This commit renames the keyword 'pm' to 'dm' in the
'pm_mention_email_disabled_user_ids' and
'pm_mention_push_disabled_user_ids' attributes of the
'RecipientInfoResult' dataclass.
'pm' and 'dm' are the acronyms for 'private message' and
'direct message' respectively.
It includes 'TODO/compatibility' code to support the old format
fields in the tornado queues during the Zulip server upgrades.
This commit adds code to pass all the required arguments to
select_related call for Message objects such that only the
required related fields are fetched from the database.
Previously, we did not pass any arguments to select_related,
so all the directly and indirectly related fields were fetched
when many of them were actually not being used and made the
query unnecessarily complex.
This commit completes the notifications part of the @topic
wildcard mention feature.
Notifications are sent to the topic participants for the
@topic wildcard mention.
This prep commit replaces the 'wildcard' keyword in the codebase
with 'stream_wildcard' at some places for better readability, as
we plan to introduce 'topic_wildcards' as a part of the
'@topic mention' project.
Currently, 'wildcards = ["all", "everyone", "stream"]' which is an
alias to mention everyone in the stream, hence better renamed as
'stream_wildcards'.
Eventually, we will have:
'stream_wildcard' as an alias to mention everyone in the stream.
'topic_wildcard' as an alias to mention everyone in the topic.
'wildcard' refers to 'stream_wildcard' and 'topic_wildcard' as a whole.
This commit adds backend code to check whether user has permission
to mention a group while sending message as per the can_mention_group
setting of the group.
Fixes a part of #25927.
This commit makes it possible for users to control the wildcard
mention notifications for messages sent to followed topics
via a global notification setting.
There is no support for configuring this setting
through the UI yet.
This commit makes it possible for users to control
the push notifications for messages sent to followed topics
via a global notification setting.

This commit makes it possible for users to control
the email notifications for messages sent to followed topics
via a global notification setting.
Although there is no support for configuring this setting
through the UI yet.
Add five new fields to the UserBaseSettings class for
the "followed topic notifications" feature, similar to
stream notifications. But this commit consists only of
the implementation of email notifications.
This is a prep commit that renames 'set_topic_mutes' and
'topic_is_muted' to 'set_topic_visibility_policy' and
'topic_has_visibility_policy' respectively, and refactors
them to work with any visibility_policy, not only MUTED.
This commits update the code to use user-level email_address_visibility
setting instead of realm-level to set or update the value of UserProfile.email
field and to send the emails to clients.
Major changes are -
- UserProfile.email field is set while creating the user according to
RealmUserDefault.email_address_visbility.
- UserProfile.email field is updated according to change in the setting.
- 'email_address_visibility' is added to person objects in user add event
and in avatar change event.
- client_gravatar can be different for different users when computing
avatar_url for messages and user objects since email available to clients
is dependent on user-level setting.
- For bots, email_address_visibility is set to EVERYONE while creating
them irrespective of realm-default value.
- Test changes are basically setting user-level setting instead of realm
setting and modifying the checks accordingly.
This commit renames parse_message_content_edit_or_delete_limit
to parse_message_time_limit_setting and also renames
MESSAGE_CONTENT_EDIT_OR_DELETE_LIMIT_SPECIAL_VALUES_MAP to
MESSAGE_TIME_LIMIT_SETTING_SPECIAL_VALUES_MAP.
We do this change since this function and object will also be
used for message move limit and it makes sense to have a more
generic name.
Black 23 enforces some slightly more specific rules about empty line
counts and redundant parenthesis removal, but the result is still
compatible with Black 22.

yet.)

A missed message email notification, where the message is the welcome
message sent by the welcome bot on account creation, get sent when
the user somehow not focuses the browser tab during account creation.
No missed message email or push notifications should be sent for the
messages generated by the welcome bot.
'internal_send_private_message' accepts a parameter
'disable_external_notifications' and is set to 'True' when the sender
is 'welcome bot'.
A check is introduced in `trivially_should_not_notify`, not to notify
if `disable_external_notifications` is true.
TestCases are updated to include the `disable_external_notifications`
check in the early (False) return patterns of `is_push_notifiable` and
`is_email_notifiable`.
One query reduced for both `test_create_user_with_multiple_streams`
and `test_register`.
Reason: When welcome bot sends message after user creation
`do_send_messages` calls `get_active_presence_idle_user_ids`,
`user_ids` in `get_active_presence_idle_user_ids` remains empty if
`disable_external_notifications` is true because `is_notifiable` returns
false.
`get_active_presence_idle_user_ids` calls `filter_presence_idle_user_ids`
and since the `user_ids` is empty, the query inside the function doesn't
get executed.
MissedMessageHookTest updated.
Fixes: #22884
Accessing .realm will cause a fetch query from the database if the
attribute hasn't been fetched already earlier in the codepath. That's
completely redundant if we're just comparing realms, and we should only
access .realm_id attribute. This seems to eliminate a query in some
codepaths, which is nice in this performance-sensitive function.
This commit changes the code to consider zero as an invalid value for
message_content_edit_time_limit_seconds. Now to represent the setting that
user can edit the message anytime, the setting value will be "None" in
database and "unlimited" will be passed to API from clients.
We should not monkey-patch message when unnecessary. Adding
`service_queue_events` to `SendMessageRequests` suits our need to type
safety here.

This commit removes WILDCARD_MENTION_POLICY_STREAM_ADMINS
option of wildcard_mention_policy since we are not moving
forward with stream administrator concept and instead working
on new permssions model as per #19525.
We also add a migration to change wildcard_mention_policy of
existing realms to WILDCARD_MENTION_POLICY_ADMINS. This change
is fine since we were already treating both the setting values
as same as stream admin concept was not implemented completely.
To explain the rationale of this change, for example, there is
`get_user_activity_summary` which accepts either a `Collection[UserActivity]`,
where `QuerySet[T]` is not strictly `Sequence[T]` because its slicing behavior
is different from the `Protocol`, making `Collection` necessary.
Similarily, we should have `Iterable[T]` instead of `List[T]` so that
`QuerySet[T]` will also be an acceptable subtype, or `Sequence[T]` when we
also expect it to be indexed.

The `get_link_embed_data` / `link_embed_data_from_cache` pair as
introduced in c93f1d4eda uses the cache
as a temporary store inside of the `embed_links` worker; this means
that it must be durable storage, or the worker will stall and re-fetch
the same links to preview them.
Switch to plumbing through the fetched URL embed data as an parameter
to the Markdown evaluation which uses them, rather than using the
cache as an intermediary. This frees up the cache to be merely a
non-durable cache.
As a side-effect, this removes get_cache_with_key, and
link_embed_data_from_cache which was its only callsite.

This commit adds the backend functionality to
mark messages as unread through update_message_flags
with `unread` flag and `remove` operation.
We also manage incoming events in the webapp.
Tweaked by tabbott to simplify the implementation and add an API
feature level update to the documentation.
This commit was originally drafted by showell, and showell
also finalized the changes. Many thanks to Suyash here for
the main work here, which was to get all the tests and
documentation work moving forward.
We want TypedDicts that have actual teeth.
In order to make type checks meaningful, we want
to avoid Any, object, or crazy Union types when
we aggregate each type of message, so we replaced
a generic function with three concrete functions.
Since we've changed the database to contain these new fields, we just
need to stop dropping them in the API code.
This also changes the public API to match the database format again
by removing `prev_subject` from edit history API.
Adds an API changelog feature update for the renamed `prev_subject`
field (to `prev_topic`) and new fields (`topic` and `stream`)
in the message `edit_history`.
Also, documents said `edit_history` in the `MessagesBase` schema
in the api documentation, which is used by the `/get-messages`,
`/get-events` and `/zulip-outgoing-webhooks` endpoints.

We modify the message_edit_history marshalling code so that this
commit does not change the API, since we haven't backfilled the data
yet.
FormattedEditHistoryEvent, introduced in the previous commit, doesn't
directly inherit fields from EditHistoryEvent, so no changes are
required there.
These types will help make iteration on this code easier.
Note that `user_id` can be null due to the fact that
edit history entries before March 2017 did not log
the user that made the edit, which was years after
supporting topic edits (discovered in test deployment
of migration on chat.zulip.org).

Previously, users found it annoying that the automated "Resolve topic"
notifications triggered an unread for everyone in the stream; this
discouraged some users from using the feature on older threads for
fear of being annoying. We change this to a better default, of only
users who participated in the topic (via either messages or reactions)
being eligible for the new message being unread.
We will likely want to create global and stream-level notifications
settings to control this behavior as a follow-up -- some users, like
me, might prefer the simpler "Always unread" behavior in some streams.
Note that the automated notifications that a topic was resolved will
still result in the topic being moved to the top of the left sidebar.
This would be somewhat difficult to change, since the left sidebar
algorithm just looks at the highest message ID in the topic.

In English, compound adjectives should essentially always be
hyphenated. This makes them easier to parse, especially for users who
might not recognize that the words “web public” go together as a
phrase.

This replaces the temporary (and testless) fix in
24b1439e93 with a more permanent
fix.
Instead of checking if the user is a bot just before
sending the notifications, we now just don't enqueue
notifications for bots. This is done by sending a list
of bot IDs to the event_queue code, just like other
lists which are used for creating NotificationData objects.

We make zero invalid value for message_content_delete_limit_seconds and
for handling the case of "Allow to delete message any time", the API-level
value of message_content_delete_limit_seconds is "anytime" and "None"
as the DB-level value. We also use these values for message retention
setting, so it helps maintain consistency.
