Riken Shah f95c539122 custom_check: Avoid use of assert to avoid confusion with assert.equal.
This commit bans the use of `assert` and replaces it
with `assert.ok` to avoid confusion with `assert.equal`.

Steve Howell 855ac26c48 compose fade: Extract compose_fade_users class.
We extract compose_fade_users and compose_fade_helper.

This is a pretty verbatim extraction of code, apart from adding a few
exports and changing the callers.

This change makes the buddy_data module no longer sit "above" these
files in the dependency graph (at least not via compose_fade):

    * jquery
    * lodash (not a big deal)
    * compose_state
    * floating_recipient_bar
    * message_viewport
    * rows

The new moules have dependencies that buddy_data already
had directly for other reasons:

    * people
    * util

And then buddy_data still depends on stream_data indirectly through
the compose-fade logic for stream_data. Even without compose-fade, it
would depend indirectly on stream_data via hash_util.

Note that we could have lifted the calls to compose_fade out of
buddy_data to move some dependencies around, but it's useful to have
buddy_data fully encapsulate what goes into the buddy list without
spreading responsibilities to things like activity.js and
buddy_list.js. We can now unit-test the logic at the level of
buddy_data, which is a lot easier than trying to do it via modules
that delegate drawing or do drawing (such as activity.js and
buddy_list.js).

Note that we still don't have 100% line coverage on the
compose_fade.js module, but all the code that we extracted now is
covered, mostly via buddy_data tests.

Steve Howell 355f44ef13 refactor: Only pass stream_id for set_subscribers.
The goal here is to make all our peer_data functions
basically work in id space. Passing a full `sub`
to these functions is a legacy of when subscriber
info was attached to a full stream "sub" object,
but we don't care about anything sub-related
(color, description, name, etc.) when we are
dealing with subscriptions.

When callers pass in stream_id, you can be more
confident in a quick skim of the code that we're
not mutating anything in the "sub".

Steve Howell 6cc880c858 refactor: Extract peer_data.js.
This de-clutters stream_data a bit.  Since our
peer data is our biggest performance concern,
I want to contain any optimizations to a fairly
well-focused module.

The name `peer_data` is a bit of a compromise,
since we already have `subs.js` and we use
`sub` as a variable name for stream records
throughout our code, but it's consistent with
our event nomenclature (peer/add, peer/remove)
and it's short while still being fairly easy
to find with grep.

Anders Kaseorg d72423ef21 eslint: Replace empty-returns with consistent-return.
Instead of prohibiting ‘return undefined’ (#8669), we require that a

sahil839 40475a41b0 compose_fade: Change would_receive_message to use user_id.
This commit changes the would_receive_message to use user_id
instead of emails.

This change is done because user_ids are immutable and using
user_ids is the correct way of uniquely identifying user.

The change in 'would_receive_message' also leads to change
in util.is_pm_recipient to use a string of user_ids instead
of emails.

We also know that user_ids passed to 'would_receive_message'
are active user_ids, since we get them from buddy_list.
So we don't need to check whether the user is active, which
was previously being checked by get_active_user_for_email.

Steve Howell f0c99b42ec Rename people.add_in_realm to people.add().
We had this API:

    people.add_in_realm = full-fledged user
    people.add = not necessarily in realm

Now the API is this:

    people.add = full-fledged user
    people._add_user = internal API for cross-realm bots
        and deactivated users

I think in most of our tests the distinction between
people.add() and people.add_in_realm() was just an
accident of history and didn't reflect any real intention.

And if I had to guess the intention in 99% of the cases,
folks probably thought they were just creating ordinary,
active users in the current realm.

In places where the distinction was obviously important
(because a test failed), I deactivated the user via
`people.deactivate`.

For the 'basics' test in the people test suite, I clean
up the test setup for Isaac. Before this commit I was
adding him first as a non-realm user then as a full-fledged
user, but this was contrived and confusing, and we
didn't really need it for test coverage purposes.

Steve Howell b994889315 node tests: Just set i18n every time.

Steve Howell 39405fccdc util: Prepare to remove get_message_topic().
I am not quite ready to declare victory on
the subject/topic migration, but we are super
close. In this commit I bump a blueslip
warning to a blueslip error, so that we'll
be notified of any codepath that is still
using the janky fall-back-to-subject defensive
code here.

If we go a couple days without any errors, then
we can remove the blueslip warning and the
defensive code immediately and then inline
the callers at our leisure. I wouldn't be
wildly against keeping these wrappers in some
parts of the code, but that debate is out of
the scope of this immediate fix, and I haven't
thought hard about it yet.

We can basically sweep set_message_topic() now,
if we wanted to, since it's truly just a one-liner.
(At one point it was encapsulating something
like `message.subject = foo`).

This required a tiny change to compose_fade
test setup.

Steve Howell 9ab07d1038 util.js: Remove util from window.
We now treat util like a leaf module and
use "require" to import it everywhere it's used.

An earlier version of this commit moved
util into our "shared" library, but we
decided to wait on that. Once we're ready
to do that, we should only need to do a
simple search/replace on various
require/zrequire statements plus a small
tweak to one of the custom linter checks.

It turns out we don't really need util.js
for our most immediate code-sharing goal,
which is to reuse our markdown code on
mobile. There's a little bit of cleanup
still remaining to break the dependency,
but it's minor.

The util module still calls the global
blueslip module in one place, but that
code is about to be removed in the next
few commits.

I am pretty confident that once we start
sharing things like the typeahead code
more aggressively, we'll start having
dependencies on util. The module is barely
more than 300 lines long, so we'll probably
just move the whole thing into shared
rather than break it apart. Also, we
can continue to nibble away at the
cruftier parts of the module.

Ryan Rehman 174b2abcfd settings: Migrate to stream_post_policy structure.
This commit includes a new `stream_post_policy` setting,
by replacing the `is_announcement_only` field from the Stream model,
which is done by mirroring the structure of the existing
`create_stream_policy`.

It includes the necessary schema and database migrations to migrate
the is_announcement_only boolean field to stream_post_policy,
a smallPositiveInteger field similar to many other settings.

This change is done to allow organization administrators to restrict
new members from creating and posting to a stream. However, this does
not affect admins who are new members.

With many tweaks by tabbott to documentation under /help, etc.

Fixes #13616.

Anders Kaseorg 28f3dfa284 js: Automatically convert var to let and const in most files.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

This run_test helper sets up a convention that allows

YJDave 2cbfcbb740 subscription: Fix unexpected blueslip warnings on add subscriber.
In stream settings, if user add subscriber to unsubscribed public
stream from `Add` input widget it gives lots of blueslip warnings,
cause user isn't subscribed to public stream.

Fix this by changing condition to `sub.can_access_subscriber` from
`sub.subscribed` in blueslip warning, cause user can access
subscribers in such cases even if not subscribed to stream.

Steve Howell 4d0d18ba14 Use stream_id in recipient comparisons.
Using stream_id in recipient comparisons fixes a
bug in this scenario: go to home view, send message
to stream, wait for admin to rename stream, send
another message to the stream. Before this change,
the stream name would live-update but you'd get a
spurious recipient bar due to the prior message still
having the old stream name in places internally.

There were other ways to fix the live-update glitch,
but it's just generally cleaner to do stream id
comparisons.

Part of this change is to add stream_id to
compose_fade.set_focused_recipient().
