Previously we were using message.display_recipient everywhere, which
is actually pretty confusing.

This is a V1 of this feature. For now, the only way to expand is by narrowing
to the stream---future revisions may add a manual toggle if it is found to be
useful.

This appears to have been caused by our code for preventing the
viewport from being recentered if you move the pointer away from the
edge of the viewport from a position near the edge, which was being
run even when it was not triggered by a scroll event.

Before this commit, if you try to arrow around when the selected
message is outside the pointer threshold for recentering, you get a
big jump, even if you are arrowing towards the center of the viewport.

We have to be careful about timing here. If Tornado fails to load
existing queues on startup then all clients will reload at once. On
the other hand, if we don't reload immediately then the client won't
get any events until the reload. For now, I've opted for the
user-friendly approach, so we need to make sure that Tornado gets a
chance to dump and reload its queues correctly.

This was biting us before when the user would leave a narrow before a
get_old_messages call associated with it finished. Specifically,
search.maybe_highlight_message() would assume a message was in the
DOM when it wasn't any more.
We also have to hide the 'loading more messages' indicator when
reseting the 'load more' status because otherwise it wouldn't get
hidden like normal in the load_old_messages() continuation, causing a
load_more_messages() not to fire when re-entering a narrow.

Previously, if for some reason pointer updates were not returning from
the server, the client would resend its request every second, rather
than waiting for the previous request to fail before sending a new
one.

It's closer to a presence query than an update, and more importantly
this moves this out of Tornado -- previously Tornado was spending at
least 3ms per recipient on messages sent to the MIT realm fetching all
this data to return back to users. This should save around 100ms per
message sent to a popular stream the MIT realm -- but more
importantly, each such event is 100ms during which Tornado is not
processing other messages.

Now that Zev's message list branch is merged, there's no longer a
performance penalty for loading these old messages, and it improves
our narrowing performance to have them loaded.
This code is slightly different from the original commit

first element in the message list and the API for get_old_messages
have changed since then.

Our mobile apps (which don't support in_home_view filtering) will move
the pointer to a message that isn't actually in the home view, so we
need to accept that sort of input for now (and maybe in general --

If we have removed a stream from the home view, and our pointer

Right now the MIT realm has pretty bad UI lag with 1,200 messages loaded. We

The message timestamp is now always clickable, and the popover contains the

The interface is a little messy because so many of the inputs change
-- we need to better organize all these variables under centralized
'zfilt' and 'zhome' headings.

So here's the reproduction recipe:
(1) Find a narrow that doesn't have any messages since 4 days ago
(2) Directly visit that narrow in your browser (or wait for someone to
do a deploy and thus auto-reload)
(3) Wait until load_old_messages has been called at least once
(4) Un-narrow
(5) Scroll up, and notice that the 400 most recent messages are above
sets of older messages.
The cause is that the code in add_messages assumed that
selected_message_id was within the range of message already in the
home view. This is true in most cases where add_message is being
called, but it is not true in the case that the user was in a narrowed
view containing only very old messages (And thus selected_message_id
would be older than everything in the home view).
We can fix this by tracking persistent_message_id separately and using
that for the relevant test in add_messages.

If get_updates requests a message ID that is too old, Tornado will
return a 400, and currently the only way to start caring about newer
message IDs is to reload.

If you create a spinner in a hidden element and then show the
element, the spinner is placed differently than if you had created
the spinner while the element was visible. This commit makes it so
that we never create spinners while their parent is hidden.

whether you're subscribed.

It's possible for selected_message_id to not exist in zhome. For
instance, when you open the page to a narrowed URL, there is a race
between loading the narrowed messages and loading all your
messages. If the narrowed message request completes first, it will
update selected_message_id to your initial_pointer if the latter
happens to be among the narrowed messages. Even if it is not, you can
select a message by clicking on it before the zhome request finishes.
Then the old code would never add that selected_message_id to the
zhome table, so it wouldn't show up in the Home view or if you
re-narrowed.
I'm pretty sure there are still cases where the selected_message_id
might be outside the range of messages in zhome, in which case adding
to zhome might put old messages at the bottom. I observed this twice
on staging but was unable to reproduce it consistently.

Putting update_floating_recipient_bar in the old location caused it to
be called on every single keypress, which is unnecessarily
expensive. Instead, just call it once when we think we might actually
need it: after initiating a narrow.

There's this very edge-case issue which is: if you go to the top of
the page and narrow to something other than the top message, the
floating subject bar does not update.
Why? Well, the way that the narrowing code works is that it sets up
narrowing and then calls
select_message_by_id(target_id, {then_scroll: true});
so that our selected message is in the view.
This in turn calls select_message, which calls recenter_view as
appropriate. This usually causes a scroll action, which in turn causes
the floating recipient bar to be updated.
But when we're at the top of the page, recenter_view doesn't need
to scroll at all! So the bar remains un-updated. Here we explicitly
update it to guard against that case.
This fixes Trac #651.

And change the color to a more thematically appropriate blue.
The shadow pointer is sort of confusing; we should really provide some
different sort of indication that your pointer is potentially moving
on narrow-and-unnarrow. (I think my fade-in-fade-out later in this
commit series is a not-bad first crack at this.)

Alternatively the server could return a successful result with an empty list of
messages. But I prefer the solution in this commit, because it would allow us
in the future to warn the user about the problem. It does allow users to
determine if a given stream exists, but we haven't tried to hide that

We were submitting a 'last' value of -1 to the server at startup,
which is invalid but normally ended up being OK because the user
usually had no messages whatsoever or had last be updated via
get_old_messages before the get_updates call went through.

This was causing glitching where if you narrow so that zfilt has only
one message, and add messages on top (e.g. via get_old_messages), and
then add messages on bottom (e.g. by receiving one), we end up with
the bookend row missing. One can make this happen with narrowing,

The main problem with this code is that the error message doesn't go
away until you reload. To fix this, we need to add a noblock option
on get_updates.

The reproducer for the issue here is:
- Scroll to the top of your feed
- Click on a stream name
- Open a popover
- Click on a subject name
- Note that your old popover doesn't go away, and that you can open
a new one.
The problem was that when we narrow, we call jQuery.empty() on the
zfilt table. That not only removes nodes but also clears event
handlers and jquery data. Thus, even though we have a reference to
the old popover element in the ui module, the element has forgotten
it had a popover. When we call .popover("destroy") it actually
creates a new popover, but never shows it.

The problem seems to be caused by a bug in Firefox. We work around
the issue by adding empty table rows to the top of the table and
removing them when the user is idle.

Previously, we were adding those narrowed messages to message_dict the
first time, and thus totally skipping those messages each additional
time you tried to "load old messages" on that narrow.

This bug affected receiving messages while narrowed. When none of
the messages recieved matched the narrow predicate, we'd try to
render messages and then create a jQuery object out of a bunch of
newlines (the only thing that results from a render of 0 messages).

This greatly reduces the number of events generated and prevents the
blue flashing on message arrival.
This also necessitated a change in how we looked up message rows to
add the 'next_is_same_sender' class, which led to a further
optimization where we don't have to do as many jQuery selections by
