Prakhar Pratyush b17a006bf0 data_import: Remove gitter data import tool.
Gitter broke their older API as part of being integrated
into Matrix.

Their announcement blog says:
"Anything left using the Gitter APIs will need to be
updated to use the Matrix API"

This commit drops the legacy Gitter import tool and
we plan to build a new one for Matrix in future.

Lauryn Menard 8e953d9896 streams-settings-overlay: Update hash for stream to channel rename.
Updates the base hash for the streams setting overlay to be
"channels" instead of "streams".

Because there are Welcome Bot and Notification Bot messages that
would have been sent with the "/#streams" hash, we will need to
support parsing those overlay hashes as an alias for "/#channels"
permanently.

Part of the stream to channels rename project.

N-Shar-ma d64d535c2d todo: Require space after colon to separate task title from description.
This fixes the annoying behaviour where a task title with a url in it,
for example, "Fix issue https://github/com/zulip/zulip/issues/1234"
would be wrongly split into a description at the `:` in the url.

Anders Kaseorg d32d4434dd partial: Replace returns plugin with an annotation.
The returns plugin hasn’t been updated for mypy ≥ 1.6. This
annotation is more limited in that it only supports a fixed number of

our purposes.

Lauryn Menard 62e17c987f exceptions: Add IncompatibleParametersError as a JsonableError.
Creates an IncompatibleParametersError to be used in cases where
there are two (or more) optional parameters for an endpoint that
are incompatible with each other, e.g. there's a parameter for a
user name and a user ID but only one should be sent in the request
to identify the user.

Documents the error on the /api/rest-error-handling article.

Updates the PATCH users/me/subscriptions/muted_topics endpoint to
use this error when both the stream and stream_id parameters are
passed (note this endpoint is currently deprecated).

Prakhar Pratyush c727b36e9c soft_reactivate: Soft reactivate if group mention has < 12 members.
Earlier, we didn't soft-reactivate users for group mentions
at all because it wasn't easy to calculate group size.

Now, we will soft reactivate if the user group mentions has

We don't reactivate all users because a user group can have a
very large size, which can lead to large backlogs in the
deferred-work queue.

Alex Vandiver 11dd6791c4 management: Provide a common lockfile dir, and a decorator for it.
Factor out the repeated pattern of taking a lock, or immediately
aborting with a message if it cannot be acquired. The exit code in
that situation is changed to be exit code 1, rather than the successful
0; we are likely missing new work since that process started.

We move the lockfiles to a common directory under `/srv/zulip-locks`
rather than muddy up `/home/zulip/deployments`.

tnmkr 5128d8f9af streams: Add creator field.
Adds nullable creator field, containing a reference to the user who
created the stream. When creating a stream, acting user is set as
the creator of the stream. Since API calls to create streams always
have an acting user, this field should always be set when streams
are created using the API.

Because streams can be created with no acting user, this field is
nullable. We try to backfill existing streams using RealmAuditLog table,
but not all streams are guaranteed to have a recorded create log. Thus
this new field is left null when it cannot be backfilled. We also set
this field to null when the creator user is deleted.

Mateusz Mandera 962ab13203 push_notifs: Make push_notifications_enabled more resistant to flapping.
Fixes #28403

Uses redis to remember the last time push notifications were experienced
working. This needs to work across processes, so can't be done just in
memory.
As this is transient data that's fairly harmless to lose and thus
doesn't require the persistence benefits of the database, and we're
keeping a single "row", so don't need an entire new db table, we settle
on using redis instead of postgres. This is also consistent with how we
store other kinds of such transient data.

Earlier a extra audit log entry of type

that audit log entry.

There is no need to create these entry as we would still
have the required data from the "OLD_VALUE" field in the
audit log entry created when changing the setting and this
also makes it consistent with the entries created for
other operations like stream creation.

f92d43c690 added uses of `@overload` to probide multiple type
signatures for `access_message`, based on the `get_user_message`
parameter. Unfortunately, mypy does not check the function body
against overload signatures, so it allows type errors to go
undetected.

Replace the overloads with two functions, for one of which also
returns the usermessage. The third form, of only returning if the
usermessage exists, is not in a high-enough performance endpoint that
a third form is worth maintaining; it uses the usermessage form.

guest user, the invitation prompts allows them to choose whether the
guest should be added to default streams or not. This is useful, because
since we don't have per-role default streams configs, they may want
default streams to be for full Members.

SCIM provisioning doesn't have this control, since a newly provisioned
user gets created via a direct do_create_user call, thus adding them to
the organization's default streams, with no workaround possible aside of
just getting rid of default streams in the organization.

To make provisioning guests in such an organization usable, we add a
simple config option to create them with no streams. It's configured by
adding
```
"create_guests_without_streams": True
```

to the config dict in settings.SCIM_CONFIG.

Sahil Singh 6c2535fe46 bots: Avoid multiple active bots with the same name.
Creating a bot with a name that is already in use
will raise an error. However, by deactivating
the existing bot, creating a new bot with the
same name, and then reactivating the original bot,
it is possible to have multiple bots with the same name.

To fix this, we check if the bot name is already
in use in the active bots list. If it is,
an error will be raised, prompting either the
name of the existing bot to be changed or
the bot to be deactivated.

This is a prep commit to add a 'recipient_users' parameter to
the 'internal_send_huddle_message' function.

'emails' is no longer a required parameter. We can use either
of the 'emails' or 'recipient_users' parameter. 'emails' is
eventually used to fetch 'recipient_users', so if the
'recipient_users' is already available we should use that to

Alex Vandiver 7de527f3bc soft_deactivation: Use much faster bulk_insert_all_ums.
As noted in the docstring for `bulk_insert_ums`, this is at least one
order of magnitude faster than using `bulk_create`. This also
includes a `ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING` which allows multiple

Alex Vandiver 7988aad159 user_message: Use INSERT ... ON CONFLICT for historical UM creation.
Rather than use a bulk insert via Django, use the faster
`bulk_insert_all_ums` that we already have. This also adds a `ON
CONFLICT` clause, to make the insert resilient to race conditions.

There are currently two callsites, with different desired `ON
CONFLICT` behaviours:
- For `notify_reaction_update`, if the `UserMessage` had already been
   created, we would have done nothing to change it.
- For `do_update_message_flags`, we would have ensured a specific bit
   was (un)set.

This restriction is placed upon **enabling** a backend - so

able to use it. This allows us to make exceptions and enable a backend
for an org manually via the shell, and to grandfather organizations into
keeping the backend they have been relying on.

Relying on naive `os.mkdir` is not enough especially now that the

We can't use `lockfile` context manager from
`zerver.lib.context_managers`, because we want the custom behavior of
failing if the lock can't be acquired, instead of waiting.
That's because if an instance of this gets stuck, we don't want to start
queueing up more processes waiting forever whenever the cronjob runs
again and fail->exit is preferrable instead.

The widening of the time between when a process is marked for
reload (at Tornado startup) and when it sends reload events makes it
unlikely-to-impossible that a single `/` request will span both of

Remove it, as it is not worth the complication. The bad behaviour it
is attempting to prevent (of a reload right after opening `/`) was
always still possible -- if the `/` request completed right before
Tornado restarted -- so it is not clear that it was ever worth the
complication.

Alex Vandiver 22837fc1b4 message_edit: Carry the QuerySet through as much as possible.
Rather than pass around a list of message objects in-memory, we
instead keep the same constructed QuerySet which includes the later
propagated messages (if any), and use that same query to pick out
affected Attachment objects, rather than limiting to the set of ids.
This is not necessarily a win -- the list of message-ids *may* be very
long, and thus the query may be more concise, easier to send to
PostgreSQL, and faster for PostgreSQL to parse. However, the list of
ids is almost certainly better-indexed.

After processing the move, the QuerySet must be re-defined as a search
of ids (and possibly a very long list of such), since there is no
other way which is guaranteed to correctly single out the moved
messages. At this point, it is mostly equivalent to the list of
Message objects, and certainly takes no less memory.
2024-02-14 12:27:03 -08:00
Alex Vandiver 5c96f94206 topic: Use a single SQL statement to propagate message moves.
Rather than use `bulk_update()` to batch-move chunks of messages, use
a single SQL query to move the messages. This is much more efficient
for large topic moves. Since the `edit_history` field is not yet
JSON (see #26496) this requires that PostgreSQL cast the current data
into `jsonb`, append the new data (also cast to `jsonb`), and then
re-cast that as text.

For single-message moves, this _increases_ the SQL query count by one,
since we have to re-query for the updated data from the database after
the bulk update. However, this is overall still a performance
improvement, which improves to 2x or 3x for larger topic moves. Below
is a table of duration in seconds to run `do_update_message` to move a
topic to a new stream, based on messages in the topic, for before and
after this change:

| Topic size |  Before  |  After  |
| ---------- | -------- | ------- |
| 1          |   0.1036 |  0.0868 |
| 2          |   0.1108 |  0.0925 |

Alex Vandiver 822131fef4 message: Add a bulk_access_stream_messages_query method.
This applies access restrictions in SQL, so that individual messages
do not need to be walked one-by-one. It only functions for stream
messages.

Use of this method significantly speeds up checks if we moved "all
visible messages" in a topic, since we no longer need to walk every
remaining message in the old topic to determine that at least one was
visible to the user. Similarly, it significantly speeds up merging
into existing topics, since it no longer must walk every message in
the new topic to determine if the user could see at least one.

Finally, it unlocks the ability to bulk-update only messages the user
has access to, in a single query (see subsequent commit).

Alex Vandiver 07c4291749 message: Rewrite personals query to be more performant and accurate.
The previous query suffered from bad corner cases when the user had
received a large number of direct messages but sent very few,
comparatively. This mean that the first half of the UNION would
retrieve a very large number of UserMessage rows, requiring fetching a
large number of Message rows, merely to throw them away upon
determining that the recipient was the current user.

Instead of merging two queries of "last 1k received" + "last 1k sent",
we instead make better use of the UserMessage rows to find "last 1k
sent or received." This may change the list of recipients, as large
disparities in sent/received messages may result in pushing the
most-recently-sent users off of the list. These are likely uncommon
edge cases, however -- and the disparity is the whole reason for the
performance problem.

This also provides more correct answers. In the case where a user's
1001'th message sent was to person A today, but my most recent message
received was from them yesterday, the previous plan would show the
message I received yesterday message-id as the max, and not the more
recent message I sent today.

While we could theoretically raise the `RECENT_CONVERSATIONS_LIMIT` to
more frequently match the same recipient list as previously, this
increases the cost of the most common cases unreasonably. With a
1000-message limit, the common cases are slightly faster, and the tail
latencies are very much improved; raising `RECENT_CONVERSATIONS_LIMIT`
would increase the result similarity to the old algorithm, at the cost
of the p50 and p75.

|        |   Old   |   New   |
| ------ | ------- | ------- |
| Mean   | 0.05287 | 0.02520 |
| p50    | 0.00695 | 0.00556 |
| p75    | 0.05592 | 0.03351 |
| p90    | 0.14645 | 0.08026 |
| p95    | 0.20181 | 0.10906 |
| p99    | 0.30691 | 0.16014 |
| p99.9  | 0.57894 | 0.19521 |
| max    | 22.0610 | 0.22184 |

On the whole, however, the much more bounded worst case are worth the
small changes to the resultset.

Alex Vandiver 3aea67a8ed s3: Only use get_bucket to get to boto3 clients and resources.
boto3 has two different modalities of making API calls -- through
resources, and through clients. Resources are a higher-level
abstraction, and thus more generally useful, but some APIs are only
accessible through clients. It is possible to get to a client object
from a resource, but not vice versa.

Use `get_bucket(...).meta.client` when we need direct access to the
client object for more complex API calls; this lets all of the
configuration for how to access S3 to sit within `get_bucket`. Client
objects are not bound to only one bucket, but we get to them based on
the bucket we will be interacting with, for clarity.

We removed the cached session object, as it serves no real purpose.

Given that most of the use cases for realms-only code path would
really like to upload audit logs too, and the others would likely
produce a better user experience if they upoaded audit logs, we
should just have a single main code path here i.e.
'send_analytics_to_push_bouncer'.

We still only upload usage statistics according to documented
option, and only from the analytics cron job.

The error handling takes place in 'send_analytics_to_push_bouncer'
itself.

2. Avoid breaking RemoteRealm syncing, due to duplicate registrations

Mateusz Mandera ec7245d4e1 remote_billing: Add redirect flow for users with expired session.
Implements a nice redirect flow to give a good UX for users attempting
to access a remote billing page with an expired RemoteRealm session e.g.
/realm/some-uuid/sponsorship - perhaps through their browser
history or just their session expired while they were doing things in
this billing system.

The logic has a few pieces:
1. get_remote_realm_from_session, if the user doesn't have a
   identity_dict will raise RemoteBillingAuthenticationError.
2. If the user has an identity_dict, but it's expired, then
   get_identity_dict_from_session inside of get_remote_realm_from_session
   will raise RemoteBillingIdentityExpiredError.
3. The decorator authenticated_remote_realm_management_endpoint
   catches that exception and uses some general logic, described in more
   detail in the comments in the code, to figure out the right URL to
   redirect them to. Something like:
   https://theirserver.example.com/self-hosted-billing/?next_page=...
   where the next_page param is determined based on parsing request.path
   to see what kind of endpoint they're trying to access.
4. The remote_server_billing_entry endpoint is tweaked to also send
   its uri scheme to the bouncer, so that the bouncer can know whether
   to do the redirect on http or https.

Mateusz Mandera 7f33d6f0ea zilencer: Tie RemotePushDeviceToken to RemoteRealm at registration.
This consists of the following pieces:
1. Makes servers using the bouncer send realm_uuid in requests for token
   registration. (Sidenote: realm_uuid is already sent in the "send
   notification" codepath as of
   48db4bf854)
2. This allows the bouncer to tie RemotePushDeviceToken to the
   RemoteRealm with matching realm_uuid at registration time.
3. Introduce handling of some potential weird edge cases around the
   realm_uuid and RemoteRealm objects in get_remote_realm_helper.

Alex Vandiver b363999d19 analytics: Slew record reporting by up to 10 minutes.
This reduces the giant load spike at 5 minute past the hour, when all
remote servers currently attempt to submit their records.

We do not wish to slew over a full hour, because we want to ensure
that we do not hold the lock when the next hour's analytics runs. It
is also not necessary to have that much variation; 10 minutes is
picked as an arbitrary "long enough" time to spread requests over.

Sahil Batra d4fb244d2d CVE-2023-47642: Invalid metadata access for formerly subscribed streams.
It was discovered by the Zulip development team that active users who
had previously been subscribed to a stream incorrectly continued being
able to use the Zulip API to access metadata for that stream. As a
result, users who had been removed from a stream, but still had an
account in the organization, could still view metadata for that
stream (including the stream name, description, settings, and an email
address used to send emails into the stream via the incoming email
integration). This potentially allowed users to see changes to a
stream’s metadata after they had lost access to the stream.

This bug was present in all Zulip releases prior to today's Zulip
Server 7.5.

Sahil Batra 432001656e streams: Remove "email_address" field from Subscription objects.
This commit removes "email_address" field from Subscription objects
and we would instead a new endpoint in next commit to get email
address for stream with proper access check.

This change also fixes the bug where we would include email address
for the unsubscribed private stream as well when user did not have
permission to send message to the stream, and having email allowed
the unsubscribed user to send message to the stream.

Note that the unsubscribed user can still send message to the stream
if the user had noted down the email before being unsubscribed
and the stream token is not changed after unsubscribing the user.

Alex Vandiver 091e2f177b linkifiers: Match JS implementation to server implementation.
Since the server-side implementation no longer uses look-ahead
or (more importantly) look-behind, it is possible to exactly implement
in Javascript. This removes a common class which would prevent local
echo.

This requires reworking the topic linking algorithm, to march the
server's as well. The tests and behaviour are adjusted in so doing --
previously, the JS implementation would have linked `#foo` with a
`foo` regex on the linkifier, but the server implementation would not
have.

Mateusz Mandera 8a6d5b4997 counts: Add new Add new mobile_pushes_sent::day LoggingCountStat.
This is a CountStat for tracking how many mobile notifications the
server requested.
1. On a self-hosted server, that means requesting from the push bouncer.
2. On a server that's its own push bouncer, that's just the number
   directly sent.

This number has room for inaccuracy due to incrementing by the number of
user devices on a self-hosted server, as it doesn't account for errors
that may occur in the GCM/APNs low-level sending codepaths on the bouncer.

Also tests that a server that's its own push bouncer correctly
increments its mobile_pushes_sent::day CountStat, by basing it on the
values returned from the send_apple/android_push_notification functions
which tell us the actual number of successfully sent notifications.

Since the return values of send_..._push_notification are now
used in those codepaths, we need to tweak our mocks in some unrelated
tests to set up some return value to avoid errors.

We now send "realm_user/update" (and "realm_bot/update" for bots)

We would want to use "remove" event for a user losing access

in the user objects and the clients still have the data for

This commit adds two user settings, named
* `automatically_follow_topics_policy`
* `automatically_unmute_topics_in_muted_streams_policy`

The settings control the user's preference on which topics they
will automatically 'follow' or 'unmute in muted streams'.

The policies offer four options:
1. Topics I participate in
2. Topics I send a message to
3. Topics I start
4. Never (default)

Earlier, when we used 'self.send_message()' in the backend tests,
the sent message was not marked as read for the sender.

Reason: To set the read flag, we have to check if
'message.sent_by_human()'. It returns False because the
'sending_client' for tests is "test suite" and the 'sent_by_human'
function doesn't enlist the "test suite" client name as a human client.

Tim Abbott c6fe799369 i18n: Fix default language for users created via API/LDAP.
This fixes a regression introduced in
9954db4b59, where the realm's default
language would be ignored for users created via API/LDAP/SAML,
resulting in all such users having English as their default language.

The API/LDAP/SAML account creation code paths don't have a request,
and thus cannot pull default language from the user's browser.

We have the `realm.default_language` field intended for this use case,
but it was not being passed through the system.

Rather than pass `realm.default_language` through from each caller, we
make the low-level user creation code set this field, as that seems
more robust to the creation of future callers.

Alex Vandiver 723a4c2fff push_notifications: Send timestamp with only second granularity.

client on Android parses this field using:

deployed b8581e2895.

Also, 'unread_msgs.count' takes into account the unreads in unmuted
or followed topics in muted streams too.

Hemant Umre be653dd5b4 org_settings: Add backend for `realm_jitsi_server_url` setting.
This commit adds a `jitsi_server_url` field to the Realm model, which
will be used to save the URL of the custom Jitsi Meet server. In
the database, `None` will encode the server-level default. We can't
readily use `None` in the API, as it could be confused with "field not
sent". Therefore, we will use the string "default" for this purpose.

We have also introduced `server_jitsi_server_url` in the `/register`
API. This will be used to display the server's default Jitsi server
URL in the settings UI.

The existing `jitsi_server_url` will now be calculated as
`realm_jitsi_server_url || server_jitsi_server_url`.

Alex Vandiver 11a1cb9630 narrow: Skip the realm_id limit on joins across to usermessage.
The unique index on `(user_id, message_id)` that is the
`zerver_usermessage` table is rather specific, and even the PostgreSQL
extended statistics are not enough for it to realize there is a
correlation between the `realm_id` in the message table and the
`user_id` in the usermessage table. This means that adding the
`realm_id` limit when there is a join to `zerver_usermessage` flips
the query plan from a nested loop of unique usermessage index-only
scan, with an index scan of the messages pkey -- to a parallel hash
join of the messages limit with a index scan of just the user_id limit
on usermessages. It thinks this is necessary because it thinks that
the `realm_id` limit may remove a large number of messages from the
usermessage set -- which is totally untrue.

Remove the `realm_id` limit if we have a usermessage join.

This endpoint verifies that the services that Zulip needs to function
are running, and Django can talk to them. It is designed to be used

limits access to only localhost and the IP addresses of configured
reverse proxies.

Tests are limited because we cannot stop running services (which would
impact other concurrent tests) and there would be extremely limited
utility to mocking the very specific methods we're calling to raising

Steve Howell a8f5836ee6 tests: Make soft-reactivation tests readable.
The `expected` flag was incredibly confusing, as you
couldn't tell from the calling code what you were
actually expecting to happen.

I avoid the context manager idiom in order to force
the callers to create simple helper functions, and
I de-duplicate some code in some places.

I also force the caller to explicitly soft-deactivate
the user with one simple line of code, so that the
person reading the test doesn't have to research
the side effects of the helper. (And I make it
very easy for new authors to follow the practice
going forward.)

The get_user function is poorly named, but I don't want to

It's also nice to have a test wrapper for little experiments
like profiling tests or hunting down calls to refresh_from_db.

It's possible that we would also just change the new wrapper

code to just bypass the cache.

Lauryn Menard 31daef7f79 response: Remove "result: partially_completed" for success responses.
In feature levels 153 and 154, a new value of "partially_completed"
for `result` in a success (HTTP status code 200) was added for two
endpoints that process messages in batches: /api/delete-topic and
/api/mark-all-as-read.

Prior to these changes, `result` was either "success" or "error" for
all responses, which was a useful API invariant to have for clients.

So, here we remove "partially_completed" as a potential value for
"result" in a response. And instead, for the two endpoints noted
above, we return a boolean field "complete" to indicate if the
response successfully deleted/marked as read all the targeted
messages (complete: true) or if only some of the targeted messages
were processed (complete: false).

The "code" field for an error string that was also returned as part
of a partially completed response is removed in these changes as
well.

The web app does not currently use the /api/mark-all-as-read
endpoint, but it does use the /api/delete-topic endpoint, so these
changes update that to check the `complete` boolean instead of the
string value for `result`.

Alex Vandiver b555d3f553 digest: Cache per-stream recent topics, rather than batching.
The query plan for fetching recent messages from the arbitrary set of
streams formed by the intersection of 30 random users can be quite
bad, and can descend into a sequential scan on `zerver_recipient`.
Worse, this work of pulling recent messages out is redone if the
stream appears in the next batch of 30 users.

Instead, pull the recent messages for a stream on a one-by-one basis,
but cache them in an in-memory cache. Since digests are enqueued in
30-user batches but still one-realm-at-a-time, work will be saved both
in terms of faster query plans whose results can also be reused across
batches.

This requires that we pull the stream-id to stream-name mapping for
_all_ streams in the realm at once, but that is well-indexed and
unlikely to cause performance issues -- in fact, it may be faster
than pulling a random subset of the streams in the realm.

Adrián Oliva 732ad89f3d markdown: Fix URL link topic skipping query.
When searching for links inside a topic name, the question mark (?)
was used to split the topic. If a URL had a query after the URL
(e.g., "?foo=bar"), then the query was trimmed from the URL.

Removing the question mark from `basic_link_splitter` is sufficient
to fix this issue. The `get_web_link_regex` function then removes
the trailing punctuation if any, including literal question marks.

N-Shar-ma 8c91c91d86 widgets: Fix bug where a new line right after /todo broke rendering.
When there was no space right after `/todo` but there was content on a
new line, the message would be rendered plainly, not as a todo widget.
This was because we split on only the space character to then check if
the first token was a valid widget.

Now we split on both spaces and newlines to extract the widget name,
irrespective of whether it is followed by a space or a newline. This
results in the message being rendered as a todo widget as expected.

Zixuan James Li c336bf0398 api: Avoid programming errors due to nested Annotated types.
We want to reject ambiguous type annotations that set ApiParamConfig
inside a Union. If a parameter is Optional and has a default of None, we
prefer Annotated[Optional[T], ...] over Optional[Annotated[T, ...]].

This implements a check that detects Optional[Annotated[T, ...]] and
raise an assertion error if ApiParamConfig is in the annotation. It also
checks if the type annotation contains any ApiParamConfig objects that
are ignored, which can happen if the Annotated type is nested inside
another type like List, Union, etc.

Note that because
param: Annotated[Optional[T], ...] = None
and
param: Optional[Annotated[Optional[T], ...]] = None
are equivalent in runtime prior to Python 3.11, there is no way for us
to distinguish the two. So we cannot detect that in runtime.

Zixuan James Li f4caf9dd79 api: Add new typed_endpoint decorators.
The goal of typed_endpoint is to replicate most features supported by
has_request_variables, and to improve on top of it. There are some
unresolved issues that we don't plan to work on currently. For example,
typed_endpoint does not support ignored_parameters_supported for 400
responses, and it does not run validators on path-only arguments.

Unlike has_request_variables, typed_endpoint supports error handling by
processing validation errors from Pydantic.

Most features supported by has_request_variables are supported by
typed_endpoint in various ways.

To define a function, use a syntax like this with Annotated if there is
any metadata you want to associate with a parameter, do note that
parameters that are not keyword-only are ignored from the request:
```
@typed_endpoint
def view(
    request: HttpRequest,
    user_profile: UserProfile,
    *,
    foo: Annotated[int, ApiParamConfig(path_only=True)],
    bar: Json[int],
    other: Annotated[
        Json[int],
        ApiParamConfig(
            whence="lorem",
            documentation_status=NTENTIONALLY_UNDOCUMENTED
        )
    ] = 10,
) -> HttpResponse:
    ....
```

There are also some shorthands for the commonly used annotated types,
which are encouraged when applicable for better readability and less
typing:
```
WebhookPayload = Annotated[Json[T], ApiParamConfig(argument_type_is_body=True)]
PathOnly = Annotated[T, ApiParamConfig(path_only=True)]
```

Then the view function above can be rewritten as:
```
@typed_endpoint
def view(
    request: HttpRequest,
    user_profile: UserProfile,
    *,
    foo: PathOnly[int],
    bar: Json[int],
    other: Annotated[
        Json[int],
        ApiParamConfig(
            whence="lorem",
            documentation_status=INTENTIONALLY_UNDOCUMENTED
        )
    ] = 10,
) -> HttpResponse:
    ....
```

There are some intentional restrictions:
- A single parameter cannot have more than one ApiParamConfig
- Path-only parameters cannot have default values
- argument_type_is_body is incompatible with whence
- Arguments of name "request", "user_profile", "args", and "kwargs" and
  etc. are ignored by typed_endpoint.
- positional-only arguments are not supported by typed_endpoint. Only
  keyword-only parameters are expected to be parsed from the request.
- Pydantic's strict mode is always enabled, because we don't want to
  coerce input parsed from JSON into other types unnecessarily.
- Using strict mode all the time also means that we should always use
  Json[int] instead of int, because it is only possible for the request
  to have data of type str, and a type annotation of int will always
  reject such data.

typed_endpoint's handling of ignored_parameters_unsupported is mostly
identical to that of has_request_variables.

_default_manager is the same as objects on most of our models. But
when a model class is stored in a variable, the type system doesn’t
know which model the variable is referring to, so it can’t know that
objects even exists (Django doesn’t add it if the user added a custom
manager of a different name). django-stubs used to incorrectly assume
it exists unconditionally, but it no longer does.

Mateusz Mandera f3a3047484 bulk_access_messages_expect_usermessage: Fix function name and comments.
The name and docstring were just wrong, having a UserMessage row isn't
sufficient for having message access and is actually only relevant in a
private stream with private history. The function is only used in a

The comment mentioning this function in handle_remove_push_notification

say why we're not checking message access.

Mateusz Mandera c908b518ef CVE-2023-32678: Prevent unauthorized editing/deletion in priv streams.
Users who used to be subscribed to a private stream and have been
removed from it since retain the ability to edit messages/topics, and
delete messages that they used to have access to, if other relevant
organization permissions allow these actions. For example, a user may be
able to edit or delete their old messages they posted in such a private
stream. An administrator will be able to delete old messages (that they
had access to) from the private stream.

We fix this by fixing the logic in has_message_access (which lies at the
core of our message access checks - access_message() and
bulk_access_messages())
to not rely on only a UserMessage row for checking access but also
verify stream type and subscription status.

Zixuan James Li a081428ad2 user_groups: Make locks required for updating user group memberships.
**Background**

User groups are expected to comply with the DAG constraint for the
many-to-many inter-group membership. The check for this constraint has
to be performed recursively so that we can find all direct and indirect
subgroups of the user group to be added.

This kind of check is vulnerable to phantom reads which is possible at
the default read committed isolation level because we cannot guarantee
that the check is still valid when we are adding the subgroups to the
user group.

**Solution**

To avoid having another transaction concurrently update one of the
to-be-subgroup after the recursive check is done, and before the subgroup
is added, we use SELECT FOR UPDATE to lock the user group rows.

The lock needs to be acquired before a group membership change is about
to occur before any check has been conducted.

Suppose that we are adding subgroup B to supergroup A, the locking protocol
is specified as follows:

1. Acquire a lock for B and all its direct and indirect subgroups.
2. Acquire a lock for A.

For the removal of user groups, we acquire a lock for the user group to
be removed with all its direct and indirect subgroups. This is the special
case A=B, which is still complaint with the protocol.

**Error handling**

We currently rely on Postgres' deadlock detection to abort transactions
and show an error for the users. In the future, we might need some
recovery mechanism or at least better error handling.

**Notes**

An important note is that we need to reuse the recursive CTE query that
finds the direct and indirect subgroups when applying the lock on the
rows. And the lock needs to be acquired the same way for the addition and
removal of direct subgroups.

User membership change (as opposed to user group membership) is not
affected. Read-only queries aren't either. The locks only protect
critical regions where the user group dependency graph might violate
the DAG constraint, where users are not participating.

**Testing**

We implement a transaction test case targeting some typical scenarios
when an internal server error is expected to happen (this means that the
user group view makes the correct decision to abort the transaction when
something goes wrong with locks).

To achieve this, we add a development view intended only for unit tests.
It has a global BARRIER that can be shared across threads, so that we
can synchronize them to consistently reproduce certain potential race
conditions prevented by the database locks.

The transaction test case lanuches pairs of threads initiating possibly
conflicting requests at the same time. The tests are set up such that exactly N
of them are expected to succeed with a certain error message (while we don't
know each one).

**Security notes**

get_recursive_subgroups_for_groups will no longer fetch user groups from
other realms. As a result, trying to add/remove a subgroup from another
realm results in a UserGroup not found error response.

We also implement subgroup-specific checks in has_user_group_access to
keep permission managing in a single place. Do note that the API
currently don't have a way to violate that check because we are only
checking the realm ID now.

Zixuan James Li 30495cec58 migration: Rename extra_data_json to extra_data in audit log models.
This migration applies under the assumption that extra_data_json has
been populated for all existing and coming audit log entries.

- This removes the manual conversions back and forth for extra_data
throughout the codebase including the orjson.loads(), orjson.dumps(),
and str() calls.

- The custom handler used for converting Decimal is removed since
DjangoJSONEncoder handles that for extra_data.

- We remove None-checks for extra_data because it is now no longer
nullable.

- Meanwhile, we want the bouncer to support processing RealmAuditLog entries for
remote servers before and after the JSONField migration on extra_data.

- Since now extra_data should always be a dict for the newer remote
server, which is now migrated, the test cases are updated to create
RealmAuditLog objects by passing a dict for extra_data before
sending over the analytics data. Note that while JSONField allows for
non-dict values, a proper remote server always passes a dict for
extra_data.

- We still test out the legacy extra_data format because not all
remote servers have migrated to use JSONField extra_data.
This verifies that support for extra_data being a string or None has not
been dropped.

Prakhar Pratyush 379a08eb1e message_send: Fix wildcard_mentioned flag unset for few participants.
For topic wildcard mentions, the 'wildcard_mentioned' flag is set
for those user messages having 'user_profile_id' in
'topic_participant_user_ids', i.e. all topic participants.

Earlier, the flag was set if the 'user_profile_id' exists in
'all_topic_wildcard_mention_user_ids'.
'all_topic_wildcard_mention_user_ids' contains the ids of those
users who are topic participants and have enabled notifications
for '@topic' mentions.

The earlier approach was incorrect, as it would set the
'wildcard_mentioned' flag only for those topic participants
who have enabled the notifications for '@topic' mention instead
of setting the flag for all the topic participants.

The bug was introduced in 4c9d26c.

Akshat baede93f69 narrow: Fix topic highlighting issue with apostrophes in search results.
This commit addresses the issue where the topic highlighting
in search results was offset by one character when an
apostrophe was present. The problem stemmed from the disparity
in HTML escaping generated by the function `func.escape_html` which
is used to obtain `topic_matches` differs from the escaping performed
by the function `django.utils.html.escape` for apostrophes (').

func.escape_html | django.utils.html.escape
-----------------+--------------------------
      '      |           '

To fix this SQL query is changed to return the HTML-escaped
topic name generated by the function `func.escape_html`.

Steve Howell 51db22c86c per-request caches: Add per_request_cache library.
We have historically cached two types of values
on a per-request basis inside of memory:

    * linkifiers
    * display recipients

Both of these caches were hand-written, and they
both actually cache values that are also in memcached,
so the per-request cache essentially only saves us
from a few memcached hits.

I think the linkifier per-request cache is a necessary
evil. It's an important part of message rendering, and
it's not super easy to structure the code to just get
a single value up front and pass it down the stack.

I'm not so sure we even need the display recipient
per-request cache any more, as we are generally pretty
smart now about hydrating recipient data in terms of
how the code is organized. But I haven't done thorough
research on that hypotheseis.

Fortunately, it's not rocket science to just write
a glorified memoize decorator and tie it into key
places in the code:

    * middleware
    * tests (e.g. asserting db counts)
    * queue processors

That's what I did in this commit.

This commit definitely reduces the amount of code
to maintain. I think it also gets us closer to
possibly phasing out this whole technique, but that
effort is beyond the scope of this PR. We could
add some instrumentation to the decorator to see
how often we get a non-trivial number of saved
round trips to memcached.

Note that when we flush linkifiers, we just use
a big hammer and flush the entire per-request
cache for linkifiers, since there is only ever
one realm in the cache.

Steve Howell 1b7880fc21 push notifications: Go to the DB for streams.
We want to phase out the use of get_display_recipient
for streams, and this is the last place that I
eliminate it. The next commit will eliminate the
dead code and make mypy types tighter.

This change will make push notifications slightly
slower in some situations, but we avoid all the
complexity of a cache, and this code tends to run
offline.

We could always make this code a bit more efficient
by being a little smarter about what data we fetch
up front. For example, get_apns_alert_title gets
called by a function that already has the stream
name. It's just a bit of a pain to refactor when
you have all the DM codepath mucked up with the
stream codepath.
