This is done to decouple our message view related update events
from MessageListData as there are plans to create multiple
MessageListData objects. Instead we update the `stored_messages`
which tracks the complete data for all messages.
Prettier would do this anyway, but it’s separated out for a more

There is a bug and race issue that occurs when a message is selected
while we are in the process of reifying a locally echoed message,
raising the "Selected message id not in MessageList" error.
The code flow to get the exception is as follows:
* A user sends a message to the current narrow we are in.
* Before the new message event is received, we sent a message to
the same message list which renders it with a locally echoed id.
* One of the ways of getting the exception is to already have the
locally sent message selected, before receiving an acknowledgment
from the server.
* Thus the Message List Data's `selected_id` now points to the new
message id. The exception is raised on entering the `was_selected`
if block inside `message_list_view` which tries to re-select the
message.
Updating the `_rerender_message` code for this special case won't fix
the entire bug because, as mentioned above there are other ways of
getting the exception:
Ideally, after all our synchronous work (`echo.process_from_server`)
has completed we would expect the re-order and re-render work of the
`change_message_id` would occur first, due to the timer of the
setTimeout being set to 0.
However as evident from the race condition existing, this isn't always
the case. `change_message_id` function is responsible for 3 things:
updation, re-ordering and re-rendering.
The first one which is responsible for updating the message list's
local cache, occurs synchronously while for the latter two, they both
occur asynchronously.
Before the setTimeout which is responsible for the latter two actions,
is encountered the user might select the message by clicking or more
commonly by scrolling, which causes this message selection event to be
ahead of the setTimeout in the callback queue.
During this time frame, our race condition takes place.
And even though the message id is updated it's Message List is not
in the correct sort order, which leads to `closest_id` !== `id` in
`MessageList_select_id` being true and raising the exception.
Now, we only asynchronously call the re_render function, to guarantee
the data is always correct and UI updates should be done at the end.
Extended by tabbott to comment the setTimeout call.
Fixes#15346.
The reason for this change is that, this is where `Filter` and
actual tracking of what messages are contiguous lives. This
will be beneficial when we will to move to a model where we
cache `MessageListData` objects for a large number of views.
We now treat util like a leaf module and
use "require" to import it everywhere it's used.
An earlier version of this commit moved
util into our "shared" library, but we
decided to wait on that. Once we're ready
to do that, we should only need to do a
simple search/replace on various
require/zrequire statements plus a small
tweak to one of the custom linter checks.
It turns out we don't really need util.js
for our most immediate code-sharing goal,
which is to reuse our markdown code on
mobile. There's a little bit of cleanup
still remaining to break the dependency,
but it's minor.
The util module still calls the global
blueslip module in one place, but that
code is about to be removed in the next
few commits.
I am pretty confident that once we start
sharing things like the typeahead code
more aggressively, we'll start having
dependencies on util. The module is barely
more than 300 lines long, so we'll probably
just move the whole thing into shared
rather than break it apart. Also, we
can continue to nibble away at the
cruftier parts of the module.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

With webpack, variables declared in each file are already file-local
(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are
no longer needed.

This fixes the most core data structures inside of
muting.js. We still use stream names for incoming
data to set_muted_topics and outgoing data from
get_muted_topics.
This will make us more resilient to stream name changes.
Before, if you were logged on when a stream rename
occured, topics that were muted under that stream would
appear to be unmuted. (You could fix it with a reload,
but it can be jarring to have a bunch of unread messages
appear in your feed suddenly.)

This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.
It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.
However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.
So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.
My recent refactoring that split out MessageListData
introduced a nasty bug where we were putting muted
messages into the "All Messages" view even though
the underlying list was correctly filtering
them, so the symptoms were two-fold:
- muted messages cluttered up your feed
- replying to the message caused a traceback (since
it wasn't actually in the underlying data
structure)
This has to do with what MessageListData.add_messages()
was passing back to MessageList to orchestrate drawing
in MessageListView.
I think what happened here is I got this working kind
of sloppily but correctly for the non-muting case and
then got in the weeds of some other stuff. Not my
finest moment.
The actual correct code here is simple enough. We
triage top, interior, and bottom, and then the respective
methods that put the data into the data structure
return the filtered lists (i.e. not muted) and put them
into the info structure.

Before this change, the way to add messages had a lot
of ping-pong-ing between MessageList and MessageListData,
where first the data got triaged, but not actually
inserted into data structures, and then subsequent
calls would add the data and get filtered results.
Now we have a simple API for MessageListData.add_messages
that does all the data stuff up front. Having a fully
function MLD.add_messages not only makes the ML.add_messages
function about four lines shorter, it also sets us up
to easily build standalone MLD objects before making
the heavier ML objects.
Most of this was straightforward.
Most functions that were grabbed verbatim and whole from
the original class still have one-line wrappers.
Many functions are just-the-data versions of functions that
remain in MessageList: see add, append, prepend, remove as
examples. In a typical pattern the MessageList code becomes
super simple:
