Earlier there was only a realm level setting for configuring
who can edit user groups. A new group level setting is also added
for configuring who can manage that particular group.
Now, a user group can be edited by a user if it is allowed from
realm level setting or group level setting.
This commit make changes to also use group level setting
in determining whether a group can be edited by user or not.
Also, updated tests to use api_post and api_delete helpers instead
of using client_post and client_delete helpers with different users
being logged in.
Earlier there was a single decorator function to check whether
user can create and edit user groups. This commit adds a new
decorator function to check whether user has permissions to
create user groups.
This was done because in future commits we will be adding a
realm level setting for configuring who can create user groups.
Previously, this logic did the database queries to look up UserProfile
objects in a loop.
Fixes#21820.
Significantly improves Stream creation time and also unsusbcribing users.
Tested stream creation with 10k stream subscribers:
- before: 127 seconds ~2 mins
- after: 17 seconds ~0.3 min
Add a test case for user unsubscribing themself.
This hints to the browser that it should start DNS lookups for the
host, since it is likely to be necessary. It is a softer form than
`rel-preconnect`, which may be unnecessary in these cases, if the
client has the resources cached already.
The 'tutorial_status' field on 'UserProfile' model is
no longer used to show onboarding tutorial.
This commit removes the 'tutorial_status' field,
'POST users/me/tutorial_status' endpoint, and
'needs_tutorial' parameter in 'page_params'.
Fixes part of zulip#30043.
The database operations in 'access_user_group_for_setting' and
'check_add_user_group' used in 'add_user_group' view should be
collectively atomic.
This commit adds transaction.atomic decorator for that purpose.
Earlier, we were using 'send_event' in 'edit_user_group' codepath
which can lead to a situation where we enqueue events but the
function fails at a later stage.
Events should not be sent until we know we're not rolling back.
Fixes part of #30489.
This bug was introduced in da9e4e6e54.
validate validate_plan_for_authentication_methods is already called
inside validate_authentication_methods_dict_from_api, conditionally on
settings.BILLING_ENABLED. This additional, redundant call runs
regardless of BILLING_ENABLED, and thus prevents a self-hosted server
from enabling certain backends in the organization settings UI.
The impact of this is limited - in order to encounter this bug, a
self-hosted server would have to first disable the backend in the UI, as
self-hosted realms are created with all backend flags enabled. A backend
doesn't show up in the org settings UI until it is first enabled in
AUTHENTICATION_BACKENDS in settings.py - that's why this is a rare
state. A sequence of steps like this has to be followed to reproduce:
1. Add the backend to AUTHENTICATION_BACKENDS in settings.py.
2. Disable the backend in the org settings UI.
3. Now try to re-enable it, which fails due to the bug.
This commit removes create_web_public_stream_policy setting
since web-public channel creation permissions are now
handled by group-based setting.
We still pass "realm_create_web_public_stream_policy" in
"/register" response though for older clients with its
value being set depending on the value of group based
setting. If we cannot set its value to an appropriate enum
corresponding to the group setting, then we set it to
"Admins and moderators" considering that server will not
allow the users without permissions to create web-public
channels but the client can make sure that UI is
available to the users who have permission.
Migrate the following endpoints from @has_request_variables
to @typed_endpoint:
- get_user_group()
- delete_user_group()
- update_user_group_backend()
- update_subgroups_of_user_group()
- get_is_user_group_member()
- get_user_group_members()
- get_subgroups_of_user_group()
With tweaks from tabbott to avoid calling thunks unnecessarily.
Providing a signed Camo URL for arbitrary URLs opened the server up to
being an open redirector. Return 403 if the URL is not a user upload,
and the backend image if it is. Since we do not have ImageAttachment
rows for uploads at a time we wrote `/thumbnail?` URLs, return the
full-size content.
Previously animated images were automatically played in the
message feed of the web app.
Now that we have still thumbnails available for them, we can add a new
personal setting, "web_animate_image_previews", which controls how the
animated images would be played in the web app message feed -- always
played, on hover, or only in the image viewer.

Previously, if someone changed the font-size or line height
settings to some value other than the legacy values, we set
dense_mode to False if it was True. This commit changes the
code to require clients to pass dense_mode as False in such
cases and raise an error otherwise.
This is a small optimization to avoid DB queries if the bot owner
is not changed.
This also helps in avoiding showing the error message in UI if
anything other than the owner is updated for a deactivated bot.
Ideally if the bot owner is not changed, the bot_owner_id field
should not be passed in the request, but we would handle that
later given this is anyways a small nice optimization and we
follow this pattern at other places as well in the API.
Adds server and web app support for processing the new `with`
search operator.

This commit adds an 'transaction.atomic' decorator to the
'add_subscriptions_backend' view thus making the db operations
within the view atomic and helps to avoid race between events sent.
In tests where we make POST requests to this view, we have
wrapped the API calls with a transaction.atomic() context
manager. It helps us with NOT rolling back the entire test
transaction due to error responses.
In a2ef1d7e93, we made changes so
that when you send a message, your view jumps to the conversation
where you sent it.
For some users it was an improvement, few reported that it
disrupts their workflows.
This prep commit adds a setting which will be used to allow users
to decide whether to automatically go to conversation where they
sent a message.
Hash the salt, user-id, and now avatar version into the filename.
This allows the URL contents to be immutable, and thus to be marked as
immutable and cacheable. Since avatars are served unauthenticated,
hashing with a server-side salt makes the current and past avatars not
enumerable.
This requires plumbing the current (or future) avatar version through
various parts of the upload process.
Since this already requires a full migration of current avatars, also
take the opportunity to fix the missing `.png` on S3 uploads (#12852).
We switch from SHA-1 to SHA-256, but truncate it such that avatar URL
data does not substantially increase in size.
Fixes: #12852.
Previously, when a referrer's invitation to Zulip was accepted,
they got a notification from notification-bot indicating
their invitation has been accepted.
This commit adds an option for referrer to decide
whether he wants to receive the direct notification
from the notification-bot.

Creates a new "realm_deactivated" email that can be sent to realm
owners as part of `do_deactivate_realm`, via a boolean flag,
`email_owners`.
This flag is set to `False` when `do_deactivate_realm` is used for
realm exports or changing a realm's subdomain, so that the active
organization owners are not emailed in those cases.
This flag is optional for the `deactivate_realm` management command,
but as there is no active user passed in that case, then the email
is sent without referencing who deactivated the realm.
It is passed as `True` for the support analytics view, but the email
that is generated does not include information about the support
admin user who completed the request for organization deactivation.
When an active organization owner deactivates the organization, then
the flag is `True` and an email is sent to them as well as any other
active organization owners, with a slight variation in the email text
for those two cases.
Adds specific tests for when `email_owners` is passed as `True`. All
existing tests for other functionality of `do_deactivate_user` pass
the flag as `False`.
Adds `localize` from django.util.formats as a jinja env filter so
that the dates in these emails are internationlized for the owner's
default language setting in the "realm_deactivated" email templates.

This commit removes create_private_stream_policy setting as
we now use new group based setting.
The "/register" response includes realm_create_private_stream_policy
field to return a value representing superset of users who have the
permission to create private channels, as older clients still expect
this field.
Earlier we were using the type `OptionalNarrowListT` for all functions
that required "narrow" as a parameter.
This commit changes all the functions accepting a "narrow"
to use a list of the new `NarrowParameter`
instead of `OptionalNarrowListT` which is a list of dicts.
Removed the old `narrow_parameter` as we have shifted to
the new `NarrowParameter` Pydantic Object.
This new object provides better error messages for data validation,
hence changed the error messages in `test_message_fetch`.
Convert `custom_profile_fields.py` to use `typed_endpoint`.
Use `TypedDict` from `typing_extensions` instead of `typing`,
to support Pydantic's type checking.
This commit removes create_public_stream_policy setting

This commit adds a server level setting which controls whether the setting
can be set to anonymous user groups. We only allow it in the tests for
now because the UI can only handle named user groups.
This commit fixes the code store correct old value in audit
log data when changing can_mention_group setting from a
anonymous group to another anonymous group. The bug was
because the old value was being computed after updating
the UserGroup object with new members and subgroups and
is fixed by computing the old value for all the cases
and passing it to do_change_user_group_permission_setting.
This commit replaces occurrences of realm_uri with realm_url in email templates
and other related backend files.

"owner_request") vs where we can't (ToS abuse).
This commit moves validate_group_setting_value_change,
are_both_setting_values_equal and parse_group_setting_value
functions, which are used for updating the group settings, to
"zerver.lib.user_groups" as these functions will also be used for
group based realm and stream settings and "zerver.lib.user_groups"
file seems a better place to place such functions which are used
at multiple places.
For same reasons, we also move GroupSettingChangeRequest dataclass
to "zerver.lib.user_groups" file.
This commit adds include_realm_default_subscriptions parameter
to the invite endpoints and the corresponding field in
PreregistrationUser and MultiuseInvite objects. This field will
be used to subscribe the new users to the default streams at the
time of account creation and not to the streams that were default
when sending the invite.
This commit changes the code to subscribe the invited user to default
streams even if the user who invited the new user was not allowed to
subscribe others to streams.
This commit adds support to pass object containing both old and new
values of the can_mention_group setting, as well as detailed API
documentation for this part of the API system.

The naming `uri` is deprecated while `url` should be used in order to
satisfy URL standards. For this reason, four endpoints are affected:
* The response content of three endpoints `/server_settings`,
`/register` and `/realm` that contain a field `realm_uri` is
changed to `realm_url`.
* In one of the common fields for all mobile push notifications payloads,
`realm_url` field is now added as an alias to `realm_uri`.
For backwards compatibility, we keep the field `realm_uri` and add
an alias `realm_url`.

In #23380, we are changing all occurrences of uri with url in order to
follow the latest URL standard. Previous PRs #25038 and #25045 has
replaced the occurences of uri that has no direct relation with realm.
This commit changes just the model property, which has no API
compatibility concerns.
The "invites" worker exists to do two things -- make a Confirmation
object, and send the outgoing email. Making the Confirmation object
in a background process from where the PreregistrationUser is created
temporarily leaves the PreregistrationUser in invalid state, and
results in 500's, and the user not immediately seeing the sent
invitation. That the "invites" worker also wants to create the
Confirmation object means that "resending" an invite invalidates the
URL in the previous email, which can be confusing to the user.
Moving the Confirmation creation to the same transaction solves both
of these issues, and leaves the "invites" worker with nothing to do
but send the email; as such, we remove it entirely, and use the
existing "email_senders" worker to send the invites. The volume of
invites is small enough that this will not affect other uses of that
worker.

This prevents users from hammering the invitation endpoint, causing
races, and inviting more users than they should otherwise be allowed
to.
Doing this requires that we not raise InvitationError when we have
partially succeeded; that behaviour is left to the one callsite of
do_invite_users.

The returns plugin hasn’t been updated for mypy ≥ 1.6. This
annotation is more limited in that it only supports a fixed number of
positional arguments and no keyword arguments, but is good enough for
our purposes.

This commit adds an option to the advanced section of
Preferences settings, that would allow users to choose
whether to receive typing notifications from other
users.

This middleware was highly-specific to a set of URLs, and pulled in a
beautifulsoup dependency for Tornado. Move it closer to where it is
used, minimizing action at a distance, as well as trimming out a
dependency.
Users can now name task lists by providing the task list title in the
`/todo` command on the same line. Example: `/todo School Work`. If no
title is provided by the user, "Task list" (which is also the
placeholder) is used as default.
The author of a task list can later edit / update the task list title
in the todo widget, just like the question in the poll widget.
Fixes part of #20213.
f92d43c690 added uses of `@overload` to probide multiple type
signatures for `access_message`, based on the `get_user_message`
parameter. Unfortunately, mypy does not check the function body
against overload signatures, so it allows type errors to go
undetected.
Replace the overloads with two functions, for one of which also
returns the usermessage. The third form, of only returning if the
usermessage exists, is not in a high-enough performance endpoint that
a third form is worth maintaining; it uses the usermessage form.
The password will be included in the meeting link, so users won't have
to type it in manually. Example of the newly generated URLs:

This improves the experience in Zoom organizations requiring
authentication for all meetings, as otherwise the waiting room is
forcibly enabled.
For endpoints with a type parameter to indicate whether a message is
a direct or stream message, adds support for passing "channel" as a
value for stream messages.

Creating a bot with a name that is already in use
will raise an error. However, by deactivating
the existing bot, creating a new bot with the
same name, and then reactivating the original bot,
it is possible to have multiple bots with the same name.
To fix this, we check if the bot name is already
in use in the active bots list. If it is,
an error will be raised, prompting either the
name of the existing bot to be changed or
the bot to be deactivated.

Previously, users were allowed to signup or change their names to
those which already existed in the realm.
This commit adds an Organization Permission, that shall enforce
users to use unique names while signing up or changing their
names. If a same or normalized full name is found in realm,
then a validation error is thrown.
Fixes#7830.
Previously, email addresses that weren't connected to a Zulip account
were ignored but now they receive an email stating their email isn't
connected to a Zulip account.
Also, removes the "Thanks for using Zulip!" line at the end of the
find accounts email that's sent when a Zulip account is found.
Updates the i18n test that used this string with another in the
German translation from this a successful account found email.

Updates the help link in the find team emails to use the external
host information.
Removes the link for the external host since the realm links are
what the user should click on to login.
Also, passes corporate_enabled to the find team email to adjust
the text for Zulip Cloud emails.
This was only used in the undocumented narrow_stream mode, and relied
on a deprecated synchronous XHR request.

Refactor `report_csp_violations` view to use `typed_endpoint` decorator
instead of `has_request_variables`. This change improves code
consistency and enhances codebase comprehension.
Depending on the kind of config error being shown, different "go back"
links may be more appropriate.
We probably hard-coded /login/ for it, because these config errors are
most commonly used for authentication backend config error, where it
makes sense to have /login/ as "go back", because the user most likely
indeed got there from the login page.
However, for remote_billing_bouncer_not_configured, it doesn't make
sense, because the user almost surely is already logged in and got there
by clicking "Plan management" inside the gear menu in the logged in app.
It's best for these to just be consistent. Therefore:
1. The .../not-configured/ error page endpoint should be restricted to
.has_billing_access users only.
2. For consistency, self_hosting_auth_view_common is tweaked to also do
the .has_billing_access check as the first thing, to avoid revealing
configuration information via its redirect/error-handling behavior.
The revealed configuration information seems super harmless, but it's
simpler to not have to worry about it and just be consistent.
Just shows a config error page if the bouncer is not enabled. Uses a new
endpoint for this so that it can work nicely for both browser and
desktop app clients.
It's necessary, because the desktop app expects to get a json response
with either an error or billing_access_url to redirect to. Showing a
nice config error page can't be done via the json error mechanism, so
instead we just serve a redirect to the new error page, which the app
will open in the browser in a new window or tab.
Only affects zulipchat, by being based on the BILLING_ENABLED setting.
The restricted backends in this commit are
- AzureAD - restricted to Standard plan
- SAML - restricted to Plus plan, although it was already practically
restricted due to requiring server-side configuration to be done by us
This restriction is placed upon **enabling** a backend - so
organizations that already have a backend enabled, will continue to be
able to use it. This allows us to make exceptions and enable a backend
for an org manually via the shell, and to grandfather organizations into
keeping the backend they have been relying on.
