It is possible to send the message twice by clicking send button
very quickly twice or by pressing enter and send button simultaneously.
This can be easily reproduced for large messages sent in a stream
narrow. Hard to reproduce for small messages or in PM narrows.
I was not able to reproduce locally, but was able to reproduce on
chat.zulip.org. So, this is an untested bug fix.
Fixes#22562
This change ensures that every call to find the stream name or topic
in the composebox is calling compose_state functions instead of directly
taking a value from an HTML element specified by a classname.
This has better code readability and abstracts away the classname,
and also makes it easier to change which classname we use (which
will be happening in an upcoming change as part of switching the
stream name field to a dropdown).
Note that this change means that the stream name will always be
trimmed, whereas before it was whatever the user had written even
if it had trailing whitespace. This shouldn't be an issue as far
as we (me + Tim) can tell, and also it will become irrelevant as
soon as the dropdown changes land.
This code is equivalent, because the keep_leading_whitespace parameter
of get_or_set was never used for the stream name.
This addresses an open TODO and makes the code more readable.
This is part several updates for #22524.
This commit also removes `compose_error.hide()` since there is only
one remaining use of it (which has been replaced by the contents of
`hide()`). Eventually `#compose-send-status` should be replaced
fully in a future PR, after we rewrite the upload banner to use
the new banner template.
Testing note: I removed the test test_compose_not_subscribed_clicked
since it heavily relies on the old way of rendering banners and is too
UI-focused (instead of logic focused) for me to feel like it's worth
testing that the banner is removed when clicking the button.
This is part several updates for #22524.
Testing note: I removed the test test_compose_all_everyone_confirm_clicked
since it heavily relies on the old way of rendering banners and is too
UI-focused (instead of logic focused) for me to feel like it's worth
testing that the banner is removed when clicking the button.
This is part several updates for #22524.
Testing note: I removed the tests test_compose_invite_users_clicked
and test_compose_invite_close_clicked, since they heavily relied on
the old way of rendering banners and were too UI-focused (instead of
logic focused) for me to feel like it was worth testing that the
banners removed when clicking the buttons.
Error banners were rendered in a different place than warnings.
Now compose errors and warnings share the same template and styling
in compose_banner.hbs
Testing notes:
* I removed test_message_overflow since it seemed not to test
anything that test_check_overflow_text wasn't already testing.
* private_message_recipient() can't be called to set emails to non-valid
emails, so `invalid_recipient` cannot be tested (and is likely very
difficult to trigger in production, if possible at all).
This is the beginning of a fix for #22524 which converts several
banners to a new style. As a part of that set of changes, this
commit creates the shared template and warning styling. The
resolved topic warning was picked (for no particular reason)
to migrate first. Further commits updating other banners
to follow.
Removes call to reset_compose_message_max_height when clicking on
the markdown preview button, which due to the `#compose` div element
momentarily shrinking to be empty, caused the calculation of the
max-height to grow larger on each click.
Also refactors reset_compose_message_max_height to use the height
from `getBoundingClientRect`, which defaults to zero when empty.
And fixes a small discrepancy in how max-height is applied to
a div element vs a textarea element, so that the visible height
doesn't change between the preview and write modes in the compose
box.

Fixes#21757.
Previously the draft count would briefly increase between the action
of sending a message and the success of sending that message.
Now the draft count will only increase if the message fails to send.
This was added by commit 7f174213ed, and
appears to have been designed for responses that are *successful* but
falsy. Logically, these should not implicitly represent a failure to
be retried if it were.
Note from tabbott: The background is that this idempotent retry loop
was a hacky workaround for a bug we never understood but saw daily in
production. Especially during server restarts / client reloads,
something would result in 200 responses with no data being seen by the
frontend, despite the Django server not having received/processed the
request. Fortunately, this strange failure mode appears to have
stopped happening in late 2019, so we can delete this hack.

This is consistent with Jest and other standard test runners, and is
necessary to support asynchronous tests.

When switching back to writing mode after preview mode, the composebox
would be out of focus and so the the cursor would semingly get lost.
Now on clearing the preview mode, the composebox is focused and so the
cursor is seen blinking at it's original position.
When we were preparing the conversion to ES modules in 2019, the
primary obstacle was that the Node tests extensively relied on the
ability to reach into modules and mutate their CommonJS exports in
order to mock things. ES module bindings are not mutable, so in
commit 173c9cee42 we added
babel-plugin-rewire-ts as a kludgy transpilation-based workaround for
this to unblock the conversion.
However, babel-plugin-rewire-ts is slow, buggy, nonstandard,
confusing, and unmaintained. It’s incompatible with running our ES
modules as native ES modules, and prevents us from taking advantage of
modern tools for ES modules. So we want to excise all use of
__Rewire__ (and the disallow_rewire, override_rewire helper functions
that rely on it) from the tests and remove babel-plugin-rewire-ts.
Commits 64abdc199e and
e17ba5260a (#20730) prepared for this by
letting us see where __Rewire__ is being used. Now we go through and
remove most of the uses that are easy to remove without modifying the
production code at all.

This'll be shown only when in a different narrow from what
you're composing to.
Takes care of updating display of the button on moving from
one narrow to another and also on changing inputs. This is
what contributes to majority of js code in this commit.
We are not displaying this for private messages since we do not
have a consistent design for both stream and private compose areas.
See https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/101-design/topic/narrow.20to.20topic.2Fpms.20when.20composing/near/1318548
Thanks to Vlad Korobov for the icon and for proposing various
designs.
This simplifies some of our dependencies.
As an example, we really don't want compose.js
to depend on stream_subscribers_ui.js, since
the former doesn't use any actual UI code from
the latter.
We also rename the two functions here:
invite_user_to_stream -> add_user_ids_to_stream
remove_user_from_stream -> remove_user_id_from_stream
(The notion of "inviting" somebody to a stream is
somewhat misleading, since there is really no invitation
mechanism; you just add them.)
Apart from naming changes this is a verbatim code move.
Finally, we eliminate a little bit of test cruft--the
`override` helper already ensures that a function gets
called at least once during a test.
Show/hide scroll to bottom button when the last message is
not visible in the current scroll position.
We adjust the bottom offset of the button based on compose box
height.
Fixes#19862
Instead of blindly adjusting `compose-textarea` on resize,
we adjust the height of `compose-textarea` or `preview_message_area`
based on which is visible.
This effectively reverts part of
70d444a8eb. While it's correct that we
want to render this bit of Handlebars template early, it was not
correct to move all compose box initialization earlier.
Do the same thing we do with the left/right sidebar container
templates, which is to render them directly in `ui_init.js`.
Fixes#20778.
This is a fairly straightforward extraction.
It's good to test this with Iago, and then go into
Manage Streams and add/remove subscribers for a stream
like devel.
I copy/pasted two small functions that will soon
diverge from stream_edit. The get_stream_id function
will either use a module variable (since we're
generally only editing subscribers for one stream, and
we already have the singleton assumption with
`input_pill`) or a more strict CSS selector. And then
get_sub_for_target depends on get_stream_id. We may not
always need full subs, anyway, and when we adapt some
of this code for creating streams, things are likely to
change.
I stopped exporting a couple functions that have no
callers outside of this module.
The main entry point for the module is
enable_subscriber_management.
We continue to export invite_user_to_stream and
remove_user_from_stream, which should possibly be just
pulled into their own module to lessen some
dependencies, but they don't have too much baggage,
since they just wrap channel calls.
`Press Enter to send` used to hide `Send` button, we remove that
behaviour.
We show the current state of `Enter` hotkey action via text below
`Send` button which can toggle behaviour on click.
Before this commit, the message or any draft is deleted as soon
as the compose box is closed. So, it removes that by removing
delete_active_drafts and instead this commit will add the deletion
process of drafts in reify_message_id that is called when a
message is successfully sent and received.
Now, see there are two types of messages, one that are locally
echoed and the second ones are that aren't locally echoed but
sent directly to server. This commit only saves the message in
draft if it is locally echoed as they are the only messages
that show message failed in message list. The non locally echoed
ones aren't remove from the compose box until they are
successfully sent. Now as the draft-id is stored in the message
data for locally echoed messages, as they are echoed from the
server, they are deleted using that draft-id.
This also adds node tests for echo reify_message_id for testing
this feature that this commit is adding.
Fixes#17697
This commit moves the warn_if_private_stream_is_linked,
needs_subscribe_warning, and warn_if_mentioning_unsubscribed_user
to compose_validate.js from compose.js.
These warning functions are very naturally part of the compose box
validation system, though they're a bit different in being called from
the typeahead codebase.
Part of splitting compose.js into more natural modules.
We are doing this to avoid annoying behavior, when
"enter sends" is enabled, and the user accidentally hits
"Enter" and has to deal with the error message.
Fixes#19182
We use subs as a common variable name for a collection of stream
data structure used in settings, in lot of modules. So this
rename clears a bunch of related shadowed variables.
This commit first moves the compose.validate() function out
with the functions that are needed by it. Then one by one
checked for which function is now not needed in compose.js.
This moves all validation related functions out of "compose.js"
to "compose_validate.js".
Splitting compose announce variables out of compose.js.
This commit moves the "user_acknowledged_all_everyone" and
"user_acknowledged_announce" out of compose.js to reduce
cyclic dependency of compose_validate on compose.js.
Moving wildcard mentions to compose_validate.
The wildcard mention settings are mostly used while validating.
Also to reduce the cyclic dependence of compose in
compose_validate, the related wildcard mentions are moved out to
compose_vaidate.js.
This also converts reset_acknowledged functions to set values
by passing values.
We now only expose mock_template as a helper in run_test.
This has the following advantages:
* less boilerplate at the top of the file
* more surgical control with setting exercise_templates
* no more "f" hack (or render_foo consts)
* we force devs to explicitly mock the template
See frontend_tests/zjsunit for the substantive changes.
All the changes to the tests are very mechanical in nature.
When a user tries to send a (group) private message to a deactivated
user, a compose error is displayed.

If you call mock_template(fn, true), we will
call the actual template code and pass it to your
stub for verification.
We make this opt-in to prevent false positives
on template line coverage.
We special-case our handling of static/js/templates.js,
since it's important that all of our tests have
the Zulip-specific handlers for Handlebars pre-registered.
This runs in roughly the same amount of time as the
previous commit.
This commit renames `delete_draft_after_send` to
`delete_active_draft` for two main reasons:
1) This function does the job of deleting the draft that we
are currently using in compose box and it is independent
of the message sending functionality.
2) This is prep refactoring for new drafts behavior where
we delete the draft if the compose box is cleared and
closed.
There is no functionality change caused by this change. We turn the
event key to lowercase so hotkeys work even when Caps Lock is on as
it did before.
Tested by using the keybinds with and without Caps Lock in compose
box:
- "Ctrl + B" and "Ctrl + Shift + B",
- "Ctrl + I", and
- "Ctrl + Shift + L".
(Also tested that "Ctrl + Shift + I" and "Ctrl + L" do not work.)
