the full stack trace.
Add `stack_info=True` on all `logging.exception` calls with a
non-trivial stack; we omit `wsgi.py`. Adjusts tests to match.
This commit modifies the /streams endpoint so that the web-public
streams are included in the default list of streams that users
have access to.
This is part of PR #14638 that aims to allow guest users to
browse and subscribe themselves to web public streams.
Three reasons:
1. The sliding was disorienting.
2. The collapsing disallowed searching for other pages with Ctrl+F.
3. The collapsing mechanism wasn't accessible (not usable with the
keyboard / no ARIA tags).
Tweaked by tabbott to center the left sidebar on the selected page.
Part of #15948.
A few major themes here:
- We remove short_name from UserProfile
and add the appropriate migration.
- We remove short_name from various
cache-related lists of fields.
- We allow import tools to continue to
write short_name to their export files,
and then we simply ignore the field
at import time.
- We change functions like do_create_user,
create_user_profile, etc.
- We keep short_name in the /json/bots
API. (It actually gets turned into
an email.)
- We don't modify our LDAP code much
here.
When you post to /json/users, we no longer
require or look at the short_name parameter,
since we don't use it in any meaningful way.
An upcoming commit will eliminate it from the
database.
Log RealmAuditLog in do_set_realm_property and do_remove_realm_domain.
Tests for the changes are written in test_events because it will save
duplicate code for test_change_realm_property.
There is still some miscellaneous cleanup that
has to happen for things like analytics queries
and dead code in node tests, but this should
remove the main use of pointers in the backend.
(We will also still need to drop the DB field.)
This commit is first of few commita which aim to change all the
bugdown references to markdown. This commits rename the files,
file path mentions and change the imports.
Variables and other references to bugdown will be renamed in susequent
commits.
Due to authentication restrictions, a deployment may need to direct
traffic for mobile applications to an alternate uri to take advantage
alternate authentication mechansism. By default the standard realm URI
will be usedm but if overridden in the settings file, an alternate uri
can be substituted.
Now we are consistent about validating color/description.
Ideally we wouldn't need to validate the
`streams_raw` parameters multiple times per
request, but the outer function here changes
the error messages to explicitly reference
the "delete" and "add" request variables.
And for the situation where the user-supplied
parameters are correct, the performance penalty
for checking them twice is extremely negligible.
So it's probably fine for now to just make sure
we use the same validators in all the relevant
places.
There's probably some deeper refactor that we
can do to eliminate the whole `compose_views`
scheme. And it's also not entirely clear to
me that we really need to support the update
endpoint. But that's all out of the scope of
this commit.
Update the REQ check for profile_data in
update_user_backend by tweaking `check_profile_data`
to use `check_dict_only`.
Here is the relevant URL:
path('users/<int:user_id>', rest_dispatch,
{'GET': 'zerver.views.users.get_members_backend',
It would be nice to unify the validator
for these two views, but they are different:
update_user_backend
update_user_custom_profile_data
It's not completely clear to me why update_user_backend
seems to support a superset of the functionality
of `update_user_custom_profile_data`, but it has
this code to allow you to remove custom profile fields:
clean_profile_data = []
for entry in profile_data:
assert isinstance(entry["id"], int)
if entry["value"] is None or not entry["value"]:
field_id = entry["id"]
check_remove_custom_profile_field_value(target, field_id)
else:
clean_profile_data.append({
"id": entry["id"],
"value": entry["value"],
})
Whereas the other view is much simpler:
def update_user_custom_profile_data(
<snip>
) -> HttpResponse:
validate_user_custom_profile_data(user_profile.realm.id, data)
do_update_user_custom_profile_data_if_changed(user_profile, data)
# We need to call this explicitly otherwise constraints are not check
return json_success()
This tightens our checking of user-supplied data
for this endpoint:
path('users/me/profile_data', rest_dispatch,
{'PATCH': 'zerver.views.custom_profile_fields.update_user_custom_profile_data',
...
We now explicitly require the `value` field
to be present in the dicts being passed in
here, as part of `REQ`. There is no reason
that our current clients would be sending
extra fields here, and we would just ignore
them anyway, so we also move to using
check_dict_only.
Here is some relevant webapp code (see settings_account.js):
fields.push({id: field.id, value: user_ids});
update_user_custom_profile_fields(fields, channel.patch);
settings_ui.do_settings_change(method, "/json/users/me/profile_data",
{data: JSON.stringify([field])}, spinner_element);
The webapp code sends fields one at a time
as one-element arrays, which is strange, but
that is out of the scope of this change.
`/api/v1/fetch_api_key`'s response had a key `email` with the user's
delivery email. But its JSON counterpart `/json/fetch_api_key`, which
has a completely different implementation, did not return `email` in
its success response.
So to avoid confusion, the non-API endpoint, `/json/fetch_api_key`
response has been made identical with it's `/api` counterpart by
adding the `email` key. Also it is safe to send as the calling user
will only see their own email.
Currently, we use -1 as the Realm.message_retention_days value to retain
message forever unless specified at stream level for a particular stream,
that is, no policy set at the realm level. But this is incoherent with what
we use for Stream.message_retention_days where -1 means
> disable retention policy for this stream unconditionally
that can be confusing from an API standpoint.
So instead of trying some hack to reset the value to NULL or using some
other value like -2 for RETAIN_MESSAGE_FOREVER and use that for API. It is
much more intuitive to use a string like 'forever' that can be mapped to
RETAIN_MESSAGE_FOREVER at the backend. And this is similar to what we use
for streams settings as well.
In 5200598a31, we introduced a new
client capability that can be used to avoid unreasonable network
bandwidth consumed sending avatar URLs of long term idle users in
organizations with 10,000s members.
This commit enables this feature and adds support for it to the web
client.
With this implementation of the feature of the automatic theme
detection, we make the following changes in the backend, frontend and
documentation.
This replaces the previous night_mode boolean with an enum, with the
default value being to use the prefers-color-scheme feature of the
operating system to determine which theme to use.

We can now invite new users as realm owners. We restrict only
owners to invite new users as owners both for single invite

owner invitations.
Old: a validator returns None on success and returns an error string
on error.
New: a validator returns the validated value on success and raises
ValidationError on error.
This allows mypy to catch mismatches between the annotated type of a
REQ parameter and the type that the validator actually validates.

Rename the validator to check_union, to conform
more to Python typing nomenclature.
And we rename one of the test helpers to the
simpler `check_types`. (The test helper
was using "variable" in the "var" sense.)
The non-search code path here was simulating the response and escaping
logic from get_search_fields by duplicating what it would do with an
empty set of highlight locations.
We can produce much more readable code by just passing an empty list
of locations in this case.
This adds a new client_capability that clients such as the mobile apps
can use to avoid unreasonable network bandwidth consumed sending
avatar URLs in organizations with 10,000s of users.
Clients don't strictly need this data, as they can always use the
/avatar/{user_id} endpoint to fetch the avatar if desired.
This will be more efficient especially for realms with
10,000+ users because the avatar URLs would increase the
payload size significantly and cost us more bandwidth.
Fixes#15287.
This commit adds backend support for setting message_retention_days
while creating streams and updating it for an existing stream. We only
allow organization owners to set/update it for a stream.
'message_retention_days' field for a stream existed previously also, but
there was no way to set it while creating streams or update it for an
exisiting streams using any endpoint.
The most import change here is the one in maybe_send_to_registration
codepath, as the insufficient validation there could lead to fetching
an expired PreregistrationUser that was invited as an administrator
admin even years ago, leading to this registration ending up in the
new user being a realm administrator.
Combined with the buggy migration in
0198_preregistrationuser_invited_as.py, this led to users incorrectly
joining as organizations administrators by accident. But even without
that bug, this issue could have allowed a user who was invited as an
administrator but then had that invitation expire and then joined via
social authentication incorrectly join as an organization administrator.
The second change is in ConfirmationEmailWorker, where this wasn't a
security problem, but if the server was stopped for long enough, with
some invites to send out email for in the queue, then after starting it
up again, the queue worker would send out emails for invites that
had already expired.

Giving the /subdomain/<token>/ url there could feel buggy if the user

Fixes#15285
This event will be used more now for guest users when moving
topic between streams (See #15277). So, instead of deleting
messages in the topic as part of different events which is
very slow and a bad UX, we now handle the messages to delete in
bulk which is a much better UX.
This is designed to have no user-facing change unless the client
declares bulk_message_deletion in its client_capabilities.
Clients that do so will receive a single bulk event for bulk deletions
of messages within a single conversation (topic or PM thread).

We now only allow only organization owners to set message retention

There seems to have been a confusion between two different uses of the
word “optional”:
• An optional parameter may be omitted and replaced with a default
value.
• An Optional type has None as a possible value.
Sometimes an optional parameter has a default value of None, or None
is otherwise a meaningful value to provide, in which case it makes
sense for the optional parameter to have an Optional type. But in
other cases, optional parameters should not have Optional type. Fix
them.

This commit adds three `.pysa` model files: `false_positives.pysa`
for ruling out false positive flows with `Sanitize` annotations,
`req_lib.pysa` for educating pysa about Zulip's `REQ()` pattern for
extracting user input, and `redirects.pysa` for capturing the risk
of open redirects within Zulip code. Additionally, this commit
introduces `mark_sanitized`, an identity function which can be used
to selectively clear taint in cases where `Sanitize` models will not
work. This commit also puts `mark_sanitized` to work removing known
false postive flows.
This commit adds 'add_query_to_redirect_url' to one additional
function which had not yet been written when
'add_query_to_redirect_url' was introduced. This helper centralizes
URL manipulation for redirects, making it easier to add Pysa
sanitization in subsequent commits.
This new endpoint returns a 'user' dictionary which, as of now,
contains a single key 'is_subscribed' with a boolean value that
represents whether the user with the given 'user_id' is subscribed
to the stream with the given 'stream_id'.
Fixes#14966.
The only clients that should use the typing
indicators endpoint are our internal clients,
and they should send a JSON-formatted list
of user_ids.
We now enforce this, which removes some
complexity surrounding legacy ways of sending
users, such as emails and comma-delimited
strings of user_ids.
There may be a very tiny number of mobile
clients that still use the old emails API.
This won't have any user-facing effect on
the mobile users themselves, but if you type
a message to your friend on an old mobile
app, the friend will no longer see typing
indicators.
Also, the mobile team may see some errors
in their Sentry logs from the server rejecting
posts from the old mobile clients.
The error messages we report here are a bit
more generic, since we now just use REQ
to do validation with this code:
validator=check_list(check_int)
This also allows us to remove a test hack
related to the API documentation. (We changed
the docs to reflect the modern API in an
earlier commit, but the tests couldn't be
fixed while we still had the more complex
semantics for the "to" parameter.)
This commit adds some basic checks while adding or removing
realm owner status of a user and adds code to change owner
status of a user using update_user_backend.
This also adds restriction on removing owner status of the
last owner of realm. This restriction was previously on
revoking admin status, but as we have added a more privileged
role of realm owner, we now have this restriction on owner
instead of admin.
We need to apply that restriction both in the role change code path
and the deactivate code path.

This was implemented in 2012 to avoid showing a loading indicator for

Zulip onboarding UI always creates some message history, and fetching

This commit removes short_name and client_id fields from the user
objects returned by get_profile_backend because neither of them
had a purpose.
* short_name hasn't been present anywhere else in the Zulip API for
several years, and isn't set through any coherent algorithm.
* client_id was a forgotten 2013-era predecessor to the queue_id field
returned by the register_event_queue process.
The combination of these changes gets us close to having `get_profile`
have the exact same format as other endpoints fetching a user object.
This commit changes get_profile_backend to be based on format_user_row
such that it's a superset of the fields for our other endpoints for
getting data on a user.
To be clear, this does not removes any of the exisiting fields, that
were returned by this endpoint.
This change adds some fields to the User object returned by the
endpoint. API docs are updated accordingly for the added fields.

We change do_create_user and create_user to accept
role as a parameter instead of 'is_realm_admin' and 'is_guest'.
These changes are done to minimize data conversions between

This commit modifies the backend to accept user ids when subscribing
users to streams.
It also migrates all existing tests to use this API, aside from a
small set of tests for the legacy API.

The query to fetch the latest user activity was missing an
`.order_by('last_visit')`. This meant that the results were being
ordered by the `id`, which resulted in us getting `update_message_flags`
action performed on the client that the user installed last, instead of
being client agnostic and fetching the "global" last
`update_message_flags` action performed by the user.
These changes should be included in bd9b74436c,
as it makes sure that Zulip limited plan realm won't be able to change the
`message_retention_days` setting.
The pointer doesn't get updated when a user is only reading messages in
narrowed views. But, we use the pointer position to determine the
furthest read time, which causes the bankruptcy banner to show up even
for users who have been actively reading and sending messages.
This commit switches to using the time of the last update_message_flags
activity by a user to determine the time of last activity.
Since production testing of `message_retention_days` is finished, we can
enable this feature in the organization settings page. We already had this
setting in frontend but it was bit rotten and not rendered in templates.
Here we replaced our past text-input based setting with a
dropdown-with-text-input setting approach which is more consistent with our
existing UI.
Along with frontend changes, we also incorporated a backend change to
handle making retention period forever. This change introduces a new
convertor `to_positive_or_allowed_int` which only allows positive integers
and an allowed value for settings like `message_retention_days` which can
be a positive integer or has the value `Realm.RETAIN_MESSAGE_FOREVER` when
we change the setting to retain message forever.
This change made `to_not_negative_int_or_none` redundant so removed it as
well.

Prior to this change, there were reports of 500s in
production due to `export.extra_data` being a
Nonetype. This was reproducible using the s3
backend in development when a row was created in
the `RealmAuditLog` table, but the export failed in
the `DeferredWorker`. This left an entry lying
about that was never updated with an `extra_data`
field.
To fix this, we catch any exceptions in the
`DeferredWorker`, and then update `extra_data` to
encode the failure. We also fix the fact that we
never updated the export UI table with pending exports.
These changes also negated the use for the somewhat
hacky `clear_success_banner` logic.
We add URLs to the `links_for_embed set`, only when
the `url_embed_preview_enabled` flag is turned on.
So, it is sufficient to check if `links_for_embed`
is not empty.
This new type eliminates a bunch of messy code that previously
involved passing around long lists of mixed positional keyword and
arguments, instead using a consistent data object for communicating
about the state of an external authentication (constructed in
backends.py).
The result is a significantly more readable interface between
zproject/backends.py and zerver/views/auth.py, though likely more
could be done.
This has the side effect of renaming fields for internally passed
structures from name->full_name, next->redirect_to; this results in
most of the test codebase changes.

This change unfortunately requires an index that we don't have, and
thus is incredibly expensive. We'll need to do a thoughtful reworking
before we can integrate it again.
When a user is reading messages only in stream or topic narrows, the pointer
can be left far behind. Using this to compute the furthest_read_time causes
the banckruptcy banner to be shown even when a user has been actively
reading messages. This commit switches to using the sent time on the last
message that the user has read to compute the furthest read time.
This hack was important when only the mobile apps (and not the webapp)
were using the unread_msgs data structure and the first_unread
infrastructure. Now that the webapp is using those things, there
aren't leaked ancient unread messages that aren't accessible on the
webapp, so any few users still in this situation can get out of it by
just reading the problematic messages.
Internet Explorer does not support `position: sticky` which improves
floating recipient bar behavior during scrolling which is one of the
issues blocking PR #9910.
IE also does not support some features that modern browsers support
hence may not super well.
This commit adds an error page that'll be displayed when a user logs
in from Internet Explorer. Also, a test is added.
The purpose is to provide a way for (non-webapp) clients,
like the mobile and terminal apps, to tell whether the
server it's talking to is new enough to support a given
API feature -- in particular a way that
* is finer-grained than release numbers, so that for
features developed after e.g. 2.1.0 we can use them
immediately on servers deployed from master (like
chat.zulip.org and zulipchat.com) without waiting the
months until a 2.2 release;
* is reliable, unlike e.g. looking at the number of
commits since a release;
* doesn't lead to a growing bag of named feature flags
which the server has to go on sending forever.
Tweaked by tabbott to extend the documentation.

This adds a new realm setting: default_code_block_language.
This PR also adds a new widget to specify a language, which
behaves somewhat differently from other widgets of the same
kind; instead of exposing methods to the whole module, we
just create a single IIFE that handles all the interactions
with the DOM for the widget.
We also move the code for remapping languages to format_code

This used to show a blank page. Considering that the links remain valid
only for 15 seconds it's important to show something more informative to
the user.
This breaks provisioning because running this as import time would
require language_name_map.json to be generated by `manage.py

We could potentially fix this in the future by changing the generate
language files to be things we commit to the project.
This is a prep commit for making use of same choices for
create_stream_policy and invite_to_stream_policy as both fields
have same set of choices.
This will be useful as we add other fields using these same types.
This commit replaces the WAITING _PERIOD with FULL_MEMBERS from
create_stream_policy and invite_to_stream_policy choices to

This makes it relatively easy for a system administrator to
temporarily override these values after a desktop app security
release that they want to ensure all of their users take.
We're not putting this in settings, since we don't want to encourage
accidental long-term overrides of these important-to-security values.
This is a full-stack change:
- server
- JS code
- templates
It's all pretty simple--just use stream_id instead
of stream_name.
I am 99% sure we don't document this API nor use it
in mobile, so it should be a safe change.
This commit introduces two new functions in 'url_encoding.py' which
centralize two common patterns for constructing redirect URLs. It
also migrates the files using those patterns to use the new
functions.
This allows us to block use of the desktop app with insecure versions
(we simply fail to load the Zulip webapp at all, instead rendering an
error page).
For now we block only versions that are known to be both insecure and
not auto-updating, but we can easily adjust these parameters in the
future.
This improves the error handling for invalid values of the
propagate_mode parameter to our message editing endpoints.
Previously, invalid values would just work like change_one rather than
doing nothing.
URLs for config errors were configured seperately for each error
which is better handled by having error name as argument in URL.
A new view `config_error_view` is added containing context for
each error that returns `config_error` page with the relevant
context.
Also fixed tests and some views in `auth.py` to be consistent with
changes.
Saying `foo.lstrip('# ')` does more than just remove
a '# ' prefix. It removes any combination of '#' and
spaces.
We now make the intention slightly more clear.
We would strip these as you'd expect:
# foo
## foo
### foo
but for this we now only strip the first "#":
# # # # # foo
Thanks to @minusworld for catching this--see #14264, which
points out that lstrip() doesn't do what your intuition
might tell you it does.
Now we properly remove the "HTTP_" prefix.
It's not clear to me why we need these prefixes for Django
purposes in the fixtures, but I didn't want to go down
the rabbit hole of fixing those.
To test:
got to http://YOUR-DEV_SERVER/devtools/integrations/
select "bitbucket3" for the integration.
select "diagnostics_ping.json" for the fixture.

Fixes#14264
We had a bunch of ugly hacks to monkey patch things due to upstream
being temporarily unmaintained and not merging PRs. Now the project is
active again and the fixes have been merged and included in the latest
version - so we clean up all that code.
This ensures that even if it were possible to create an MIT Kerberos
account with a malicious username and/or hack webathena to pretend
that's the case, one couldn't do anything malicious.
This security improvement only impacts a single installation of Zulip
where Zephyr mirroring is in use that has already had the fix applied,
so there's no reason to do a security notice for it.
Found by Graham Bleaney using pysa.
This refactors get_members_backend to return user data of a single
user in the form of a dictionary (earlier being a list with a single
dictionary).
This also refactors it to return the data with an appropriate key
(inside a dictionary), "user" or "members", according to the type of
data being returned.
Tweaked by tabbott to use somewhat less opaque code and simple OpenAPI
descriptions.
The "sender" property in `send_message_backend` is meant to only do
something when doing Zephyr mirroring (or similar). We should help
clients behave correctly by banning this property in requests that are
not specifically requesting mirroring behavior.
This commit requires changes to a number of tests that incorrectly
passed this parameter or didn't use the right setup for mirroring.
This extends our email address visibility settings to deny access to
user email addresses even to organization administrators.
At the moment, they can of course change the setting (which leaves an
audit trail), but in the future only organization owners will be able
to change that setting.
While we're at this, we rewrite the settings_data.js test to cover all
the cases in a more consistent way.
Fixes#14111.
We were using `code` to pass around messages.
The `code` field is designed to be a code, not
a human-readable message.
It's possible that we don't actually need two
flavors of messages for these type of validations,
but I didn't want to change that yet.
We **definitely** don't need to put two types of
message in the exception, so I fix that. Instead,
I just have the caller ask what level of detail
it needs.
I added a non-verbose message for the case of
system bots.
I removed the non-translated version of the message
for deactivated accounts, which didn't have test
coverage and is slightly more prone to leaking
email info that we don't want to leak.
We are trying to elminate the version of
`validate_email` that lives in `actions.py`.
Inlining it barely increases the code size, and
it removes some noise related the three-item
tuple that `check_incoming_email` returns.
Now called:
validate_email_not_already_in_realm
We have a separate validation function that
makes sure that the email fits into a realm's
domain scheme, and we want to avoid naming
confusion here.
Users who are using ZulipDesktop or haven't managed to auto-update to
ZulipElectron should be strongly encouraged to upgrade.
We'll likely want to move to something even stricter that blocks
loading the app at all, but this is a good start.
This gives them cache-compatible URLs, and also avoids some extra
copies of the sprite sheet images.

So far the conversion was in a very random place -
register_remote_user(). All other codepaths that use
login_or_register_remote_user() call it with the user's email address.
Making remote_user_sso convert remote_username to the email address
before calling login_or_register_remote_user makes this usage consistent
across the board.
finish_desktop_flow is called with the assumption that the request
successfully proved control over the user_profile and generates a
special link to log into the user_profile account. There's no reason to
pass the realm param, as user_profile.realm can be assumed.
In `auth.py` there are three `if` blocks for different backends
to redirect to config error page with similar code. It is better
handled with common code using `get_attr()` function on
constructed setting names.
Create a new page for desktop auth flow, in which
users can select one from going to the app or
continue the flow in the browser.

Django 2.2.x is the next LTS release after Django 1.11.x; I expect
we'll be on it for a while, as Django 3.x won't have an LTS release
series out for a while.
Because of upstream API changes in Django, this commit includes
several changes beyond requirements and:
* urls: django.urls.resolvers.RegexURLPattern has been replaced by
django.urls.resolvers.URLPattern; affects OpenAPI code and related
features which re-parse Django's internals.
https://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/28593
* test_runner: Change number to suffix. Django changed the name in this
ticket: https://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/28578
* Delete now-unnecessary SameSite cookie code (it's now the default).
* forms: urlsafe_base64_encode returns string in Django 2.2.
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.2/ref/utils/#django.utils.http.urlsafe_base64_encode
* upload: Django's File.size property replaces _get_size().
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.2/_modules/django/core/files/base/
* process_queue: Migrate to new autoreload API.
* test_messages: Add an extra query caused by .refresh_from_db() losing
the .select_related() on the Realm object.
* session: Sync SessionHostDomainMiddleware with Django 2.2.
There's a lot more we can do to take advantage of the new release;
this is tracked in #11341.
Many changes by Tim Abbott, Umair Waheed, and Mateusz Mandera squashed
are squashed into this commit.
Fixes#10835.
This makes it possible to create a Zulip account from the mobile or
desktop apps and have the end result be that the user is logged in on
their mobile device.
We may need small changes in the desktop and/or mobile apps to support
this.
Closes#10859.
We now validate streams with a separate
function from PM recipients.
It's confusing enough all the ways you can
encode a stream or encode the PM recipients,
but trying to do it all in one function was
hard to reason about and led to at least one
bug.
In particular, there was a bug where streams
with commas in them would get split. Now
we just don't ever split on commas inside
of `extract_stream_indicator`.
Fixes#13836
This adds a new API endpoint for querying basic data on a single other
user in the organization, reusing the existing infrastructure (and
view function!) for getting data on all users in an organization.
Fixes#12277.
The word "status" is vague, and this isn't
actually returning a list, so we now name it
get_presence_response.
I originally was gonna rename this to
get_presence_dict, but there's a function
called get_status_dict that returns a subset
of the response, so I think it's a bit more
clear that this is the bigger dict that
actually gets sent back.
We want to err on the side of server_timestamp being
old, since we may eventually use this to make responses
just include incremental changes, and we don't want a
time window (however small) when we miss presence rows.
The clients will be able to deal with duplicate data
to the extent that the time windows are overlapping.
Also, extracting the other local var here
(for `presences`) will set up a subsequent commit
where we re-format the data for clients with
slim_presence=True.
This commit includes a new `stream_post_policy` setting,
by replacing the `is_announcement_only` field from the Stream model,
which is done by mirroring the structure of the existing
`create_stream_policy`.
It includes the necessary schema and database migrations to migrate
the is_announcement_only boolean field to stream_post_policy,
a smallPositiveInteger field similar to many other settings.
This change is done to allow organization administrators to restrict
new members from creating and posting to a stream. However, this does
not affect admins who are new members.
With many tweaks by tabbott to documentation under /help, etc.
Fixes#13616.
This flag affects page_params and the
payload you get back from POSTs to this
url:
users/me/presence
The flag does not yet affect the
presence events that get sent to a
client.
validate_otp_params needs to be moved to backends.py, because as of this
commit it'll be used both there and in views.auth - and import from
views.auth to backends.py causes circular import issue.
This makes get_raw_user_data, which was being imported indirectly
from zerver.lib.events inside zerver/views/users.py, get imported
from zerver.lib.users where it actually is.
The `notification_settings_null` field of the `client_capabilities`
parameter is, apparently unintentionally, required.
This is mostly harmless. However, if any _future_ fields are made
required, all existing clients using this parameter will break, and it
will be needlessly difficult for new clients to specify new
capabilities in a backwards-compatible way.
Attempt to stave that possibility off with warnings.
(No functional changes.)
Now that we have the type situation of having anchor support passing a
string, this is a much more natural way to implement
use_first_unread_anchor.
We still support the old interface to avoid breaking compatibility
with legacy versions of the mobile apps.
A wart that has long been present inin Zulip's get_messages API is how
to request "the latest messages" in the API. Previously, the
recommendation was basically to pass anchor=10000000000000000 (for an
appropriately huge number). An accident of the server's implementation
meant that specific number of 0s was actually important to avoid a
buggy (or at least wasteful) value of found_newest=False if the query
had specified num_after=0 (since we didn't check).
This was the cause of the mobile issue
https://github.com/zulip/zulip-mobile/issues/3654.
The solution is to allow passing a special value of anchor='newest',
basically a special string-type value that the server can interpret as
meaning the user precisely just wants the most recent messages. We
also add an analogous anchor='oldest' or similar to avoid folks
needing to write a somewhat ugly anchor=0 for fetching the very first
messages.
We may want to also replace the use_first_unread_anchor argument to be
a "first_unread" value for the anchor parameter.
While it's not always ideal to make a value have a variable type like
this, in this case it seems like a really clean way to express the
idea of what the user is asking for in the API.
This fixes a bug where that clients using the legacy approach of a
"very large anchor" value with the intent to only get the most recent
messages would only get found_newest=True if they used the specific
value LARGER_THAN_MAX_MESSAGE_ID. Now any value at least that large
will work.
In upcoming commits, we plan to replace this with passing the string
"last", but it seems worth removing the buggy "special value" behavior
while we're touching this code.
In Django 2.0, request.user.is_authenticated stops supporting
`.is_authenticated()` and becomes just a property. In 1.11, it's a
CallableProperty (i.e. can be used either way), and we already use it
as a property in several other places, so we should just switch to
using it consistently now to get it off of our Django 2.x migration
checklist.
Adding invited users to the notifications stream unconditionally isn't
a correct behaviour for guest users, where the previous behavior of
including the notifications stream no longer makes sense. Therefore,
while inviting a new user, the notifications stream is listed along
with other streams with a message "recieves notifications for new
streams" in order to distinguish it from other streams.
Fixes#13645.
The desktop otp flow (to be added in next commits) will want to generate
one-time tokens for the app that will allow it to obtain an
authenticated session. log_into_subdomain will be the endpoint to pass
the one-time token to. Currently it uses signed data as its input
"tokens", which is not compatible with the otp flow, which requires
simpler (and fixed-length) token. Thus the correct scheme to use is to
store the authenticated data in redis and return a token tied to the
data, which should be passed to the log_into_subdomain endpoint.
In this commit, we replace the "pass signed data around" scheme with the
redis scheme, because there's no point having both.
This extracts a function for computing show_invites and
show_add_streams, for better readability and testability.
This commit was substantially cleaned up by tabbott.
This legacy cross-realm bot hasn't been used in several years, as far
as I know. If we wanted to re-introduce it, I'd want to implement it
as an embedded bot using those common APIs, rather than the totally
custom hacky code used for it that involves unnecessary queue workers
and similar details.
Fixes#13533.
authenticate_remote_user already takes care of calling the authenticate
with the dummy backend. Also, return_data is not used and catching
DoesNotExist exception is not needed, as the dummy backend just returns
None if user isn't found.
In other places where we set request._email, we set it to the
delivery_email, as that's more informative in orgs with hidden email
settings, where user.email will be useless.
Zulip has had a small use of WebSockets (specifically, for the code
path of sending messages, via the webapp only) since ~2013. We
originally added this use of WebSockets in the hope that the latency
benefits of doing so would allow us to avoid implementing a markdown
local echo; they were not. Further, HTTP/2 may have eliminated the
latency difference we hoped to exploit by using WebSockets in any
case.
While we’d originally imagined using WebSockets for other endpoints,
there was never a good justification for moving more components to the
WebSockets system.
This WebSockets code path had a lot of downsides/complexity,
including:
* The messy hack involving constructing an emulated request object to
hook into doing Django requests.
* The `message_senders` queue processor system, which increases RAM
needs and must be provisioned independently from the rest of the
server).
* A duplicate check_send_receive_time Nagios test specific to
WebSockets.
* The requirement for users to have their firewalls/NATs allow
WebSocket connections, and a setting to disable them for networks
where WebSockets don’t work.
* Dependencies on the SockJS family of libraries, which has at times
been poorly maintained, and periodically throws random JavaScript
exceptions in our production environments without a deep enough
traceback to effectively investigate.
* A total of about 1600 lines of our code related to the feature.
* Increased load on the Tornado system, especially around a Zulip
server restart, and especially for large installations like
zulipchat.com, resulting in extra delay before messages can be sent
again.
As detailed in
https://github.com/zulip/zulip/pull/12862#issuecomment-536152397, it
appears that removing WebSockets moderately increases the time it
takes for the `send_message` API query to return from the server, but
does not significantly change the time between when a message is sent
and when it is received by clients. We don’t understand the reason
for that change (suggesting the possibility of a measurement error),
and even if it is a real change, we consider that potential small
latency regression to be acceptable.
If we later want WebSockets, we’ll likely want to just use Django
Channels.

Previously, if you tried to invite a user whose account had been
deactivated, we didn't provide a clear path forward for reactivating
the users, which was confusing.
We fix this by plumbing through to the frontend the information that
there is an existing user account with that email address in this
organization, but that it's deactivated. For administrators, we
provide a link for how to reactivate the user.

in a crude way (i.e. users get an error when they try to send one).
It makes no effort to adjust the UI to avoid advertising the idea of
sending private messages.
Fixes#6617.
With the recipient field being denormalized into the UserProfile and
Streams models, all current uses of bulk_get_recipients can be done more
efficient, by simply checking the .recipient_id attribute on the
appropriate objects.
Adds required API and front-end changes to modify and read the
wildcard_mentions_notify field in the Subscription model.
It includes front-end code to add the setting to the user's "manage
streams" page. This setting will be greyed out when a stream is muted.
The PR also includes back-end code to add the setting the initial state of
a subscription.
New automated tests were added for the API, events system and front-end.
In manual testing, we checked that modifying the setting in the front end
persisted the change in the Subscription model. We noticed the notifications
were not behaving exactly as expected in manual testing; see
https://github.com/zulip/zulip/issues/13073#issuecomment-560263081 .
Tweaked by tabbott to fix real-time synchronization issues.
Fixes: #13429.
In configurations with LDAP_APPEND_DOMAIN, we don't want people creating
non-ldap accounts with emails matching the ldap domain.
So in the registration flow, if the email isn't found in LDAP, but
matches LDAP_APPEND_DOMAIN, we stop, rather than proceeding with account
creation. In case of emails not matching LDAP_APPEND_DOMAIN, we will
still continue to make a normal, non-ldap account.
The problem was that, for example, given a configuration of social
backend + LDAPPopulator, if a user that's not in ldap was being
registered, the Full Name field in the registration form would be
empty instead of getting prefilled with the name provided by the
social backend.
This fixes it - first we try to get the name from ldap. If that
succeeds, a form is created pre-filled with that name. Otherwise, we
proceed to attempt to pre-fill with other means.
This also has a nice side effect of reorganizing most of the logic to
be more parallel between LDAP and other sources of name data.
This is a performance optimization, since we can avoid doing work
related to wildcard mentions in the common case that the message can't
have any. We also add a unit test for adding wildcard mentions in a
message edit.
Previously, the LDAP code for syncing user data was not
multiple-realm-aware, resulting in errors trying to sync data for an
LDAP user present in multiple realms.
Tweaked by tabbott to add some extended comments.
Fixes#11520.
For a long time, we've been only doing the zxcvbn password strength
checks on the browser, which is helpful, but means users could through
hackery (or a bug in the frontend validation code) manage to set a
too-weak password. We fix this by running our password strength
validation on the backend as well, using python-zxcvbn.
In theory, a bug in python-zxcvbn could result in it producing a
different opinion than the frontend version; if so, it'd be a pretty
bad bug in the library, and hopefully we'd hear about it from users,
report upstream, and get it fixed that way. Alternatively, we can
switch to shelling out to node like we do for KaTeX.
Fixes#6880.
A bug in Zulip's new user signup process meant that users who
registered their account using social authentication (e.g. GitHub or
Google SSO) in an organization that also allows password
authentication could have their personal API key stolen by an
unprivileged attacker, allowing nearly full access to the user's
account.
Zulip versions between 1.7.0 and 2.0.6 were affected.
This commit fixes the original bug and also contains a database
migration to fix any users with corrupt `password` fields in the
database as a result of the bug.
Out of an abundance of caution (and to protect the users of any
installations that delay applying this commit), the migration also
resets the API keys of any users where Zulip's logs cannot prove the
user's API key was not previously stolen via this bug. Resetting
those API keys will be inconvenient for users:
* Users of the Zulip mobile and terminal apps whose API keys are reset
will be logged out and need to login again.
* Users using their personal API keys for any other reason will need
to re-fetch their personal API key.
We discovered this bug internally and don't believe it was disclosed
prior to our publishing it through this commit. Because the algorithm
for determining which users might have been affected is very
conservative, many users who were never at risk will have their API
keys reset by this migration.
To avoid this on self-hosted installations that have always used
e.g. LDAP authentication, we skip resetting API keys on installations
that don't have password authentication enabled. System
administrators on installations that used to have email authentication
enabled, but no longer do, should temporarily enable EmailAuthBackend
before applying this migration.
The migration also records which users had their passwords or API keys
reset in the usual RealmAuditLog table.
This change makes it possible for users to control the notification
settings for wildcard mentions as a separate control from PMs and
direct @-mentions.
We move the check that the user is a member or admin inot this
decorator.
This name better communicates that this may do other checks beyond
just verifying the policy.
We'll be soon documenting a production workflow that involves using
it, and that means it needs to live under scripts/ (since tools/ isn't
present in release tarballs).
This is essentially an assertion failure code path, so it doesn't
really matter, but it seems best to use the value that's the cause of
the problem here.
Then, find and fix a predictable number of previous misuses.
With a small change by tabbott to preserve backwards compatibility for
sending `yes` for the `forged` field.

The original/legacy emoji reactions endpoints made use of HTTP PUT and
didn't have an API that could correctly handle situations where the
emoji names change over time. We stopped using the legacy endpoints
some time ago, so we can remove them now.
This requires straightforward updates to older tests that were still
written against the legacy API.
Fixes#12940.
The function only used the user's realm anyway, so this is a cleaner
API.
This should also make it more convenient to permanently delete
messages manually, since one doesn't have to fetch a random user in
the realm in order to delete a message using the management shell.
No functional change.
When creating realm with the ldap backend, the registration flow didn't
properly handle some things - the user wouldn't be set as realm admin,
initial subscriptions and messages weren't created, and the redirect
wasn't happening properly in the case of subdomains.
As discussed in the comment, ideally these checks should be added
completely automatically, rather than needing to be manually added
every time we add a new setting. But hopefully the example code for
all of the similar enums that this provides will at least provide some
help.
By adding some additional plumbing (through PreregistrationUser) of the
full_name and an additional full_name_validated option, we
pre-populate the Full Name field in the registration form when coming
through a social backend (google/github/saml/etc.) and potentially skip
the registration form (if the user would have nothing to do there other
than clicking the Confirm button) and just create the account and log
the user in.
The main purpose of this is to make that name change happen in
/server_settings. external_authentication_methods is a much better, more
descriptive name than social_backends from API perspective.
This small block of code was over-indented. It should be run in this
part of the function unconditionally, not inside an "else" block.
We obviously want it to run regardless of whether
request.POST.get('from_confirmation')
is True or not.
This legacy endpoint was designed for the original native Zulip mobile
apps, which were deprecated years ago in favor of the React Native
app.
It was replaced by /server_settings for active use years ago, so it's
safe to remove it now.
The url scheme is now /accounts/login/social/saml/{idp_name} to initiate
login using the IdP configured under "idp_name" name.
display_name and display_logo (the name and icon to show on the "Log in
with" button) can be customized by adding the apprioprate settings in
the configured IdP dictionaries.
This changes the way django_to_ldap_username works to make sure the ldap
username it returns actually has a corresponding ldap entry and raise an
exception if that's not possible. It seems to be a more sound approach
than just having it return its best guess - which was the case so far.
Now there is a guarantee that what it returns is the username of an
actual ldap user.
This allows communicating to the registration flow when the email being
registered doesn't belong to ldap, which then will proceed to register
it via the normal email backend flow - finally fixing the bug where you
couldn't register a non-ldap email even with the email backend enabled.
These changes to the behavior of django_to_ldap_username require small
refactorings in a couple of other functions that call it, as well as
adapting some tests to these changes. Finally, additional tests are
added for the above-mentioned registration flow behavior and some
related corner-cases.
Previously, the logic for determining whether to provide an LDAP
password prompt on the registration page was incorrectly including it
if any LDAP authentication was backend enabled, even if LDAP was
configured with the populate-only backend that is not responsible for
authentication (just for filling in name and custom profile fields).
We fix this by correcting the conditional, and add a test.
There's still follow-up work to do here: We may still end up
presenting a registration form in situations where it's useless
because we got all the data from SAML + LDAP. But that's for a future
issue.
This fixes a bug reported in #13275.
There are a few outstanding issues that we expect to resolve beforce
including this in a release, but this is good checkpoint to merge.
This PR is a collaboration with Tim Abbott.

Fixes#1727.
With the server down, apply migrations 0245 and 0246. 0246 will remove
the pub_date column, so it's essential that the previous migrations
ran correctly to copy data before running this.
Apparently, our change in b8a1050fc4 to
stop caching responses on API endpoints accidentally ended up
affecting uploaded files as well.
Fix this by explicitly setting a Cache-Control header in our Sendfile
responses, as well as changing our outer API caching code to only set
the never cache headers if the view function didn't explicitly specify
them itself.
This is not directly related to #13088, as that is a similar issue
with the S3 backend.
Thanks to Gert Burger for the report.
The previous code for ensuring the sort order of emoji choices was
correct relied on an OrderedDict structure, which isn't guaranteed to
be preserved when passed to the frontend via JSON (in fact, it isn't,
since we converted the way page_params is passed to use
sort_keys=True). Switch it to a list of dictionaries to correct this.

It primarily affects servers using Zulip's local file uploads backend

This adds a FAKE_EMAIL_DOMAIN setting, which should be used if
EXTERNAL_HOST is not a valid domain, and something else is needed to
form bot and dummy user emails (if email visibility is turned off).
It defaults to EXTERNAL_HOST.
get_fake_email_domain() should be used to get this value. It validates
that it's correctly set - that it can be used to form valid emails.
If it's not set correctly, an exception is raised. This is the right
approach, because it's undesirable to have the server seemingly
peacefully operating with that setting misconfigured, as that could
mask some hidden sneaky bugs due to UserProfiles with invalid emails,
which would blow up the moment some code that does validate the emails
is called.
We added default ToS for the development environment a few months

Without disturbing the flow of the existing code for configuring
embedded bots too much, we now use the config_options feature to
allow incoming webhook type bot to be configured via. the "/bots"

config data using the same function for incoming webhook type
bots alongside embedded bots (as opposed to creating a new
function just for incoming webhook bots).
Previously, our OpenAPI documentation validation was failing for some
endpoints because it didn't account for the `in: path` type of
parameter, resulting in a mismatch between what was declared via REQ
and what was declared in the OpenAPI docs.
We fix this by excluding the path type parameters in both places from
what's considered by documentation using the `path_only` flag.
I doubt this is the correct long-term fix; in particular, I don't
think we're actually running the validators for these path-only
parameters. The examples that exist today are all IDs with validators
for being non-negative numbers, but longer-term I think we'll want to
do something different (possibly at the REQ layer, see the TODO).
This function was used only once in exclude_muting_conditions where
it returned stream name so the function to fetch stream id.
Since we exepect the narrow to also include stream id we refactor it to
return a stream object and since we use get_stream_by_narrow_operand_access_unchecked
we don't need to worry about handling cases where stream id is passed since
the function handles it.
This let's us clean up the linter that excludes the use of get_stream
and by adding the access_unchecked in the name we make it clear that
it should be used with caution.
Refactoring idea by Tim Abbott.
Makes it obvious and readable and as an added bonus take up less space.
Note, some types used Iterable instead of List that were change
to used List since the narrow_paramter converter return a List.
It seems possible that attempting to export large organizations could
result in high resource consumption that justifies having a technician
manage the exports manually.
The original seems to be unmaintained
(johnsensible/django-sendfile#65). Notably, this fixes a bug in the
filename parameter, which perviously showed the Python 3 repr of a
byte string (johnsensible/django-sendfile#49).

The `users/me/subscriptions` endpoint accidentally started returning
subscriber information for each stream. This is convenient, but
unnecessarily costly for those clients which either don't need it
(most API apps) or already acquire this information via /register
(including Zulip's apps).
This change removes that data set from the default response. Clients
which had come to rely on it, or would like to rely on it in future,
may still access it via an additional documented API parameter.
Fixes#12917.
It was allowing us to get away with wrong types on a few functions:
`check_send_typing_notification` and `send_notification_backend` can be
(and are) called with a list of `int` as `notification_to`, not just a
list of `str`.
The problem it was working around already had a better solution using
the dummy `type` argument. Use that.

The current code looks like it's trying to redirect /integrations/doc/email
to /integrations when EMAIL_GATEWAY_PATTERN is not set.
I think it doesn't currently do this. The test for that pathway has a bug:
self.get_doc('integrations/doc-html/email', subdomain='zulip') needs a
leading slash, and putting the slash back in results in the test failing.
This redirection is not really desired behavior -- better is to
unconditionally show that the email integration exists, and just point the
user to https://zulip.readthedocs.io/en/latest/production/email-gateway.html
(this is done in a child commit).
We know that via the `AbstractMessage` class that `sender`
is of the type `UserProfile`. We type this as `Optional`
to tell mypy that the operands to the right of the first
`or` can indeed be evaluated within the following `for` loop.
This feature is intended to cover all of our ways of exporting a
realm, not just the initial "public export" feature, so we should name
things appropriately for that goal.
Additionally, we don't want to include data exports in page_params;
the original implementation was actually buggy and would have.
When a person creates a new realm, they'll likely want to create a
bunch of initial streams at once. When doing so, it could be annoying
to have to mark all of the new stream notification messages as read.
Thus to make this process smoother, we should automatically mark
the messages generated by the Notification Bot in the notifications
(announcements) stream, as well as in the newly created stream itself
as read by the stream creator.

Django’s default FileSystemFinder disallows STATICFILES_DIRS from

because STATIC_ROOT is supposed to be the result of collecting all the
static files in the project, not one of the potentially many sources
of static files.

This replaces the two custom Google authentication backends originally
written in 2012 with using the shared python-social-auth codebase that
we already use for the GitHub authentication backend. These are:
* GoogleMobileOauth2Backend, the ancient code path for mobile
authentication last used by the EOL original Zulip Android app.
* The `finish_google_oauth2` code path in zerver/views/auth.py, which
was the webapp (and modern mobile app) Google authentication code
path.
This change doesn't fix any known bugs; its main benefit is that we
get to remove hundreds of lines of security-sensitive semi-duplicated
code, replacing it with a widely trusted, high quality third-party
library.
As of commit 8c199fd44c (#12667) this
file is no longer generated. Handlebars compile errors are raised as
webpack errors.

This commit adds a new setting to the user's notification settings that
will change the behaviour of the unread count in the title bar and

When enabled, the title bar will show the count of unread private messages
and mentions. When disabled, the title bar will act as before, showing
the total number of unread messages.

The approach taken here is basically use user IDs in operator that
support it when sending the request for fetching the messages
(see comments in code for more details).
We implicitly assume settings.NOTIFICATION_BOT is not None just a few lines
above, in
sender = get_system_bot(settings.NOTIFICATION_BOT)
notifications.append(
internal_prep_private_message(
realm=user_profile.realm,
sender=sender,
...
This will make it easier to have access to the stream creator.
The indirection also isn't really adding anything, especially given that the
announce message is inlined just above.
Add new custom profile field type, External account.
External account field links user's social media
profile with account. e.g. GitHub, Twitter, etc.
Fixes part of #12302
By importing a few view modules in the validation test itself we
can remove a few endpoints which were marked as buggy. What was
happening was that the view functions weren't imported and hence
the arguments map was not filled. Thus the test complained that
there was documentation for request parameters that seemed to be
missing in the code. Also, for the events register endpoint, we
have renamed one of the documented request parameters from
"stream" to "topic" (the API itself was not modified though).
We add a new "documentation_pending" attribute to req variables
so that any arguments not currently documented but should be
documented can be properly accounted for.
Use UserProfiles instead of emails to fetch recipient objects for
narrowing; this is cleaner as it avoids unnecessary parsing and
unparsing. We just map ids/emails operand to user profiles and then
use common code from there.

Now that we have a system for storing HTTP headers for each integration, we
should fix the send_all button. Previously, it used the same user entered
custom HTTP header (from the GUI) for all of the fixtures, but now we
automatically determine the header with the new system instead.
When parsing custom HTTP headers in the integrations dev panel, http
headers from fixtures system and the send_webhook_fixture_message
we now use a singular source of logic: standardize_headers which
will take care of converting a dictionary of input headers into a
standard form that Django expects.
Now that we store HTTP headers in a way that is easy to retreive
by specifying the integration name and fixture name, we should
use it to pre-load the "Custom HTTP Headers" field in the
integrations dev panel.
This function is an alternative to get_admin_users that we use in all
places where we explicitly want only human administrative users (not
administrative bots). The following commits will rename
get_admin_users for better clarity.
We also document support for user IDs in the pm-with narrow operator.

bottom and graying out inactive streams. The previous logic is still
the default "automatic", but this gives users more control. See the

Fixes#11524.
The RealmAuditLog object ID was stored in the event sent to the
deferred_work queue as a means to update the row's extra_data field.
The extra_data field then stores the location of the export.
This reordering was originally made with regard to the delete after
access feature for the public export. However, this reordering is
more correct overall, i.e., the object should be created before the
event pertaining to the object is sent.
Mostly rewritten by Tim Abbott to ensure it correctly implements the
desired security model.
Administrators should have access to users' real email address so that
they can contact users out-of-band.
Clients won't have access to user email addresses, and thus won't be
able to compute gravatars.
The tests for this are a bit messy, in large part because our tests
for get_events call subsections of it, rather than the main function.
This commit also adds a small functionality change where the results of
each webhook fixture message sent is now displayed to the user.
With a small tweak by tabbott to fix a styling bug.
Fixes#12122.
Note: If you're going to send fixtures which are not JSON or of the
text/plain content type, make sure you set the correct content type
in the custom headers.
E.g. For the wordpress fixtures the "Content-Type" should be set to
"application/x-www-form-urlencoded".
This commit introduces a simple field where the user can now specify custom
HTTP headers. This commit does not introduce an improved system for storing
HTTP headers as fixtures - such a change would modify both the existing unit
tests as well as this devtool.
This commit adds a new developer tool: The "integrations dev panel"
which will serve as a replacement for the send_webhook_fixture_message
management command as a way to test integrations with much greater ease.
Added a new button at the bottom of the stream list which redirects

We had a report in the thread around
https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/31-production-help/topic/Apache-based.20SSO/near/741013
that confirmation links were taking the user to the /register form on
the Apache server, which of course doesn't work because the Apache
server architecture we have is intended to only serve a single
endpoint, /accounts/login/sso, and not any static assets (etc.).
This manifested as users getting a broke page with a bunch of JS
errors about missing static assets when trying to sign up for an
account. The right fix is to ensure that we serve these confirmation
links (and maybe in the future, redirects) to the nginx server.
This renames Subscription.in_home_view field to is_muted, for greater
clarity as to what it does just from seeing the setting name, without
having to look it up.
Also disabled an obsolete test_migrations test.
Fixes#10042.
This commit migrates the Subscription's notification fields from a
BooleanField to a NullBooleanField where a value of None means to
inherit the value from user's profile.
Also includes a migrations to set the corresponding settings to None
if they match the user profile's values. This migration helps us in
getting rid of the weird "Apply to all" widget that we offered on
subscription settings page.
The mobile apps can't handle None appearing as the stream-level
notification settings, so for backwards-compatibility we arrange to
only send True/False to the mobile apps by applying those defaults
server-side. We introduce a notification_settings_null value within a
client_capabilities structure that newer versions of the mobile apps
can use to request the new model.
This mobile compatibility code is pretty effectively tested by the
existing test_events tests for the subscriptions subsystem.

drop or paste a file into the compose message box.

This commit creates a new organization setting that determines whether
a user can invite other users to streams. Previously this was linked
to the waiting period threshold, but this was both not documented and
overly limiting.

This requires follow-up work to make the create stream policy setting

An endpoint was created in zerver/views. Basic rate-limiting was
implemented using RealmAuditLog. The idea here is to simply log each
export event as a realm_exported event. The number of events
occurring in the time delta is checked to ensure that the weekly
limit is not exceeded.
The event is published to the 'deferred_work' queue processor to
prevent the export process from being killed after 60s.
Upon completion of the export the realm admin(s) are notified.

Previously, we had some expensive-to-calculate keys in
zulip_default_context, especially around enabled authentication
backends, which in total were a significant contributor to the
performance of various logged-out pages. Now, these keys are only
computed for the login/registration pages where they are needed.
This is a moderate performance optimization for the loading time of
many logged-out pages.
Closes#11929.
Previously, we could 500 if an organization administrator scanned
possible PreregistrationUser IDs looking for a valid invitation they
can interact with.
They couldn't do anything, so no security issue, but this fixes that
case to just be a 400 error as it should be.
The hope is that by having a shorter list of initial streams, it'll
avoid some potential confusion confusion about the value of topics.
At the very least, having 5 streams each with 1 topic was not a good
way to introduce Zulip.
This commit minimizes changes to the message content in
`send_initial_realm_messages` to keep the diff readable. Future commits will
reshape the content.
I'm surprised that this wasn't a mypy error; we were passing a Realm
object as an integer, and predictably, this resulted in us
constructing a cache key that looked like this:
stream_by_realm_and_name:<Realm: zulip 1>:dd5...
This block of code with 2 database queries is solely for the /devlogin
endpoint. Removing that block from the /login code path makes it
easier to test /login perf in development.
Follow up on 92dc363. This modifies the ScheduledEmail model
and send_future_email to properly support multiple recipients.
Tweaked by tabbott to add some useful explanatory comments and fix
issues with the migration.
Now that we've more or less stabilized our authentication/registration
subsystem how we want it, it seems worth adding proper documentation
for this.
Fixes#7619.
The night logo synchronization on the settings page was perfect, but
the actual display logic had a few problems:
* We were including the realm_logo in context_processors, even though
it is only used in home.py.
* We used different variable names for the templating in navbar.html
than anywhere else the codebase.
* The behavior that the night logo would default to the day logo if
only one was uploaded was not correctly implemented for the navbar
position, either in the synchronization for updates code or the
logic in the navbar.html templates.
This is important for situations such as with our Zapier app,
where the requesting user may be a bot that would like to access
its owner's subscriptions.
Tweaked by tabbott to eliminate the 2^N growth of cases in
do_get_streams.
This allows us to have some features using bugdown rendering where
inline image previews will not be rendered (which would be problematic
for e.g. stream descriptions).
Fixing this involves fixing the backend to handle unchanged field
submissions of the Zoom credentials without trying to re-validate the
credentials (for performance) as well as to fetch the already-sent
secret.
Visually, #zoom_help_text acts like
.organization-settings-parent div:first-of-type when the Zoom option
is selected, but isn't treated as such.
No visual change with the #google_hangouts_domain change; just there to make
the code more readable/defensible.
We do not anticipate our UI for showing stream descriptions looking
reasonable for multi-line descriptions, so we should just ban creating
them.
Given the frontend changes, multi-line descriptions are only likely to
show up from importing content from other tools, in which case
replacing newlines with spaces is cleaner than the alternative.
For Google auth, the multiuse invite key should be stored in the
csrf_state sent to google along with other values like is_signup,
mobile_flow_otp.
For social auth, the multiuse invite key should be passed as params to
the social-auth backend. The passing of the key is handled by
social_auth pipeline and made available to us when the auth is
completed.
For internal stream messages, most of the time, we have access to
a Stream object. For the few corner cases where we don't, it is a
much cleaner approach to have a separate function that accepts a
stream name than having one multi-option helper that accepts both
names and objects.
If the caller has access to a Stream object, it is wasteful to
query a database for a stream by ID or name. In addition, not
having to go through stream names eliminates various classes of
possible bugs involved with getting a Stream object back.
Add all the stop words to page_params, reading from the
`zulip_english.stop` database, with caching to avoid loading the file
on every page load.
Part of #10592.
This causes changing the email_address_visibility field to actually
modify what user_profile.email values are generated for users, both on
user creation and afterwards as email addresses are edited.
The overall feature isn't yet complete, but this brings us pretty close.
This is primarily a feature for onboarding, where an organization
administrator might send a bunch of random test messages as part of
joining, but then want a pristine organization when their users later
join.
But it can theoretically be used for other use cases (e.g. for
moderation or removing threads that are problematic in some way).
Tweaked by tabbott to handle corner cases with
is_history_public_to_subscribers.
Fixes#10912.
This replaces the current usage of stream names with stream ids.
This commit also removes the `traditional` attribute from the invite
form as now we are sending stream_ids as an argument; this was the
only place in the codebase we used traditional=true, and it's great to
have it removed.
Apparently, the "continue to registration" flow used a subtly invalid
way of encoding the full name. We put in the query part of the action
URL of the HTML form, but apparently HTML forms with a `GET` type will
ignore the query part (replacing it with any input values), which
makes sense but doesn't do what we want here. There are a few sane
ways to fix it, but given that the encoding logic we had before for
including the name in the URL was ugly, I'm pretty happy with just
adding a hidden input to the form for the name.
As part of Google+ being removed, they've eliminated support for the
/plus/v1/people/me endpoint. Replace it with the very similar
/oauth2/v3/userinfo endpoint.
This doesn't have any security impact, since we overwrote any other
fields in any case, and also this step happens before the security
part of input validation for stream creation. But this does improve
error messages if one tries to specify other arguments, and also makes
more clear that the `description` argument is supported here.
This fixes an annoying bug where clicking to subscribe to a stream
would change the color shown in the "manage streams" UI immediately
after you click.
Fixes#11072.
This adds a setting under "Notification" section of
"Organization settings" tab, which enables Organization administrator to
control whether the missed message emails include the message content or
not.
Fixes: #11123.
Multiple delete message requests for the same message sometimes caused
a 500 error. This happened via the normal IntegrityError being thrown
by delete message/archiving code.
This was manually reproduced by adding latency in function
move_messages_to_archive() in retention.py and
delete_message_backend() in views.py. This addresses the problem by
adding code to handle the exception and throw JsonableError to convert
500 to 400 errors, with an automated test.
You can now pass in an info field with a value
like "out to lunch" to the /users/me/status,
and the server will include that in its outbound
events.
The semantics here are that both "away" and
"status_text" have to have defined values in order
to cause changes. You can omit the keys or
pass in None when values don't change.
The way you clear info is to pass the empty
string.
We also change page_params to have a dictionary
called "user_status" instead of a set of user
ids. This requires a few small changes on the
frontend. (We will add "status_text" support in
subsequent commits; the changes here just keep
the "away" feature working correctly.)
We now have single function that handle both away
and not-away.
This refactoring sets us up to piggyback "info" more
easily onto status updates.
The only thing that changes here is that we don't
delete database rows any more when users revoke
their away status. Instead we just set the status
to NORMAL.
This commit fixes an error in the logic for allowing admins to edit any
user's CPF (custom profile field) values. The logic allowing users to
edit their own CPF values is however sound. What happens is that of all
the CPF types, for "choice fields" as well as "URL" and "date fields",
when the value is reset/deleted/cleared by the admin in the Admin UI
(organization settings), the frontend would send a null (empty string)
value to the backend for that custom profile field (as this is, after
all, the new value in this case). This would then triggers the backend
validators to return an error message.
We fix this by using the method check_remove_custom_profile_field_value,
that both code paths (user editing their own CPFs and admin editing a
user's CPF) can call.
This moves the logic for deleting the user's custom profile field
value in the remove_user_custom_profile_data view function to a method
named check_remove_user_custom_profile_value in actions.py, so that we
can reuse it in the next commit.
Previously, the subscription color attribute had a validator of
check_string, but this is insufficient. Hence this commit update the
validator used to check_color. Fixes#11268.

This adds a proper template for the /digest page, making it a
reasonable way to view the digest email content for development and
debugging.
Fixes: #11016.
Since we have already added the `invite_as` field to models, we can now
replace usage of `invite_as_admin` properly with its equivalent `invite_as
== PreregistrationUser.INVITE_AS['REALM_ADMIN']`.
Hence, also removed now redundant `invite_as`.
This endpoint serves requests which might originate from an image
preview link which had an http url and the message holding the image
link was rendered before we introduced thumbnailing. In that case
we would have used a camo proxy to proxy http content over https and
avoid mix content warnings.
In near future, we plan to drop use of camo and just rely on thumbor
to serve such images. This endpoint helps maintain backward
compatibility for links which were already rendered.
This is somewhat hacky, in that in order to do what we're doing, we
need to parse the HTML of the rendered page to extract the first
paragraph to include in the open graph description field. But
BeautifulSoup does a good job of it.
This carries a nontrivial performance penalty for loading these pages,
but overall /help/ is a low-traffic site compared to the main app, so
it doesn't matter much.
(As a sidenote, it wouldn't be a bad idea to cache this stuff).
There's lots of things we can improve in this, largely through editing
the articles, but we can deal with that over time.
Thanks to Rishi for writing all the tests.
This change lets us eliminate the need for new authentication backends
to edit get_auth_backends_data, since we're just computing it from the
official registry in zproject/backends.py. Should save a few lines of
work whenever we add a new auth backend, and make that more accessible
to new contributors.
This adds a new realm_logo field, which is a horizontal-format logo to
be displayed in the top-left corner of the webapp, and any other
places where we might want a wide-format branding of the organization.
Tweaked significantly by tabbott to rebase, fix styling, etc.
Fixing the styling of this feature's loading indicator caused me to
notice the loading indicator for the realm_icon feature was also ugly,
so I fixed that too.
Fixes#7995.
It appears that our i18n logic was only using the recipient's language
for logged-in emails, so even properly tagged for translation and
translated emails for functions like "Find my team" and "password
reset" were being always sent in English.
With great work by Vishnu Ks on the tests and the to_emails code path.
This should make it possible for blueslip error reports to be sent on
our logged-out portico pages, which should in turn make it possible to
debug any such issues as they occur.
Apparently, while the main code path through
login_or_register_remote_user was correctly calling
remote_user_to_email(username) to get a proper email address for
situations where auth username != email (i.e. when SSO_APPEND_DOMAIN
is set), we neglected to do so in the mobile_flow_otp corner case.
Fixes#11005.
Also, add a new notification sound, "ding". It comes from
https://freesound.org, where the original Zulip notification sound comes
from as well. In the future, new sounds can be added by adding audio
files to the `static/audio/notification_sounds` directory.
Tweaked significantly by tabbott:
* Avoided removing static/audio/zulip.ogg, because that file is
checked for by old versions of the desktop app.
* Added a views check for the sound being valid + tests.
* Added additional tests.
* Restructured the test_events test to be cleaner.
* Removed check_bool_or_string.
* Increased max length of notification_sound.
* Provide available_notification_sounds in events data set if global
notifications settings are requested.
Fixes#8051.
A key part of this is the new helper, get_user_by_delivery_email. Its
verbose name is important for clarity; it should help avoid blind
copy-pasting of get_user (which we'll also want to rename).
Unfortunately, it requires detailed understanding of the context to
figure out which one to use; each is used in about half of call sites.
Another important note is that this PR doesn't migrate get_user calls
in the tests except where not doing so would cause the tests to fail.
This probably deserves a follow-up refactor to avoid bugs here.
This is preparatory work for settings controlling who can see user
emails; it includes the API-level support for editing it, but no code
to actually enforce the policy.
This release is from 2018-08-22, a little over 100 days ago.
It was the first release with the important fix so that when the
server advises it to stop displaying a notification because the user
has read the message (as the SEND_REMOVE_PUSH_NOTIFICATIONS server
setting enables), the app doesn't instead replace the notification
with a broken one reading "null". We have that setting running now
on chat.zulip.org, and intend to roll it out more broadly soon.
The `# take 0` thing is a slightly absurd workaround for the fact
that our funky out-of-line way of marking lines to ignore doesn't
work right if there are multiple such lines in a given file that
are equal modulo leading and trailing whitespace.
This adds a function that sends provided email to all administrators
of a realm, but in a single email. As a result, send_email now takes
arguments to_user_ids and to_emails instead of to_user_id and
to_email.
We adjust other APIs to match, but note that send_future_email does
not yet support the multiple recipients model for good reasons.
Tweaked by tabbott to modify `manage.py deliver_email` to handle
backwards-compatibily for any ScheduledEmail objects already in the
database.
Fixes#10896.
While this would never happen for a real article, this prevents a 500
in this case for a situation which is definitely user error and should
be a 40x (in this case, 404).
As part of this, we refactor the main view code to do validation in a
single code path, since the semi-duplicated-in-3-places logic was
getting pretty buggy.
This is the first step of letting users use Zulip markdown in their
SHORT_TEXT and LONG_TEXT custom profile fields, so that they can
include emphasis, links, etc.
This doesn't include any frontend logic yet, however.
This library was absolutely essential as part of our Python 2->3
migration process, but all of its calls should be either no-ops or
encode/decode operations.
Note also that the library has been wrong since the incorrect
refactoring in 1f9244e060.
Fixes#10807.
This adds a web flow and management command for reactivating a Zulip
organization, with confirmation from one of the organization
administrators.
Further work is needed to make the emails nicer (ideally, we'd send
one email with all the admins on the `To` line, but the `send_email`
library doesn't support that).
Fixes#10783.
With significant tweaks to the email text by tabbott.
We're trying to sweep "subject" out of the codebase,
even when it has nothing to do our legacy "subject"
field. The rewording here will prevent some linter
noise.
We start by including functions that do custom
queries for topic history.
The goal of this library is partly to quarantine
the legacy "subject" column on Message.
This is a preparator refactor for supporting hosting different Tornado
processes on different servers; to look up which Tornado server we
should be sending the event to, we'll need the realm object.
This supports guest user in the user-info-form-modal as well as in the
role section of the admin-user-table.
With some fixes by Tim Abbott and Shubham Dhama.
The purpose of this commit is to pass information
to the frontend whether the message response recieved
has been limited due to plan restrictions or not.
To implement this, the backend for limiting the message
history had to be rewritten as we used to fetch
only the message rows whose id was greater than
first_visible_message_id. The filtered rows gives us
no information on whether the message history was
limited or not. So the backend was rewritten to not
do any restriction of limiting the message rows while
making the query. The limiting of rows is now done in
post_process_limited_query which will also return back
the value of history_limited flag.
Tweaked by tabbott to note a few cases where the results are
incorrect. I'm merging this despite those, because those cases don't
impact the correctness of the feature, and it may have tricky
performance implications to fix correctly.
Bots are not allowed to use the same name as
other users in the realm (either bot or human).
This is kind of a big commit, but I wanted to
combine the post/patch (aka add/edit) checks
into one commit, since it's a change in policy
that affects both codepaths.
A lot of the noise is in tests. We had good
coverage on the previous code, including some places
like event testing where we were expediently
not bothering to use different names for
different bots in some longer tests. And then
of course I test some new scenarios that are relevant
with the new policy.
There are two new functions:
check_bot_name_available:
very simple Django query
check_change_bot_full_name:
this diverges from the 3-line
check_change_full_name, where the latter
is still used for the "humans" use case
And then we just call those in appropriate places.
Note that there is still a loophole here
where you can get two bots with the same
name if you reactivate a bot named Fred
that was inactive when the second bot named
Fred was created. Also, we don't attempt
to fix historical data. So this commit
shouldn't be considered any kind of lockdown,
it's just meant to help people from
inadvertently creating two bots of the same
name where they don't intend to. For more
context, we are continuing to allow two
human users in the same realm to have the
same full name, and our code should generally
be tolerant of that possibility. (A good
example is our new mention syntax, which disambiguates
same-named people using ids.)
It's also worth noting that our web app client
doesn't try to scrub full_name from its payload in
situations where the user has actually only modified other
fields in the "Edit bot" UI. Starting here
we just handle this on the server, since it's
easy to fix there, and even if we fixed it in the web
app, there's no guarantee that other clients won't be
just as brute force. It wasn't exactly broken before,
but we'd needlessly write rows to audit tables.
Fixes#10509
Currently, if there is only one admin in realm and admin tries
to updates any non-adminuser's full name it throws error,
"Cannot remove only realm admin". Because in `/json/users/<user_id>`
api check_if_last_admin_is_changed is checked even if property
is_admin is not changed.
This commit fix this issue and add tests for it.
These lazy imports save a significant amount of time on Zulip's core
import process, because mock imports pbr, which in turn import
pkgresources, which is in turn incredibly slow to import.
Fixes part of #9953.
Before, presence information for an entire realm could only be queried via
the `POST /api/v1/users/me/presence` endpoint. However, this endpoint also
updates the presence information for the user making the request. Therefore,
bot users are not allowed to access this endpoint because they don't have
any presence data.
This commit adds a new endpoint `GET /api/v1/realm/presence` that just
returns the presence information for the realm of the caller.
Fixes#10651.
If cordelia searches on pm-with:iago@zulip.com,cordelia@zulip.com,
we now properly treat that the same way as pm-with:iago@zulip.com.
Before this fix, the query would initially go through the
huddle code path. The symptom wasn't completely obvious, as
eventually a deeper function would return a recipient id
corresponding to a single PM with @iago@zulip.com, but we would
only get messages where iago was the recipient, and not any
messages where he was the sender to cordelia.
I put the helper function for this in zerver/lib/addressee, which
is somewhat speculative. Eventually, we'll want pm-with queries
to allow for user ids, and I imagine there will be some shared
logic with other Addressee code in terms of how we handle these
strings. The way we deal with lists of emails/users for various
endpoints is kind of haphazard in the current code, although
granted it's mostly just repeating the same simple patterns. It
would be nice for some of this code to converge a bit. This
affects new messages, typing indicators, search filters, etc.,
and some endpoints have strange legacy stuff like supporting
JSON-encoded lists, so it's not trivial to clean this up.
Tweaked by tabbott to add some additional tests.
This is a preparatory commit for upcoming changes to move
/avatar/ to be a logged in or API accessible endpoint.
Basically we rename this variable because the new name is more
appropriate in the situation. Also user_profile will be used to
hold the user_profile of person accessing the endpoint in coming up
commit.
Tweaked by tabbott to use a declared constant rather than just use
5000 in multiple places; this also means we can change the count
without updating translations.
Fixes#10446.
The `match_subject` field is supposed to contain HTML; that's how
the highlighting is done. But the `subject` field is plain text --
it must be encoded if we want corresponding HTML.
Of the three places the `match_subject` field is populated -- two
here in messages_in_narrow_backend, one in get_messages_backend --
two of them already do this correctly, via get_search_fields.
Fix the remaining one, where in a `/messages/matches_narrow` query
we populate `matches_subject` even if the query didn't involve a
full-text search.
This doesn't affect the webapp, which ignores `match_subject` unless
it knows it did a full-text search; nor the mobile app, which
doesn't use `/messages/matches_narrow` at all.
This adds a feature in the "Notification" section of "Settings" tab,
which lets user enable or disable login emails notification.
Tweaked by tabbott to simplify the test.
Fixes: #5795, progress towards #5854.
In user type custom field, field value is list of user ids. We weren't
converting list to json object in update event payload. This throws
error in frontend, cause we store stringify representation of custom
field value. Therefore, after update event is recieved field-value-
type gets updated to array from string which throws json parsing error.
We've been getting reports from users that our Freshdesk webhook
isn't working correctly. It turns out that the issue had nothing
to do with the webhook implementation itself!
In freshdesk/doc.md, we have a JSON template we ask users to
copy/paste into a textbox in the Freshdesk UI. That JSON template
contains "{{" and "}}" characters which we escaped as Unicode
decimals to prevent clashes with Jinja2 syntax in other parts
of the same template. This worked for a while!
But thanks to the changes introduced as part of the
nested_code_blocks extension, such escaped characters were never
decoded, leading users to copy/paste the same template but with
raw escaped unicode representations of "{{" and "}}" inside. And
that eventually broke our webhook implementation.
This commit makes sure that such characters are properly "unescaped",
just for Freshdesk docs.
If `TEXT_EMOJISET` is currently selected emojiset then fallback to
`GOOGLE_EMOJISET` for displaying emojis in emoji picker and
composebox typeahead. We should pre-load the spritesheets in`emoji.js`
even in case of text emojiset otherwise on slow networks emoji picker
will appear empty initially.
Issue: When you created a new organization with /new, the "new login"
emails were emailed. We previously had a hack of adding the
.just_registered property to the user Python object to attempt to
prevent the emails, and checking that in zerver/signals.py. This
commit gets rid of the .just_registered check.
Instead of the .just_registered check, this checks if the user has
joined more than a minute before.
A test test_dont_send_login_emails_for_new_user_registration_logins
already exists.
Tweaked by tabbott to introduce the constant JUST_CREATED_THRESHOLD.
Fixes#10179.
Right now it only has one function, but the function
we removed never really belonged in actions.py, and
now we have better test coverage on actions.py, which
is an important module to get to 100%.
This implements a significant performance optimization for users
clicking the `Private messages` narrow in the Zulip UI, especially for
those users who do not have 50 recent private messages in an
organization with a lot of stream message traffic (because then
previously, postgres needed to scan through a huge amount of history
to find enough private messages).
The database index powering it can also support many other queries we
might want to do in the future to support "recent conversations" type
features.
Fixes#6896.
Since otp_encrypt_api_key only encrypts API keys, it doesn't require
access to the full UserProfile object to work properly. Now the
parameter it accepts is just the API key.
This is preparatory refactoring for removing the api_key field on
UserProfile.
random_api_key, the function we use to generate random tokens for API
keys, has been moved to zerver/lib/utils.py because it's used in more
parts of the codebase (apart from user creation), and having it in
zerver/lib/create_user.py was prone to cyclic dependencies.
The function has also been renamed to generate_api_key to have an
imperative name, that makes clearer what it does.
