Suyash Vardhan Mathur 20a97bdb05 events: Add functionality to mark messages as unread.
Co-authored-by: Steve Howell <showell@zulip.com>
Co-authored-by: Tim Abbott <tabbott@zulip.com>

This commit adds the backend functionality to
mark messages as unread through update_message_flags
with `unread` flag and `remove` operation.

We also manage incoming events in the webapp.

Tweaked by tabbott to simplify the implementation and add an API
feature level update to the documentation.

This commit was originally drafted by showell, and showell
also finalized the changes. Many thanks to Suyash here for
the main work here, which was to get all the tests and
documentation work moving forward.

AnushaNathRoy 8da5edb7af status_emoji: Show status emoji in message_body.
Previously the emoji_status set by the user would only be seen a few
places, it was decided that it would be useful to show the
emoji_status in a few additional other places as well.

Use the status_emoji template to show the status emoji in the
message_body and also implement live update behavior.

With refactor and minor edits by Yash RE.

YashRE42 c81a8c0346 message_live_update: Only rerender relevant messages for name/avatar.
Previously, we would call `rerender_messages_view()` in order to
rerender messages after user renames or avatar updates. This would
lead to rerendering the entire message list for every change,
regardless of whether any specific message had changed or not.

This used to be acceptable because user renames and avatar updates
were rare events, however, as we plan to show user status emoji near
user names and updates to those would be more frequent than is
affordable, this commit implements
`rerender_messages_view_for_user(user_id)` which only rerenders
messages which have actually been changed.

This commit is, thus, both an optimisation for the existing code and a
prep-commit for the user status emoji.

Anders Kaseorg 6f764ce4b3 message_list: Downgrade message_list.all to MessageListData.
This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.

This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

This is done to decouple our message view related update events

which tracks the complete data for all messages.

Anders Kaseorg 28f3dfa284 js: Automatically convert var to let and const in most files.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

Armaan Ahluwalia 6d255efe4c app: Prepare JS files for consumption by webpack.
This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.

It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.

However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.

So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.

Tim Abbott 4bf6904dca message_live_update: Fix double re-rendering of home_msg_list.

home_msg_list, so if one wasn't narrowed, we did all the work twice.

Steve Howell 03386f1485 avatar live updates: Do full re-render.
We now sweep all active messages for avatar changes and update
the message items and re-render, rather than patching the
DOM. This avoids some quirks that happen when subsequent messages
get sent and we re-render previous messages out of the message
store.

Our approach here is similar to how we do full-name updates.

Steve Howell 3e3444848d Remove avatar timestamp logic in the client.
We use to have client-side logic that would append timestamps
or random numbers to avatar URLs to force browsers to
refresh their cache.

We no longer need this now that the back end maintains
versions for avatar changes and puts the version in the URLs.

Steve Howell 0fc2f18c1d bug fix: Fix already-rendered messages for avatar updates.
Most of the magic happens in message_live_update.update_avatar().

The prior code was buggy, as it was using person.id instead of
person.user_id, and it was not setting the image resolution.

Steve Howell 90fa797f9b Use stream id to live-update messages for name changes.
When we change a stream name, we now use the stream id as the
key to find messages we need to live update. This eliminates
some possible race conditions from two users renaming a stream.

This commit introduces message_live_update.js.

The new call stack is this:

    subs.update_subscription_properties
    subs.update_stream_name
    message_live_update.update_stream_name
    message_list.update_stream_name
