Updates `compute_narrow_title` to cover the two cases for views
with undefined filters: "All messages" and "Recent conversations".
Also, moves the call to `notifications.redraw_title` from
`set_narrow_title` and to `update_narrow_title`.
Creates a new function, `compute_narrow_title`, that returns a
string for the narrow title based on the current filter, so that
`update_narrow_title` can call that function, and then use the
returned string to set the narrow title.
Adds a node test for the new `compute_narrow_title` function for
cases that differ from the title generated by `filter.get_title`.
We don't need to select the message after fetching messages if
the user changed the narrow in the meanwhile.
Note that in this context, message_lists.current ===
message_list.narrowed.
Before 2017, Zulip's manage streams and settings UIs were tab in the
same pane position as our current message feed and recent topics.
That original implementation was implemented using Bootstrap tabs;
while it hasn't been in use for years, we had a bunch of stale code
related to it leftover in this module.
Because "group-pm-with" is not a common search operator, instead of
setting a specialized title in the browser and tab, just use the
default title, "Search results".
Sets a default value of "Search results" for complicated narrow search
views and updates logic to use `filter.get_title` as a helper to
generate better titles for some common search views.
Does not update the existing behavior for narrow searches that have
"pm-with" or "group-pm-with" operators.
Note as of this change, the default search title and titles generated
from `filter.get_title` will be translated into the user's preferred
language.
Fixes#22952.
Fixes a subtle bug in the browswer title that occured if the user
input a keyword or another vaild search operator before `pm-with`
or `group-pm-with`.

We want to be able to differentiate between the stream and the topic
in the title bar, but the current implementation displays both the
steam name and the topic name in the same way which becomes difficult
to comprehend at a glance.
In this commit, we make the following changes,
- <stream_name> to #<stream_name> (when viewing the entire stream)
- <topic_name> to #<stream_name> > <topic_name> (when viewing a topic)
These changes help us differentiate between a stream and a topic with
with a quick glance.
Fixes#22969.
This was added by commit 7f174213ed, and
appears to have been designed for responses that are *successful* but
falsy. Logically, these should not implicitly represent a failure to
be retried if it were.
Note from tabbott: The background is that this idempotent retry loop
was a hacky workaround for a bug we never understood but saw daily in
production. Especially during server restarts / client reloads,
something would result in 200 responses with no data being seen by the
frontend, despite the Django server not having received/processed the
request. Fortunately, this strange failure mode appears to have
stopped happening in late 2019, so we can delete this hack.

This commit is a preparatory commit for #20870, it introduces
`handle_narrow_deactivated` and `handle_narrow_activated`
functions in pm_list.js, separately from top_left_corner.js,
to reduce the complexity of handling private messages section
separately.
This reverts commit 46b289cbda.
This commit didn’t pass Node tests independently of the PR #21726 that
it was split from, because pm_list is mocked.

This'll be shown only when in a different narrow from what
you're composing to.
Takes care of updating display of the button on moving from
one narrow to another and also on changing inputs. This is
what contributes to majority of js code in this commit.
We are not displaying this for private messages since we do not
have a consistent design for both stream and private compose areas.

Thanks to Vlad Korobov for the icon and for proposing various
designs.
We check if stream and topic present in the URL match that of
the message in its current state. If message is not available locally,
we fetch it before rendering the narrow.
Fixes#15290.
The previous logic didn't make sense -- the scroll offset in recent
topics is not a scroll offset within a message list, so saving it was
useless at best.
However, it was actually much worse than that, because trying to save
the pre-narrow offset while in the process of navigating away from
recent topics had the side effect of forcing a reflow, which resulted
in very expensive browser rendering to no purpose.
Adding this commit to the rest of the series of commits fixing
rendering issues when leaving recent topics, this commit results in an
impressive 3.05 s decrease in the first renarrow, an ~ 300 ms decrease
in the second renarrow and an ~ 500 ms decrease in the third renarrow.
There are still further forced reflows which could be reduced in this
render path, but they seem to not be as severe.
This is partially a prep commit to correctly saving/restoring the
position of the blue message select box when using browser
back/forward navigation, and partially a bug fix that ensures that
switching from "all_messages" to "recent_topics" preserves one's
position in "all_messages".
Note that this is with regards to saving the visual position of the
selected message, not about saving "which message was selected".
Notifies user when messages are not being marked as read through a
banner that lets them mark all messages in the narrow as read. Note
that the banner is only displayed if the user's actions, like
scrolling, would've actually marked the messages as read.
This avoids distracting the user when viewing a thread they've already
read.
tabbott has verified that if new messages come in, the banner will reappear.
Fixes: #18768.
When viewing a narrow such as a search or `sender:` view, where
consecutive messages in the view may not be consecutive in their
original stream/topic context, we should avoid displaying the messages
with a shared sender/recipient bar header, as that creates the
incorrect perception that they are consecutive.
Back in 2013 (bc8bc8567b), we
implemented this via the collapse_messages flag, but it appears more
recent refactoring (no more recent than
dbffb2a614) made it always true.
The original logic was incorrect, in that it only considered full-text
search views, and not other views with this property.
I originally planned to use the existing logic for
can_mark_message_read designed for this purpose, but I think there
might be product reasons why might want the logic to be independent.
Continuing the efforts to reduce dom trashing from the previous
commits, here we remove the third forced reflow by reordering the call
to $(".top-messages-logo").show() via narrow.reset_ui_state(), such
that it happens before the other DOM writes in
recent_topics_ui.hide().
Tweaked by tabbott to avoid adding an unnecessary if/else statement
around recent_topics_ui.hide.
This is a prep commit towards pushing the reset_ui_state calls upwards
into recent_topics_ui, in order to prevent a forced reflow. One side
effect of this change is that we add a call to
`narrow_banner.hide_empty_narrow_message()` from `narrow.activate()`.
This likely has no visible effect, in that the message list rendering
process would end up setting the narrow_banner state correctly, but
logically it could in the future avoid a banner from a stale banner
incorrectly appearing before we've rendered the current view.
This is a prep commit towards extracting a reset_ui_state function
which we can call from here, narrow.activate(), recent_topics.show()
and recent_topics.hide().
We want that function because it will enables us to prevent a forced
reflow when navigating from recent_topics to stream: xyz.
This shortcut now renarrows to an empty topic, rather than to the
stream, as long as the topic input is nonempty.
This was debated in the original implementation of this feature:
https://github.com/zulip/zulip/pull/9511#discussion_r190323319
Having seen the experience in practice, the current behavior is
surprising and we should migrate to the other option originally
considered. In particular, the argument that "narrowing to the stream
would still tell you the topic is empty" turns out to be inaccurate,
since the history within the stream may not be in the most recent
messages in the stream.
Fixes#19122.
We split recent_topics module into recent_topics_(ui + data + util).
This allows us to reduce cyclical dependencies which were
created due to large list of imports in recent topics. Also, this
refactor on its own makes sense.
The default label for empty narrows depends on whether it's a
stream/topic narrow or a PMs narrow.
We leave some default text in compose.hbs for reply label
because it take some time for the js to display the
correct label.
This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.
This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

This is a mostly verbatim extraction.
I re-phrased one line of code to work around a lint
false alarm. (Look for `preamble` in the diff.)
There are about 8 lines missing coverage here, so
the new module might be a good candidate to get
100% line coverage on.
Before this change, you would need to remove 74
edges from our dependency graph to make it
acyclic. Now it's 72.
This mainly extracts a new module called
browser_history. It has much fewer dependencies
than hashchange.js, so any modules that just
need the smaller API from browser_history now
have fewer transitive dependencies.
Here are some details:
* Move is_overlay_hash to hash_util.
* Rename hashchange.update_browser_history to
brower_history.update
* Move go_to_location verbatim.
* Remove unused argument for exit_overlay.
* Introduce helper functions:
* old_hash()
* set_hash_before_overlay()
* save_old_hash()
We now have 100% line coverage on the extracted
code.
