I removed a slightly confusing code comment, which I
will address in a follow up commit. Basically,
"slight smile" still doesn't win over "small airplane"
when you search for "sm", which kind of defeats the
purpose of having popular_emojis for the typeahead
use case. This is a problem with sort_emojis, though,
so when the comment was next to the list of popular
emojis, it wasn't really actionable.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

With webpack, variables declared in each file are already file-local
(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are
no longer needed.

The idea is to use this field for storing the best matching alias
to be displayed in search results. In subsequent commits I will
replace the search and rendering logic to use this field instead
of creating new objects on each search.
If `TEXT_EMOJISET` is currently selected emojiset then fallback to
`GOOGLE_EMOJISET` for displaying emojis in emoji picker and
composebox typeahead. We should pre-load the spritesheets in`emoji.js`
even in case of text emojiset otherwise on slow networks emoji picker
will appear empty initially.
All of our data related to emojis is in emoji.js.
Now typeahead_helper no longer depends on emoji_picker.
Generally we want typeahead_helper to only depend
on data modules to avoid complicated circular
dependencies (or at least mitigate them).
Now that `emoji_collection` and `emojis_by_name` are global
datasources in the webapp we need to rename things carefully
to reflect their actual meaning. The fact that emoji code is
used as a css class for unicode emoji is one thing but it is
not its sole use so renaming it seems a good idea.
This commit moves the `emoji_collection` datasource in the emoji
picker to emoji.js and renames it to `emojis_by_name`. It is a
mapping from emoji name to object where each object describes an
emoji. This is an effort in the direction of de-duplicating and
unifying the datasets being used by various our widgets(like
emoji picker and composebox typeahead) in the webapp. Migrating
all the widgets to a single datasource will help us in removing
the whole class of annoying bugs which causes some emojis to be
missing from some widgets.
This commit closes a long pending issue which involved moving the
`EMOTICON_CONVERSION` mapping to build_emoji infrastructure so
that there is only one source of truth. This was pending from the
time when this feature was implemented.
This migrates Zulip to use a dramatically better set of names and
aliases for our emoji set, defined in emoji_names.py (which is in turn
manually generated from our hand-curated CSV file).
This should significantly improve the experience of using Zulip's
emoji picker and emoji typeahead for finding what one is looking for.
This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.
It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.
However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.
So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.
Earlier, we used to convert all occurrences of an emoticon on the
frontend. That behavior has been altered to do conversions only
when the emoticon has some terminal symbols around them, and not
any alphabet or number. Also adds tests for emoji conversions for
the above logic.
Fixes#8585.
This commit migrates realm emoji to be addressed by their `id` rather
than their name. This fixes a long standing issue which was causing
an error on uploading an emoji with same name as a deactivated realm
emoji.
Fixes: #6977.
This commit switches our emoji infrastructure to use 256 color indexed
64px spritesheets. Earlier we were using non-indexed 32px spritesheets
which were blurry on high dpi displays. These indexed spritesheets not
only provide a crispier display but are also smaller in size.
This commit also removes the `emoji-datasource` package as a dependency
as all the data is now sourced from individual datasource packages.
Fixes: #7862.
Till now, we had been storing realm emoji's name in emoji code field
in reactions' model. This commit migrates it to store realm emoji's id.
It is a part of effort to migrate realm emojis to be referenced by their
id and not by name.
Add `translate_emoticons` to `prop_types` and `expected_keys`.
Furthermore, create a emoji-translating Markdown inline pattern.
Also use a JavaScript version of `translate_emoticons` and then use
this function during Markdown previews and as a preprocessor. This
is only needed for previews, because usually emoticon translation
happens on the backend after sending.
Add tests for emoticon translation, a settings UI, and a /help/ page
as well.
Tweaked by tabbott to fix various test failurse as well as how this
handles whitespace, requiring emoticons to not have adjacent
characters.
Fixes#1768.
This hack was used to fix the broken flag emojis in emoji-picker.
It was broken due to the incomplete migration to iamcal dataset.
See issue #4775 for more details.
This commit switches to use sprite sheets for rendering emojis
in all the remaining places, i.e., message bodies and composebox
typeahead. This commit also includes some changes to notifications.py
file so that the spans used for rendering emojis can be converted
to corresponding image tags so that we don't break the emoji rendering
in missed message emails since we can't use sprite sheets there.
As part of switching the bugdown system to use sprite sheets, we need
to switch the name_to_codepoint mappings to match the new sprite
sheets. This has the side effect of fixing a bunch of emoji like
numbers and flag emoji in the emoji pickers.
Fixes: #3895.
Fixes: #3972.
Deactivated emojis should not appear at any of the following places for
use:
1: Emoji pickers.
2: Composebox autocomplete.
3: Custom emoji settings page.
Due to differences between the codepoints of flag emojis in
`emoji_map.json` and iamcal's dataset, we need to patch the
css classes for the flag emojis temporarily until the migration
to iamcal's dataset is complete inorder to render them properly.
There is a difference between the images of flag emojis in our
old emoji farm and iamcal's spritesheets and since we have not
yet switched to using spritesheets for displaying emojis in
messages, there is a difference between the flag emojis as
rendered in messages and in emoji pickers.
Without changing how we render emoji in messages or changing the data
set used for emoji names, this switches us to the superior
percentage-based system for choosing which emoji from the spritesheet
to select and the iamcal sprite sheets.
It requires some small changes to CSS to ensure emoji are centered
properly in the new design.

Fixes#1134
Use `name_to_codepoint.json` file (and the similar structure in
emoji_codes.js) to map emoji names directly to codepoints and change
the rendered emoji image to `unicode/<codepoint.png>` rather than
`<emoji_name>.png`.
Fixes: #3539.
Replaces the hardcoded list of emoji_names and unicode_emoji_names in
static/js/emoji.js with a list generated from emoji_map.json, both to get
the list out of version control and so we can start modifying it for our
autocomplete. This does not change the contents of emoji_names. It sorts and
removes duplicates from unicode_emoji_names (causes no change in behavior,
since unicode_emoji_names is only used as if it were a set).
This commit replaces the placeholder "clipboard" button with a reaction button.
This is done on any message that can't be edited. Also, on messages sent by
the user the actions popover (toggled by the down chevron icon) contains
an option to add a reaction.
When clicked, a popover with a search bar and a list of emojis is displayed.
If the right sidebar is collapsed (the viewport is small), the popover is placed
to the left of the button.
Focus is set to the search bar. Typing in the search bar filters emojis.
Emojis with which the user has reacted to this message are highlighted.
Clicking them sends an API request to remove that reaction.
Clicking on non-highlighted emojis sends an API request to add a reaction.
When the popover loses focus it is closed.
The frontend listens for reaction events. When an add-reaction event is
received, the emoji is displayed at the bottom of the message with a
count initialized to 1. If there was an existing reaction to the message with
the same emoji, the count is incremented.
Old messages fetched from the server contain reactions.
They are displayed (along with title and count) at the bottom
of each message.
When clicking the emoji reaction at the bottom of the message, if the
user has already reacted with that emoji to this message, the reaction
is removed and the count is decremented. Otherwise, a reaction is added
and the count is incremented.
Hovering over the emoji reaction at the bottom of the message displays
a list of users who have reacted with this emoji along with the
emoji name.
Hovering over the emoji reactions at the bottom of the message displays
a button to add a reaction.
