When we were preparing the conversion to ES modules in 2019, the
primary obstacle was that the Node tests extensively relied on the
ability to reach into modules and mutate their CommonJS exports in
order to mock things. ES module bindings are not mutable, so in
commit 173c9cee42 we added
babel-plugin-rewire-ts as a kludgy transpilation-based workaround for
this to unblock the conversion.
However, babel-plugin-rewire-ts is slow, buggy, nonstandard,
confusing, and unmaintained. It’s incompatible with running our ES
modules as native ES modules, and prevents us from taking advantage of
modern tools for ES modules. So we want to excise all use of
__Rewire__ (and the disallow_rewire, override_rewire helper functions
that rely on it) from the tests and remove babel-plugin-rewire-ts.
Commits 64abdc199e and
e17ba5260a (#20730) prepared for this by
letting us see where __Rewire__ is being used. Now we go through and
remove most of the uses that are easy to remove without modifying the
production code at all.

This'll be shown only when in a different narrow from what
you're composing to.
Takes care of updating display of the button on moving from
one narrow to another and also on changing inputs. This is
what contributes to majority of js code in this commit.
We are not displaying this for private messages since we do not
have a consistent design for both stream and private compose areas.
See https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/101-design/topic/narrow.20to.20topic.2Fpms.20when.20composing/near/1318548
Thanks to Vlad Korobov for the icon and for proposing various
designs.
Instead of setting `disable` attribute to the elements, we make
them look like disabled and remove interactions with them. This
helps us keep the hotkey handling logic for navigation easier
to manage.
Fixes#21279
As detailed in this conversation:
https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/137-feedback/topic/recent.20topics.20timestamps/near/1337670
This time format change is not working out as an improvement for at
least some users, myself included.
I think we do want to use some of the refinements attempted here (and
in particular, I'm keeping the new function with its nice test suite),
but I think it's better to revert now and fix forward in a future
release.
See #19775 for added background.
This is partially a prep commit to correctly saving/restoring the
position of the blue message select box when using browser
back/forward navigation, and partially a bug fix that ensures that
switching from "all_messages" to "recent_topics" preserves one's
position in "all_messages".
Note that this is with regards to saving the visual position of the
selected message, not about saving "which message was selected".
It's 2022 and the WHATWG no longer recognizes the term URI. Everything
is now a URL or a type of URL. Which is great because it's way less
confusing. Details here:
https://url.spec.whatwg.org/
We follow how other apps present older messages, e.g. Gmail,
Facebook Messenger, etc. display it.
Specifically, the logic we use is:
If the time is <24hr ago, show an absolute time, like "21:30" (or "9:30pm").
Otherwise, show what day it was, and not a time
If the day was yesterday, say "Yesterday".
Otherwise, if it was <7 days ago, say the day of week, like "Friday".
Otherwise, if it was <1 year ago, say the month and day, like "Sep 6".
Otherwise, say the year, month, and day, like "Sep 9, 2020".
With some tweaks from Tim Abbott to better handle the future case.
Fixes#19775
Notifies user when messages are not being marked as read through a
banner that lets them mark all messages in the narrow as read. Note
that the banner is only displayed if the user's actions, like
scrolling, would've actually marked the messages as read.
This avoids distracting the user when viewing a thread they've already
read.
tabbott has verified that if new messages come in, the banner will reappear.
Fixes: #18768.
Previously, the tests relied on `recent_topics_util.is_visible`
returning false unless we used override to return true, this is
because `recent_topics_util.is_viible` would return
`$("#recent_topics_view").is(":visible");` which would always be false
since we don't create a stub for `$("#recent_topics_view")`.
This would cause the tests to fail if we changed how `is_visible`
found it's return value, which we want to do for performance reasons,
and as such, this commit adds explicit overrides where needed.
Further more, even when we do override `is_visible` as override(rt,
"is_in_focus", ...) we do not override the `is_visible` used in
`recent_topics_uttil.is_in_focus`, and so our tests stil rely on that
`is_visible` always returning false. This commit address that by also
adding explicit overrides for `is_in_focus` where needed.
d779a1c tweaked `get_full_datetime` to return a string instead
of a {date, time} object. This function is used for recent topics
too but wasn't fixed to use the string.
This resulted in showing 'undefined undefined' in tooltip.
We now only expose mock_template as a helper in run_test.
This has the following advantages:
* less boilerplate at the top of the file
* more surgical control with setting exercise_templates
* no more "f" hack (or render_foo consts)
* we force devs to explicitly mock the template
See frontend_tests/zjsunit for the substantive changes.
All the changes to the tests are very mechanical in nature.
If you call mock_template(fn, true), we will
call the actual template code and pass it to your
stub for verification.
We make this opt-in to prevent false positives
on template line coverage.
We special-case our handling of static/js/templates.js,
since it's important that all of our tests have
the Zulip-specific handlers for Handlebars pre-registered.
This runs in roughly the same amount of time as the
previous commit.
We split recent_topics module into recent_topics_(ui + data + util).
This allows us to reduce cyclical dependencies which were
created due to large list of imports in recent topics. Also, this
refactor on its own makes sense.
We use css() pretty rarely in our codebase, and
it can sometimes be used mistakenly, when a better
alternative is to toggle a class for external css.
It's hard to support the full API in zjquery, so
we just punt and tell folks to create their own
stubs.
Most of the existing tests that were "fixed" here
weren't actually verifying the behavior of the css()
calls, and for those I just create no-op stubs.
In a few places I verify that css() was called as
expected.
We were apparently not using the ListWidget API for replacing the
content of a widget without removing the whole thing from the DOM and
replacing it.
Unless ListWidget has unexpected bugs, this should have the exact same
result as the previous logic, with much a nicer user experience.
We don't want to rely on browser hash to check if RT is visible
because soon we want to display default_view without any hash
and RT may or may not be visible in that hash.
We move compose from being a part of message feed to
being a part of middle column which is a common parent of recent
topics and message feed. This allows us to use a common compose
box for both the views. Fortunately, compose actions were
independent of this change so there weren't any evident
side effects.
Fixes#17543
This reduces the complexity of our dependency graph.
It also makes sub_store.get parallel to message_store.get.
For both you pass in the relevant id to get the
full validated object.
This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.
This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

Use fully resolvable request paths because we need to be able to refer
to third party modules, and to increase uniformity and explicitness.

For most functions that we were using __Rewire__ for,
it's better to just use the override helper, which
use __Rewire__ under the hood, but also resets
the reference at the end of run_tests.
Another nice thing about override() is that it reports
when you never actually needed the mock, and this
commit fixes the instances found here.
I didn't replace every call to __Rewire__. The
remaining ones fall under these categories:
* I looked for ") =>" in my code sweep,
so I missed stuff like "noop" helpers.
* Sometimes we directly update something
in a module that's not a function. This
is generally evil, and we should use setters.
* Some tests have setup() helpers or similar
that complicated this code sweep, so I
simply punted.
* Somes modules rely on intra-test leaks. We
should fix those, but I just punted for the
main code sweep.
This is a deceptively ugly diff. It makes
the actual code way more tidy.
I basically inlined some calls to mock_module
and put some statements in lexical order.
