This fixes the bug where a user cannot type vim keys in the
general search box / user search / stream search,
since they are captured by recent topics.
The behaviour was flaky for stream search, but can be reproduced
consistently after previous commit fixing the popovers.any_active
output.
Go to Recent Topics on "#", no hash and "#recent_topics".
Go to Recent Topics as the last destination for escape key.
Map `a` key to All messages and change its hash to
`#all_messages`.
Recent Topics is no longer an overlay now, but note that it is
also not a typical messages narrow. It can reside between
an overlay and a Filter in the sense that it is dispalyed as
a typical Filter narrow but has properties of an Overlay.
Compose box is not visible in this view as it will be confusing
to many users and hence compose shortcuts have also been disabled.
Keyboard shortcuts that apply on messages have also been disabled.
The remaining shortcuts that apply to a narrow are still accessible
here.
This is a prep commit, which renames some variables
and functions involved in topic muting to include
the word "topic" in them.
This is done to have clarity when similar code
will be added as a part of the mute-user in
future commits.
Instead of prohibiting ‘return undefined’ (#8669), we require that a
function must return an explicit value always or never. This prevents
you from forgetting to return a value in some cases. It will also be
important for TypeScript, which distinguishes between undefined and
void.

This commit enables keyboard support for user info popovers for
navigating through popover options using up/down keys.
We add get_user_info_popover_items function, whose implementation
is different from other similar functions. Instead of using
popover_data.$tip we directly use $("div.user-info-popover")
because when we open the popover of bot owner from the bot
popover, the element which opens the popover is removed from
DOM and popover_data is undefined.
We check for open popovers before overlays on pressing escape key
because we will be adding popovers in overlays for bot owners in
further commits also and we would want to close the popover only
on pressing escape key and not the overlay.
We rename user_info_popover_handle_keyboard and get_user_info_popover_items
to user_info_popover_for_message_handle_keyboard and
get_user_info_popover_for_message items to differentiate it from functions
that will be added for bot-owner popovers.
ES and TypeScript modules are strict by default and don’t need this
directive. ESLint will remind us to add it to new CommonJS files and
remove it from ES and TypeScript modules.

We already have single-key shortcuts for all message controls but Zulip
should be usable from the keyboard without having to learn a bunch of
Zulip-specific keyboard shortcuts.
Prior to commit eb4a2b9d4e the center
area of the navbar was based on a structure that appended crumbs or
"tabs" as <li>s, forming a tab_bar and a tab_list.
However, in eb4a2b9d4e we apply a new
style and structure to the navbar which lets go of the convention of
tabs. Hence, we'd like to purge the tab_bar and tab_list labels from
our code base.
We purged tab_list in 1267caf5009118875f47fdafe312880af08024e1.
This commit purges tab_bar, it includes:
- A blanket search and replace of tab_bar with message_view_header.
- Splitting a single line comment in
tab_bar.js / message_view_header.js.
- The renaming of tab_bar.js to message_view_header.js.
- The renaming of tab_bar.hbs to message_view_header.hbs.
- A blanket search and replace of tab_data with
message_view_header_data.
- Replacing the single occurrence of tabbar with message_view_header
(it was within a comment.)
We should not allow every function who wants to narrow to All
messages to come up with their own method to do so. This
commit makes existing such functions use hashchange library to
do so.
Remove click event on All message button, it already contains
an <a> tag which navigates correctly.
We always use hashchange.go_to_location method now to open the
info_overlay, this makes sure that the url hash are reliable and
hotkeys don't get confused if an overlay is open or not.
We don't want to change hash to "" (this also doesn't navigates
us to 'All messages' view, hence the bug was not noticed.) on
exit of info_overlay.
This is a pretty straightforward conversion.
The bulk of the diff is just changing emoji.js
to ES6 syntax.
There is one little todo that can be deferred
to the next commit--we are now set up to have
markdown.js require emoji.js directly, since
it is no longer on `window`.
Commit a9ca5f603b (#15863) incorrectly
converted these. e.target is a DOM element, not a jQuery element;
likewise for the elem parameter of activate_element.

This is useful for the emoji-picker where holding down shift lets you
select multiple emojis. Otherwise when selecting multiple emojis with
the keyboard shortcuts you would need to release shift everytime you
wanted to navigate with the arrow keys.
Add arrow key navigation support for recent topics.
Simple jquery is used to allow navigation for filter buttons,
a grid system is used for navigation inside table.
* Show an empty overlay of recent topics.
* Register click event to open recent topics.
* Launch recent topics on "t" keypress.
This is based on the draft overlay.
We had a bunch of places where we
were calling `resize.resize_bottom_whitespace`
with no arguments, which has been a no-op
since the below commit that removed support
for our `autoscroll_forever` option:
fa44d2ea69
With the `autoscroll_forever` options things
like opening/closing the compose box could
alter how much bottom whitespace you'd want,
but we stopped supporting that feature in
2017.
Since then bottom_whitespace has just always
been 40% of the viewport size. So we only need
to change it on actual resize events.
It's worth noting that we still call
`resize_bottom_whitespace` indirectly in many
places, via `resize_page_components`, and
the latter actually causes
`resize_bottom_whitespace` to do real work,
but that work is redundant for most of those
codepaths, since they're not triggered by
changes to the viewport. So there are other
opportunities for cleanup.
Computed indexes into these raw objects should be guarded with
Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty; make our accessors do this
automatically and use them consistently.

This updates the logged-in top navbar to display the stream/message
name, number of users, and description. It also replaces the search
bar with a search icon that expands into a full-width search bar.

Fixes: #164.
Fixes: #5198.
We now handle the esc key completely within the
keydown handler that we already have for message
editing. We allow escape to work no matter what
the focused element is within an edited message,
and we blur that element properly and end the
edit.
We remove all the strange, duplicated logic
from hotkey.js.
This should also fix a blueslip error where the
hotkey code was passing message_edit a jQuery
element with zero length.
Fixes the traceback reported in #14151, though we should still look at
the DOM cleanup discussed there.
webpack optimizes JSON modules using JSON.parse("{…}"), which is
faster than the normal JavaScript parser.
Update the backend to use emoji_codes.json too instead of the three
separate JSON files.

The feature is used for editing stream descriptions as well, and in
any case, what's important is that it's a content-editable widget (aka
a form of input box).
This fix recently went on master, although it
hasn't actually been deployed yet (not even to czo),
so user impact should be zero:
0fa67c84d8
The fix mostly improved things, but it broke the
logic for pill containers. The symptom was that
if you tried to autocomplete "Cordelia" in the
pill box we'd instead invoke the "c" hotkey and
try to compose to a stream.
Profiles of typing in the Zulip webapp's compose box after opening the
stream creation widget showed that hotkey.processing_text was a
significant expense. There's no good reason for this -- the function
just needs to inspect the focused element; it just was written with a
sloppy selector.
While there's a secondary issue that, there's no good reason for this
extremely latency-sensitive code path (typing an additional character)
to be doing something extremely inefficient.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are

Apparently, the changes in fe2adeeee1 to
fix a Firefox focus bug accidentally had the side effect of removing
the topic text box from the area being considered, resulting in the
escape key no longer working to end the message edit from within that
text box.
It's a bit dangerous for the user to hit escape
to close the feedback widget, since it can
disappear suddenly, but users will try it, and
we should just close the widget.
(Hitting escape should be a noop if the box
is closed, but now it goes to "All Messages".)
Our logic for doing pageup/pagedown calculation inside compose was
written too tightly, and ended up breaking the keys inside message
editing.
Fix this by using generic selectors that don't hardcode compose.
This adds a line to static/js/hotkey.js for focusing the "Close"
button. Tweaked by tabbott to make more clear that we don't expect
there to ever be both a close button and a save button, since in that
case this code would be busted.
Fixes: #3830.
Also adds relevant tests and documentation. We currently
do not narrow to a new topic, and instead just narrow to
the stream. Similarly, we do not narrow to a PM if any of
the recipients are invalid.
This fixes a bug where hitting the "n" hotkey was
causing double work related to the hashchange system.
The code is now organized like this:
do_open_create_stream() does the GUI piece
We call the above directly for hash changes.
For in-app actions, whether clicks or hotkeys,
we call open_create_stream(), which delegates
most of the work to do_open_create_stream() but
also updates the hash.
This is the natural behavior that most users will
probably expect. If you need to go to All Messages when
topics are zoomed in, you can just hit ESC twice.
Before this change, if you hit ESC, then hotkey
code would call search.clear_search, which would
call narrow.deactivate(), which would then use
`$('#search_query')` to clear a value, but then
let search.clear_search blur the input and
disable the exit button. It was all confusing.
Things are a bit more organized now.
Now the code works like this:
hotkey.process_escape_key
Just call narrow.deactivate.
$('#search_exit').on('click', ...):
Just call narrow.deactivate.
narrow.deactivate:
Just call search.clear_search_form
search.clear_search_form:
Just do simple jquery stuff. Don't
change the entire user's narrow, not
even indirectly!
There's still a two-way interaction between
the narrow.js module and the search.js module,
but in each direction it's a one-liner.
The guiding principle here is that we only
want one top-level API, which is narrow.deactivate,
and that does the whole "kitchen sink" of
clearing searches, closing popovers, switching
in views, etc. And then all the functions it
calls out to tend to have much smaller jobs to
do.
This commit can mostly be considered a refactoring, but the
order of operations changes slightly. Basically, as
soon as you hit ESC or click on the search "X", we
clear the search widget. Most users won't notice
any difference, because we don't have to hit the
server to populate the home view. And it's arguably
an improvement to give more immediate feedback.
This is sort of a temporary fix to bring the state back to how it
was in commit: ef4337edcb. However,
long-term we will need to fix our local echo feature to do merging
of names just like we do on backend.
Pressing `Esc` did not blur a contenteditable div by default, while
an input field was blurred by default. Due to this when a user tried
to unnarrow using `Esc` key when the searchbox had focus, the focus
remained stuck in the div itself and no further action was taken.
This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.
It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.
However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.
So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.
This disables `ctrl + shift + [`, while `ctrl + [` will still trigger
an action.
Also, add a test for ensuring that the `ctrl + shift` combinations fall
through.
This disables `cmd-or-ctrl + shift + k` and `cmd-or-ctrl + shift + s`,
while `cmd-or-ctrl + k` and `cmd-or-ctrl + s` will still trigger
actions.
Also, add tests for ensuring that the `cmd-or-ctrl + shift`
combinations fall through.
Fix#9779.
This works for other text boxes as well, but compose is the main one
that one would want to do a search from.
It's possible we'll find after doing this that "getting back into
compose" becomes a problem, but I guess we can handle that when the
time comes.
