We should rearrange Zulip's developer docs to make it easier to
find the documentation that new contributors need.
Name changes
Rename "Code contribution guide" section -> "Contributing to Zulip".
Rename "Contributing to Zulip" page -> "Contributing guide".
Organizational changes to the newly-named "Contributing to Zulip":
Move up "Contributing to Zulip", as the third link in sidebar index.
Move up renamed "Contributing guide" page to the top of this section.
Move up "Zulip code of Conduct", as the second link of this section.
Move down "Licensing", as the last link of this section.
Move "Accessibility" just below "HTML and CSS" in Subsystems section.
Update all links according to the changes above.
Redirects should be added as needed.
Fixes: #22517.
As a consequence:
• Bump minimum supported Python version to 3.8.
• Move Vagrant environment to Ubuntu 20.04, which has Python 3.8.
• Move CI frontend tests to Ubuntu 20.04.
• Move production build test to Ubuntu 20.04.
• Move 3.4 upgrade test to Ubuntu 20.04.

One of the links in the GSoC ideas section in docs/gsoc.md led to
a page with 0 results. This has now been replaced with the correct
link leading to a list of issues with the mentioned labels.
This uses the myst_heading_anchors option to automatically generate
header anchors and make Sphinx aware of them. See
https://myst-parser.readthedocs.io/en/latest/syntax/optional.html#auto-generated-header-anchors.
Note: to be compatible with GitHub, MyST-Parser uses a slightly
different convention for .md fragment links than .html fragment links
when punctuation is involved. This does not affect the generated
fragment links in the HTML output.

We previously had a convention of redundantly including the directory
in relative links to reduce mistakes when moving content from one file
to another. However, these days we have a broken link checker in
test-documentation, and after #21237, MyST-Parser will check relative
links (including fragments) when you run build-docs.

As a consequence:
• Bump minimum supported Python version to 3.7.
• Move Vagrant environment to Debian 10, which has Python 3.7.
• Move CI frontend tests to Debian 10.
• Move production build test to Debian 10.

This page contains a lot of other material related to GSoC than
just project ideas.
We would also want to add a redirect from the old URL to the new
one from the RTD admin page.
We recently changed /developer-community to /development-community.
Now that this change is in production, we can also migrate the
external links in our ReadTheDocs documentation.
- Add missing link for GitHub.
- Fix broken links to Matt Ringel's blog post.
- Add link to Julia Evans blog post.
- Add section heading for "Questions Are Important."
- Rearrange some content to fit with new section heading.
With additional tweaks from tabbott:
* Avoid linking to chat.zulip.org not via our documentation.
* Avoid the CZO abbreviation.
This helps increase the probability that folks read the guidelines for how the
chat.zulip.org community works and what streams to use before arriving there.
Fixes#19827.
This page is documentation for our participation in GSoD, which was a
few years ago. We can resurrect it if we participate in the program
again, so there's no need to keep it as a live page.
We have disabled CircleCI and are using GitHub Actions for automated
testing.
docs: Changed context from CircleCI to Github Actions and wrote
some documentation specific to GH Actions.
tools: Replaced env checks for CIRCLECI with GITHUB_ACTION.
README: Use GitHub Actions build status badge.
These aren't relevant to most users, but in the interest of
transparency, we also don't want the existence of these to feel like a
secret. And maybe publishing their existence will result in folks who
we forget to add to these private streams asking about them.
`zproject/settings.py` itself is mostly-empty now. Adjust the
references which should now point to `zproject/computed_settings.py`
or `zproject/default_settings.py`.
Rename the file and all the refrences to file and module test_bugdown.py
to test_markdown.py.
This commit is part of series of commit that renames bugdown to markdown.
We're migrating to using the cleaner zulip.com domain, which involves
changing all of our links from ReadTheDocs and other places to point
to the cleaner URL.
datetime.timezone is available in Python ≥ 3.2. This also lets us
remove a pytz dependency from the PostgreSQL scripts.

The problem is not the list comprehension, as the previous wording
implied, but rather the fact that data is needed from the linked
table.
Be explicit about _what_ in the QuerySet API is helpful for addressing
this -- namely, use of `select_related`.
- I fixed a typo with "lowerecase"
- I elaborated on the prefix before elaborating
on the rest of the message (i.e. went in correct
order).
- I split out the provision example (since we
talk about it some depth).
- I added more positive examples.
- I removed the distracting italics around the
good commit messages.
- I moved the "gather_subscriptions" commit to
the bottom of the list, since we elaborate
on that below the list.
Adds an explicit explanation to help contributors avoid common mistakes
like capitalization errors, missing trailing periods, and incorrectly
prefixing the name of a subsystem.
Fixes#1535.
- Updated 260+ links from ".html" to ".md" to reduce the number of issues
reported about hyperlinks not working when viewing docs on Github.
- Removed temporary workaround that suppressed all warnings reported
by sphinx build for every link ending in ".html".
Details:
The recent upgrade to recommonmark==0.5.0 supports auto-converting
".md" links to ".html" so that the resulting HTML output is correct.
Notice that links pointing to a heading i.e. "../filename.html#heading",
were not updated because recommonmark does not auto-convert them.
These links do not generate build warnings and do not cause any issues.
However, there are about ~100 such links that might still get misreported
as broken links. This will be a follow-up issue.
Background:
docs: pip upgrade recommonmark and CommonMark #13013
docs: Allow .md links between doc pages #11719Fixes#11087.
Move docs/tutorials/documenting-api-endpoint.md to
docs/documentation/api.md.
This makes it easier to find when browsing the complete set of
materials on writing Zulip documentation.
