# Configure desktop notifications

You can configure your settings to receive desktop notifications for messages
sent while Zulip is offscreen.

1. Go to the [Notifications](/#settings/notifications)

    * If you want desktop notifications for each new message from a stream,
check the **Visual desktop notifications** option and/or **Audible desktop
notifications** under **Stream messages**.

    * If you want desktop notifications only for private messages and @-mentions,
check the **Visual desktop notifications** option and/or **Audible desktop
notifications** option under **Private messages and @-mentions**.
