Steve Howell 72e0f2e901 bots: Lift render_bots calls to dispatcher code.
This is mostly a refactoring to break the unnecessary
dependency of bot_data on settings_bots.

This is a bit more than a refactoring, as I remove all
the debounced calls to render bots during the
initialization of bot_data. (The debouncing probably
meant we only rendered once, but it was still needless
work.)

We don't need to explicitly render bots during
bot_data.initialize(), which you can verify by loading
"#settings/your-bots" as the home page. It was just an
artifact of how add() was implemented.

Note that for the **admin** screen, we did not and
still do not do live updates for add/remove; we only do
it for updates. Fixing that is out of the scope of this
change. The code that was moved here affects
**personal** bot settings.

Note that the debounce code is quite fragile. See my
code comment that explains it. I don't have time to go
down the rabbit hole of a deep fix here. The puppeteer
tests would fail without the debounce, even though I
was able to eliminate the debounce in an earlier
version of this fix and see good results during manual
testing. (My testing may have just been on the "lucky"
side of the race.) I created #17743 to address this
problem.

Aman Agrawal e587c029f6 display_settings: Allow user to set default_view.
TextField is used to allow users to set long stream + topic narrow
names in the urls.

We currently restrict users to only set "all_messages" and
"recent_topics" as narrows.

This commit achieves 3 things:
* Removes recent topics as the default view which loads when
  hash is empty.
* Loads default_view when hash is empty.
* Loads default_view on pressing escape key when it is unhandled by
  other present UI elements.

NOTE: After this commit loading zulip with an empty hash will
automatically set hash to default_view. Ideally, we'd just display
the default view without a hash, but that involves extra complexity.

One exception is when user is trying to load an overlay directly,
i.e. zulip is loaded with an overlay hash. In this case,
we render recent topics is background irrespective of default_view.

We consider this last detail to be a bug not important enough to block
adding this setting.

Steve Howell 6cc880c858 refactor: Extract peer_data.js.
This de-clutters stream_data a bit. Since our
peer data is our biggest performance concern,
I want to contain any optimizations to a fairly
well-focused module.

The name `peer_data` is a bit of a compromise,
since we already have `subs.js` and we use
`sub` as a variable name for stream records
throughout our code, but it's consistent with
our event nomenclature (peer/add, peer/remove)
and it's short while still being fairly easy
to find with grep.

ryanreh99 e5779c1ca0 message events: Refactor `reify_message_id` codepath.
The changes made in this commit are as follows:

* The `remove_messages` is moved to the `message_events.js`
  file from `ui.js`.

* We refactor `MessageListData.change_message_id` to no
longer require an `opts` parameter as this function
just returns whether we need to rerender or not.

The blueslip error block can be removed since we made
the change to no long defer the data updates in
  commit 3b5ba6b2c1,
this case can no longer occur.

Steve Howell 7ff3859136 subscriber events: Change schema for peer_add/peer_remove.
We now can send an implied matrix of user/stream tuples
for peer_add and peer_remove events.

The client code basically does this:

    for stream_id in event['stream_ids']:
        for user_id in event['user_ids']:
            update_sub(stream_id, user_id)

We used to send individual events, which gets real
expensive when you are creating new streams. For
the case of copy-to-stream case, we should see
events go from U to 1, where U is the number of users
added.

Note that we don't yet fully optimize the potential
of this schema. For adding a new user with lots
of default streams, we still send S peer_add events.

And if you subscribe a bunch of users to a bunch of
private streams, we only go from U * S to S; we can't
optimize it down to one event easily.

Steve Howell 0eb206f97e mobile sharing: Make emoji.js a shared ES6 module.
This is a pretty straightforward conversion.

The bulk of the diff is just changing emoji.js
to ES6 syntax.

to the next commit--we are now set up to have
markdown.js require emoji.js directly, since
it is no longer on `window`.

Steve Howell aedf1660f8 dispatch tests: Make realm_emoji test more robust.
The main thing here is that we check that the
actual data got put into our data structures.

(In general we want to move away from stubbing
data modules; any place where we stub data modules
is a relic of earlier days, where we were just
trying to set the bar for 100% line coverage,
even though some of the original coverage was
quite shallow.)

I also use real stubs instead of noops for
the calls out to UI-oriented modules.

In passing I tweak some comments in the actual
dispatch code.

Steve Howell 69c082e2f6 refactor: Have emoji_picker pull from emoji.
This makes it so that the authoritative holder
of all emoji data is emoji.js, and all our
UI components that need emoji data consistently
pull data from emoji.js as needed.

Or to put it another way, we no longer need the
dispatch module to know that emoji_picker is
coupled to emoji precisely by the active_realm_emojis
data; it can now make fewer assumptions.

YashRE42 25765faf58 navbar: Live update sub_count.
Previously, the navbar sub count would not live update as users
subscribed or unsubscribed, this commit adds the relevant calls in
stream events.

It would have been better to just have a single call within
server_events_dispatch but it seems difficult due to the way of
mark_subscribed and mark_unsubscribed are structured.

stream_events.mark_unsubscribed conditionally calls
subs.update_settings_for_unsubscribed which calls
subs.rerender_subscriptions_settings and as such handles the update
for the subscriptions modal on its own. Hence, we simply rely on the
stream_data.update_calculated_fields to ensure the subscriber counts
are updated and make a call to
tab_bar.maybe_rerender_title_area_for_stream(sub).

stream_events.mark_subscribed is similar.

Steve Howell 00e60c0c91 events: Use stream_id for peer_add/peer_remove.
Two things were broken here:
    * we were using name(s) instead of id(s)
    * we were always sending lists that only
      had one element

Now we just send "stream_id" instead of "subscriptions".

If anything, we should start sending a list of users
instead of a list of streams. For example, see
the code below:

    if peer_user_ids:
        for new_user_id in new_user_ids:
            event = dict(type="subscription", op="peer_add",
                         stream_id=stream.id,
                         user_id=new_user_id)
            send_event(realm, event, peer_user_ids)

Note that this only affects the webapp, as mobile/ZT
don't use this.

This event will be used more now for guest users when moving

bulk which is a much better UX.

These are basically shims for some deeper refactorings.

I basically just try to make the code express the
problems more clearly:

    - use stream_name instead of sub

    - make it clear that add_subscriber needlessly
      requires a name
    - make it clear we have an unnecessary loop

I also fixed some phony data in the test.

Steve Howell b965766f87 refactor: Call compose_fade without triggers.
We are trying to phase out the trigger-event way
of telling modules to do something.

In this case we not only remove the indirection
of the event handler, but we also get to remove
`compose_fade` from the `ui_init` startup sequence.

This also has us update `compose_fade` outside
the loop, although that's only a theoretical
improvement, since I don't think `peer_add` events
every actually include multiple streams.

To make the dispatch tests a little flatter, I
added a one-line change to zjsunit to add
`make_stub` to `global`.

To manually test:
    * have Aaron reply to Denmark (keep compose box open)
    * have Iago add Hamlet to Denmark
    * have Hamlet unsubscribe

via `get_owned_bot_dicts`.

For realm_bot/add, we modified

delegate that job to `bot_data.js`.

Steve Howell f8913dc321 default streams: Remove complicated remove logic.
Now if a default stream gets deleted, we just
redraw the table. We always have a small number
of default streams, and the way that we were removing
rows without the actual consent of `list_render` was
really janky (and just a vestige of pre-list-render
code that never got fully ported).

This also makes us consistent with how we handle
added streams (i.e. just call
`update_default_streams_table`).

ASIDE:

Ideally we will update `list_render` at some point to
have an API for adding and removing elements. It does
allow you now to call `data()` to reset its data, but
for now we just build a new `list_render` object every
time.

Steve Howell f0c99b42ec Rename people.add_in_realm to people.add().
We had this API:

    people.add_in_realm = full-fledged user
people.add = not necessarily in realm

Now the API is this:

    people.add = full-fledged user
    people._add_user = internal API for cross-realm bots
        and deactivated users

I think in most of our tests the distinction between
people.add() and people.add_in_realm() was just an
accident of history and didn't reflect any real intention.

And if I had to guess the intention in 99% of the cases,
folks probably thought they were just creating ordinary,
active users in the current realm.

In places where the distinction was obviously important
(because a test failed), I deactivated the user via
`people.deactivate`.

For the 'basics' test in the people test suite, I clean
up the test setup for Isaac. Before this commit I was
adding him first as a non-realm user then as a full-fledged
user, but this was contrived and confusing, and we
didn't really need it for test coverage purposes.

Steve Howell 3cc6ff5480 templates: Cache translations.
For Manage Streams, when we render the subscriptions
template, a significant amount of time is taken
by the "t" helper.

Obviously for the first call, we expect "t" to be
somewhat expensive, but subsuquent calls should be
fast, but i18next seems to have some overhead.
Also, we can save a tiny bit of overhead (marking it
as a safe string) that comes from our helper.

As an aside, are we sure it's ok to mark translations
as safe strings?

To test before and after, use blueslip.timings before
and after this commit. When I tested with about 300
streams, the difference is pretty striking:

    without cache: 100ms
    with cache: 20ms

This is particularly interesting, since the subscriptions
templates have long strings for things like the SVG-based
checkmarks, but they're not really the bottleneck.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be a huge win
elsewhere. In some places we don't call "t", but of
course those might change in the future and benefit from
the cache. And in other places we have smart widgets
that avoid rendering all N objects at one (e.g. buddy
list and list_render).

So this might be too big a hammer to speed up one
screen (albeit a really slow one). It's possible
that we should simply move the i18n.t step **outside**
of certain templates to avoid doing them in a loop.

Steve Howell e804f39f0e performance: Avoid expensive call in stream_data.is_active.
Calling `set_filter_out_inactives` is expensive, since we
count up the number of subscribed streams, which iterates
through all your streams, creates a new list of subscribed
streams, then counts them.

In my dev setup, I created 700 streams, and this shaved
about 700ms off of the initial call to `build_stream_list`.

Anders Kaseorg 28f3dfa284 js: Automatically convert var to let and const in most files.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

Anders Kaseorg d17b577d0c js: Purge useless IIFEs.
With webpack, variables declared in each file are already file-local
(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are
no longer needed.

Wyatt Hoodes e64b5a2b88 data export: Fix success banner not clearing.
There was a bug where the success banner stuck
around even after the export completed. We now
nicely fade and remove the banner upon a successful

Pragati Agrawal 15ff8fb73f settings: Fix sort order display settings.
This fixes the mis-alphabetized `fluid_layout_width` at few places in
the codebase, along with that it also fixes sorting order of

This adds a setting to control Zulip's default behavior of sorting to
bottom and graying out inactive streams. The previous logic is still
the default "automatic", but this gives users more control. See the
models.py comment for details.

Harshit Bansal b553507412 subscriptions: Migrate notification setting defaults model.
This commit migrates the Subscription's notification fields from a
BooleanField to a NullBooleanField where a value of None means to
inherit the value from user's profile.

Also includes a migrations to set the corresponding settings to None
if they match the user profile's values. This migration helps us in
getting rid of the weird "Apply to all" widget that we offered on
subscription settings page.

The mobile apps can't handle None appearing as the stream-level
notification settings, so for backwards-compatibility we arrange to
only send True/False to the mobile apps by applying those defaults
server-side. We introduce a notification_settings_null value within a
client_capabilities structure that newer versions of the mobile apps
can use to request the new model.

This mobile compatibility code is pretty effectively tested by the
existing test_events tests for the subscriptions subsystem.

David Wood 272ed90685 settings: Create an explicit invite_to_stream_policy setting.
This commit creates a new organization setting that determines whether
a user can invite other users to streams. Previously this was linked
to the waiting period threshold, but this was both not documented and
overly limiting.

With significant tweaks by tabbott to change the database model to not
involve two threshhold fields, edit the tests, etc.

This requires follow-up work to make the create stream policy setting
work how this code implies it should.
