Steve Howell f105c480b3 Calculate gravatar hashes on the webapp client.
This change prepares us to have the server send avatar_url
of None when somebody wants a gravatar avatar (as opposed
to a user-uploaded one).

Subsequent commits will change behavior on both the server
and client to have this happen. So this commit has no-op
code for now, but it will soon use the fallback-to-gravatar
logic.

Steve Howell aa61db9301 Change warn -> error in people.report_late_add().
This commit is easy to revert if we want to tone down errors
to warnings for the short term, while our codepath still does
proper handling for adding users when they come in messages.

Steve Howell 02a011d627 Add people.report_late_add().

Steve Howell 5271241b24 Read page_params.realm_non_active_users() at page load.
This change is the first step in making it so that we load
non-active users at page load time in the webapp.

Before this change, we would reactively handle deactivated
users when we saw them as senders in messages. Subsequent
changes will make it a warning if we see unknown senders
in messages.

Steve Howell df03e30d68 popovers: Fix is-active checks for popovers.
We were incorrectly reporting active bots as non-active in
popovers, and we had no test coverage for cross-realm bots.

We also rename the function to is_active_user_for_popover,
since the old name, realm_user_is_active_human_or_bot, suggested
the wrong semantics for cross-realm bots.

Last but not least, we only do a blueslip warning if a user id
is not found. When lookups fail, we are pretty confident that
the user is not active, so an error is overkill. We can change
that as part of issue #7120.

Steve Howell f8f4d9cb63 people.js: Rename realm_get -> get_active_user_for_email.

exported function.

Steve Howell 2699a6aac9 refactor: Extract people.is_valid_email_for_compose().
It's easier to unit test logic inside of people.js than compose.js.

We allow users to compose emails to any of our cross-realm bots.
Someday we may tighten up which cross-realm bots are valid targets,
since it's not necessarily the case that those bots do anything
useful when you send them messages.

Steve Howell 8cf5e05827 Rename realm_people_dict -> active_user_dict.
This dictionary includes bots, so the reference to
"people" in the name `realm_people_dict` was misleading.

We omit `realm` for brevity sake--it's usually the case
that folks implementing new features can safely ignore
cross-realm bots, and it's on our roadmap to move those
bots into the realm.

Steve Howell 646bd356a3 Rename get_realm_human_user_ids -> get_active_user_ids.
The function name `get_realm_human_user_ids` was a lie--it
includes active bots as well.

The only user of this function is `activity.js`, which wasn't
impacted by the misleading name, because we eventually filter
out bots in the `info_for` function.

It's possible that we actually want to include bots in the right
sidebar, since they can be difficult to discover in other parts
of the UI. Or, if we want to keep the right sidebar as all
human users, we may eventually want to make the logic to exclude
bots happen higher in the stack (but for real, this time).

Tim Abbott 11eba1173c popovers: Don't show bots as deactivated in user popovers.
Apparently this is a bug that slipped in when we started showing

we want them.

We had a theory that get_user_id() errors were often due to race

out we still get the blueslip errors, and now we don't get
meaningful tracebacks. This change makes it so that errors
get reported immediately again.

Steve Howell 8de72184e1 Fix avatar message display regression from 1.5 release.
In f75af94984 I added some
lines of code that made it so that live updates for avatar
urls would affect messages currently in the browser.

This change worked well when the live update actually happened,
but then the next time the user would reload, the avatar in
the message pane would regress back to showing the avatar urls
from the server (which could have caching issues of their own).

This fix removes a couple lines of code that had the intended
effect of making all of your messages from any given sender
show the same url (good) but which generally grabbed
the url from an old message (bad).

After this fix, we go back to having old messages possibly
showing the old avatar urls, but new messages will display the
new avatar.

(There are lots of moving parts in the avatar system, because
not only do browsers cache image urls, but our server caches
messages and recipient info, so there have been "fixes" to
avatars since this change that are valid fixes in their own
right but not directly relevant to this commit.)

We now trigger an event in user_events.js, and we dynamically

We have a few variations of functions that build lists of names
for huddles, which should be cleaned up eventually. They are
called at different times in the code path, so the different
functions, while doing mostly the same thing, start with different
data sources.

Steve Howell f75af94984 bug fix: Prefer person.avatar_url to message.avatar_url.
This change is a partial bug fix for avatar live updates.
It makes it so that we prefer the person.avatar_url to

we were ignoring it until now.

Steve Howell 1ae3feac3e Use blueslip.warn, not error, for unknown emails.
In people.emails_strings_to_user_ids_string, we just warn
for bad emails going forward.

Users can enter bad emails into the search location bar,
for example, and that causes us to compute a browser hash,
which in turn uses this function.

(It's possible that we should adjust the search code not
to compute hashes for narrowing when the narrow doesn't
make sense, but that could be a non-trivial fix.)
2017-01-19 14:54:50 -08:00
Steve Howell d757f840dd Make nicer slugs for "pm-with" narrows.
The slugs for PM-with narrows now have user ids in them, so they
are more resilient to email changes, and they have less escaping
characters and are generally prettier.

Examples:

    narrow/pm-with/3-cordelia
    narrow/pm-with/3,5-group

The part of the URL that is actionable is the comma-delimited
list of one or more userids.

When we decode the slugs, we only use the part before the dash; the
stuff after the dash is just for humans. If we don't see a number
before the dash, we fall back to the old decoding (which should only
matter during a transition period where folks may have old links).

For group PMS, we always say "group" after the dash. For single PMs,
we use the person's email userid, since it's usually fairly concise
and not noisy for a URL. We may tinker with this later.

Basically, the heart of this change is these two new methods:

    people.emails_to_slug
    people.slug_to_emails

And then we unify the encode codepath as follows:

    narrow.pm_with_uri ->
    hashchange.operators_to_hash ->
    hashchange.encode_operand ->
    people.emails_to_slug

The decode path didn't really require much modication in this commit,
other than to have hashchange.decode_operand call people.slug_to_emails
for the pm-with case.

When somebody changes their name, we will now update

to do this through a code path that was designed for
true presence updates, but it was also passing in an
empty array, instead of undefined, which caused it to
fail to invoke the intended part of the codepath to
redraw the buddy list.

Now we just call the new activity.redraw() function,
which does the right thing for the buddy list.

The group PM list was live-updating before this change,
and it continues to live-update as part of the new
activity.redraw() function.

We use a cleaner approach to setting up test data in echo.js to
allow us to remove the one call to test_set_people_name_dict().

Steve Howell 4cd39010d1 Add people.get_person_from_user_id().
This requires the introduction of people_by_user_id_dict
and changes to people.add() and people.remove().

Steve Howell 30e01306d9 Eliminate people.reify() and mostly ignore unknown users.
If I try to send a message to an unknown user (which is possible
for some types of realms), then I simply ignore them during the
send codepath, so that I don't later need to patch up their attributes.

Steve Howell 15d44f8d71 Encapsulate pm_recipient_count.
We no longer store pm_recipient_count on person objects, but we
instead use a Dict to store them. Then the new API is this:

    people.get_recipient_count()
    people.incr_recipient_count()

Steve Howell 9b04ec7472 Send dicts for cross realm users to JS.
We now send dictionaries for cross-realm bots. This led to the
following changes:

* Create get_cross_realm_dicts() in actions.py.
* Rename the page_params field to cross_realm_bots.
* Fix some back end tests.
* Add cross_realm_dict to people.js.
* Call people.add for cross-realm bots (if they are not already part of the realm).
* Remove hack to add in feedback@zulip.com on the client side.
* Add people.is_cross_realm_email() and use it in compose.js.
* Remove util.string_in_list_case_insensitive().

Steve Howell d70ac2fc0d Remove obsolete code for page_params.people_list.
The only module that uses people_list now is people.js, and that's
only during the page load process.

This code used to be in subs.js, but now it's in people.js and has
some unit tests.

I did this w/showell as part of live coding on Zulip.

Tim Abbott 60f6616030 people.js remove: Fix case-sensitive email matching. 2016-06-07 21:58:45 -07:00
Tim Abbott b25562ca1d Add and use util.is_current_user helper function.
Previously, we were checking if a particular user was the current user
in dozens of places in the codebase, and correct case-insensitive
checks were not used consistently, leading to bugs like #502.

Steve Howell 6ec72a290d Simplify condition for aborting people.reify().
Since it's basically impossible to add a person with an
undefined full_name--even "skeleton" people--there is no
need to check the full_name field to short circuit reify(),
because it will always be defined.
