In theory, this function should never be called when Recent Topics is
visible. But if it somehow is, ensure that we don't access
message_lists.current without first checking whether it's visible.
This was added by commit 7f174213ed, and
appears to have been designed for responses that are *successful* but
falsy. Logically, these should not implicitly represent a failure to
be retried if it were.
Note from tabbott: The background is that this idempotent retry loop
was a hacky workaround for a bug we never understood but saw daily in
production. Especially during server restarts / client reloads,
something would result in 200 responses with no data being seen by the
frontend, despite the Django server not having received/processed the
request. Fortunately, this strange failure mode appears to have
stopped happening in late 2019, so we can delete this hack.

This commit adds the backend functionality to
mark messages as unread through update_message_flags
with `unread` flag and `remove` operation.
We also manage incoming events in the webapp.
Tweaked by tabbott to simplify the implementation and add an API
feature level update to the documentation.
This commit was originally drafted by showell, and showell
also finalized the changes. Many thanks to Suyash here for
the main work here, which was to get all the tests and
documentation work moving forward.
Notifies user when messages are not being marked as read through a
banner that lets them mark all messages in the narrow as read. Note
that the banner is only displayed if the user's actions, like
scrolling, would've actually marked the messages as read.
This avoids distracting the user when viewing a thread they've already
read.
tabbott has verified that if new messages come in, the banner will reappear.
Fixes: #18768.
There are a few instances where we check if messages can be marked
read and mark that list as read when scrolled to bottom. Using
this would be nicer and also this function can be extended later to
display a banner when messages are not being marked.
We split recent_topics module into recent_topics_(ui + data + util).
This allows us to reduce cyclical dependencies which were
created due to large list of imports in recent topics. Also, this
refactor on its own makes sense.
We also add a check to see if `message_feed_container` is visible,
since it is possible that recent topics could be visible which
was not a possibility when this logic was written.
This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.
This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

ES and TypeScript modules are strict by default and don’t need this
directive. ESLint will remind us to add it to new CommonJS files and
remove it from ES and TypeScript modules.

Since the pointer is no longer used to set the browser's position, we
no longer need this complex code to send updates to the server during
the bankruptcy flow.
Messages are automatically marked read when all the messages in
the current narrow are visible. While this is handy, this is
should not happen when any of the overlays are open.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

With webpack, variables declared in each file are already file-local
(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are
no longer needed.

After migration to an ES6 module, `messages_read_in_narrow` would no
longer be mutable from outside the module.

Apparently, we didn't have one of these, and thus had a moderate
number of generally very old violations in the codebase. Fix this and
clear the ones that exist..
This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.
It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.
However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.
So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.
This is preparation for enabling an eslint indentation configuration.
90% of these changes are just fixes for indentation errors that have
snuck into the codebase over the years; the others are more
significant reformatting to make eslint happy (that are not otherwise
actually improvements).
The one area that we do not attempt to work on here is the
"switch/case" indentation.
Fixes#8965.
Mark_message(s)_as_read is used in marking a message as having been
read by the browser, rename it to notify_server_message(s)_read to
avoid any confusion.
We were queuing up individual messages to be flagged as
read on the server before this change, and we used debounce
to avoid sending individual POSTs, but this created delays
that were ripe for race conditions.
Now we batch them in the caller and use throttle instead.
This now prevents us from slamming the server with lots of
individual requests, without as many opportunities for races.
(Note that we still have some possibility of race conditions,
but they should be rare now, and other commits will address
some of the other contributors to read/unread glitches.)
In the JS code, we now use `message.unread` universally as
the indicator of whether a message is unread, rather than
the `message.flags` array that gets passed down to us
from the server.
In particular, we use the unread flag for filtering when
you search.
A lot of this commit is just removing logic to add/remove
"read" from `message.flags` and updating tests.
We also explicitly set `message.unread` to `false` inside of
`unread.mark_as_read()` and no longer have `unread.set_flag()`.
(Some of the callers to `unread.set_flag` were also calling
`unread.mark_as_read`, which was updating the `message`
object, so now we just have `unread.mark_as_read` update
the `message` object. And then unread_ops.mark_all_as_read()
was already calling unread.declare_bankruptcy().)
This adds two similar functions to simplify
our batch processing of unread messages.
unread.get_unread_messages
unread.get_unread_message_ids
They are used to simplify two functions that loop
over messages. Before this change, the functions
would short circuit the loop to ignore messages
that were already read; now they just use the
helpers before the loop.
