This new function optimizes how we fetch subscriptions
for streams. Basically, it excludes most long-term-idle
users from the query.
With 8k users, of which all but 400 are long term idle,
this speeds up get_recipient_info from about 150ms
to 50ms.
Overall this change appears to save a factor of 2-3 in the backend
processing time for sending or editing a message in large, public
streams in chat.zulip.org (at 18K users today).
This makes it parallel with deliver_scheduled_messages, and clarifies
that it is not used for simply sending outgoing emails (e.g. the
`email_senders` queue).
This also renames the supervisor job to match.
In the source realm selector, when we select a realm from which we want
to import the data, we pass the source realm's string_id. The problem
with this approach is that the string_id can be an empty string. This
commit makes the source_realm pass the realm's id instead of string_id.
Now, the source_realm's value will either be an integer or "" (empty
string) when we don't want to import settings from any realm.
This commit modifies the user objects returned by 'GET /users',
'GET /users/me', 'GET /users/{user_id}' and 'GET /users/{email}'
endpoints to include role field.
We also include role field in the page_params['realm_users'] dict
and in the person object sent in (type="realm_user", op="add")
event.
Currently, there are separate tests for testing change of one role
to other, precisely 8, with most of them having similar structure
of code. This commit adds a helper function check_user_role_change
which contains all the code for testing and the tests for different
role just use this helper function to avoid duplication of code.
This refactor is helpful considering we would want to add tests
for moderators also, which would contain multiple tests for
testing changing different user roles to moderator and vice versa.
Tweaked by timabbott to make the code more readable by checking for
every user role flag instead of just checking the certain flags and
using conditionals.

This commit removes can_access_all_realm_members function as
it is not used anywhere in code other than tests.
This function was originally added in 4483e33102 and was
only used in digest.py other than the tests, but its use
in diget.py was removed in 735b6cb761 and the function
itself was not removed from models.py.
Changed the name of the test-user cordelia from `Cordelia Lear` to
`Cordelia, Lear's daughter`.
This change will enable us to test users with escape characters in
their names.
I also updated the Node, Puppeteer, Backend tests and Fixtures to
support this change.
Messages sent by muted users are marked as read
as soon as they are sent (or, more accurately,
while creating the database entries itself), regardless
of type (stream/huddle/PM).
ede73ee4cd, makes it easy to
pass a list to `do_send_messages` containing user-ids for
whom the message should be marked as read.
We add the contents of this list to the set of muter IDs,
and then pass it on to `create_user_messages`.
This benefits from the caching behaviour of `get_muting_users`
and should not cause performance issues long term.
The consequence is that messages sent by muted users will
not contribute to unread counts and notifications.
This commit does not affect the unread messages
(if any) present just before muting, but only handles
subsequent messages. Old unreads will be handled in
further commits.
This adds the is_user_active with the appropriate code for setting the
value correctly in the future. In the following commit a migration to
backfill the value for existing Subscriptions will be added.
To ensure correct user_profile.is_active handling also in tests, we
replace all direct .is_active mutation with calls to appropriate
functions.
TextField is used to allow users to set long stream + topic narrow
names in the urls.
We currently restrict users to only set "all_messages" and
"recent_topics" as narrows.
This commit achieves 3 things:
* Removes recent topics as the default view which loads when
hash is empty.
* Loads default_view when hash is empty.
* Loads default_view on pressing escape key when it is unhandled by
other present UI elements.
NOTE: After this commit loading zulip with an empty hash will
automatically set hash to default_view. Ideally, we'd just display
the default view without a hash, but that involves extra complexity.
One exception is when user is trying to load an overlay directly,
i.e. zulip is loaded with an overlay hash. In this case,
we render recent topics is background irrespective of default_view.
We consider this last detail to be a bug not important enough to block
adding this setting.
Add new rest api endpoint GET users/{email} for looking up a user by
email, which is useful especially for corporate API applications that
might already have a user's email address.
Fixes#14302.
zerver/lib/users.py has a function named access_user_by_id, which is
used in /users views to fetch a user by it's id. Along with fetching
the user this function also does important validations regarding
checking of required permissions for fetching the target user.
In an attempt to solve the above problem this commit introduces
following changes:
1. Make all the parameters except user_profile, target_user_id
to be keyword only.
2. Use for_admin parameter instead of read_only.
3. Adds a documentary note to the function describing the reason for
changes along with recommended way to call this function in future.
4. Changes in views and tests to call this function in this changed
format.
Changes were tested using ./tools/test-backend.

Adjustments made due to changes in Django 3.0:
- test_signup: INTERNAL_RESET_URL_TOKEN was moved to
PasswordResetConfirmView.reset_url_token
- test_message_fetch:
"add_never_cache_headers() and never_cache() now add the private
directive to Cache-Control headers."
- "django.utils.html.escape() now uses html.escape() to escape HTML.
This converts ' to ' instead of the previous equivalent decimal
code '." - this requires adjusting the expected decimal code
in some of the string fixtures in tests.
By moving the relevant logic from realm.get_bot_domain to
get_fake_email_domain we will make realm.host be used (if possible) for
dummy user addresses. That is, instead of user11@zulipchat.com, the
address will become user11@subdomain.zulipchat.com.
Allowing any admins to create arbitrary users is not ideal because it
can lead to abuse issues. We should require something stronger that
requires the server operator's approval and thus we add a new
can_create_users permission.
In 709493cd75 (Feb 2017)
I added code to render_markdown that re-fetched the
sender of the message, to detect whether the message is
a bot.
It's better to just let the ORM fetch this. The
message object should already have sender.
The diff makes it look like we are saving round trips
to the database, which is true in some cases. For
the main message-send codepath, though, we are only
saving a trip to memcached, since the middleware
will have put our sender's user object into the
cache. The test_message_send test calls internally
to check_send_stream_message, so it was actually
hitting the database in render_markdown (prior to
my change).
Before this change we were clearing the cache on
every SQL usage.
The code to do this was added in February 2017
in 6db4879f9c.
Now we clear the cache just one time, but before
the action/request under test.
Tests that want to count queries with a warm
cache now specify keep_cache_warm=True. Those
tests were particularly flawed before this change.
In general, the old code both over-counted and
under-counted queries.
It under-counted SQL usage for requests that were
able to pull some data out of a warm cache before
they did any SQL. Typically this would have bypassed
the initial query to get UserProfile, so you
will see several off-by-one fixes.
The old code over-counted SQL usage to the extent
that it's a rather extreme assumption that during
an action itself, the entries that you put into
the cache will get thrown away. And that's essentially
what the prior code simulated.
Now, it's still bad if an action keeps hitting the
cache for no reason, but it's not as bad as hitting
the database. There doesn't appear to be any evidence
of us doing something silly like fetching the same
data from the cache in a loop, but there are
opportunities to prevent second or third round
trips to the cache for the same object, if we
can re-structure the code so that the same caller
doesn't have two callees get the same data.
Note that for invites, we have some cache hits
that are due to the nature of how we serialize
data to our queue processor--we generally just
serialize ids, and then re-fetch objects when
we pop them off the queue.
During the new user creation code path, there can be no existing
active clients for the user being created, so we can skip the code to
send events to that user's clients.
The tests here reflect that we need to send fewer events, and do fewer
queries that would have been spent computing data for these..
Fixes#16503, combined with the long series of recent changes by Steve
Howell to fix super-linear behavior in this code path.
We no bulk up peer_add/peer_remove events by user if the
same user has subscribed to multiple streams (and just
that single user).
This mostly optimizes the new-user codepath, but the
algorithm is a bit more general in nature.
This test was flaky due to some date-related
non-determinism. I make all the Message objects
current to make add_new_user_history reliably
try to bulk-update UserMessage rows to read.
The main race conditions, which actually happened in production was with
concurrent execution of deliver_email and clear_scheduled_emails.
clear_scheduled_emails could delete all email.users in the middle of
deliver_email execution, causing it to pass empty to_user_ids list to
send_email. We mitigate this by getting the list of user ids in a single
query and moving forward with that snapshot, not having to worry about
database data being mutated anymore.
clear_scheduled_emails had potential race conditions with concurrent
execution of itself due to not locking the appropriate rows upon
selecting them for the purpose of potentially deleting them. FOR UPDATE
locks need to be acquired to prevent simultaneous mutation.
Tested manually with some print+sleep debugging to make some races
happen.

Now, gather_subscriptions include web-public streams in the 3 sets
of streams that it returns, subscribed, unsubscribed and never
subscribed.
This is part of PR #14638 that aims to allow guest users to browse and
subscribe to web-public streams.
A few major themes here:
- We remove short_name from UserProfile
and add the appropriate migration.
- We remove short_name from various
cache-related lists of fields.
- We allow import tools to continue to
write short_name to their export files,
and then we simply ignore the field
at import time.
- We change functions like do_create_user,
create_user_profile, etc.
- We keep short_name in the /json/bots
API. (It actually gets turned into
an email.)
- We don't modify our LDAP code much
here.
When you post to /json/users, we no longer
require or look at the short_name parameter,
since we don't use it in any meaningful way.
An upcoming commit will eliminate it from the
database.
There is still some miscellaneous cleanup that
has to happen for things like analytics queries
and dead code in node tests, but this should
remove the main use of pointers in the backend.
(We will also still need to drop the DB field.)
We've been seeing an exception in server_event_dispatch.js in
production where in large organizations, sometimes when a new user
joined, every other browser in the organization would throw an
exception processing some sort of realm_user/update event.
It turns out the cause was that when a user copies their profile from
an existing user account with a user-uploaded avatar, the code path we
reused to set the avatar properly send a realm_user/update event about
the avatar change -- for a user that hadn't been fully created and
certainly hadn't have the realm_user/add event sent for.
We fix this and add tests and comments to prevent it recurring.
(Removed an incorrect docstring while working on this).
With this implementation of the feature of the automatic theme
detection, we make the following changes in the backend, frontend and
documentation.
This replaces the previous night_mode boolean with an enum, with the
default value being to use the prefers-color-scheme feature of the
operating system to determine which theme to use.

This commit adds some basic checks while adding or removing
realm owner status of a user and adds code to change owner
status of a user using update_user_backend.
This also adds restriction on removing owner status of the
last owner of realm. This restriction was previously on
revoking admin status, but as we have added a more privileged
role of realm owner, we now have this restriction on owner
instead of admin.
We need to apply that restriction both in the role change code path
and the deactivate code path.
We're migrating to using the cleaner zulip.com domain, which involves
changing all of our links from ReadTheDocs and other places to point
to the cleaner URL.
This commit removes short_name and client_id fields from the user
objects returned by get_profile_backend because neither of them
had a purpose.
* short_name hasn't been present anywhere else in the Zulip API for
several years, and isn't set through any coherent algorithm.
* client_id was a forgotten 2013-era predecessor to the queue_id field
returned by the register_event_queue process.
The combination of these changes gets us close to having `get_profile`
have the exact same format as other endpoints fetching a user object.
This commit changes get_profile_backend to be based on format_user_row
such that it's a superset of the fields for our other endpoints for
getting data on a user.
To be clear, this does not removes any of the exisiting fields, that
were returned by this endpoint.
This change adds some fields to the User object returned by the
endpoint. API docs are updated accordingly for the added fields.

This commit fixes the tests to use role instead of is_admin in

endpoint and were also not caught in tests.

are of no use now.
This commit changes the person dict in event sent by do_change_user_role
to send role instead of is_admin or is_guest.

This commit changes the update user API endpoint to accept role
as parameter instead of the bool parameters is_guest and is_admin.

"dropdown_options_widget".
Modified by tabbott to document the API change.
The new realm_owner role is added as option for role field in
UserProfile model and is_realm_owner is added as property for the user
profile.
Aside from some basic tests validating the logic, this has no effect
as users cannot end up with set as realm owners.

The `email` field for identifying the user being modified in these

We've had bugs in the past where users with a name in the format
"Alice|999" would confuse our markdown rendering or typeahead. While
that's a fully solvable problem, there's no real use case for that, so
it's probably simpler to just prevent users from setting their name
that way.

We try to use the correct variation of `email`
or `delivery_email`, even though in some
databases they are the same.
(To find the differences, I temporarily hacked
populate_db to use different values for email
and delivery_email, and reduced email visibility
in the zulip realm to admins only.)
In places where we want the "normal" realm
behavior of showing emails (and having `email`
be the same as `delivery_email`), we use
the new `reset_emails_in_zulip_realm` helper.
A couple random things:
- I fixed any error messages that were leaking
the wrong email
- a test that claimed to rely on the order
of emails no longer does (we sort user_ids
instead)
- we now use user_ids in some place where we used
to use emails
- for IRC mirrors I just punted and used
`reset_emails_in_zulip_realm` in most places
- for MIT-related tests, I didn't fix email
vs. delivery_email unless it was obvious
I also explicitly reset the realm to a "normal"
realm for a couple tests that I frankly just didn't
have the energy to debug. (Also, we do want some
coverage on the normal case, even though it is
"easier" for tests to pass if you mix up `email`
and `delivery_email`.)
In particular, I just reset data for the analytics
and corporate tests.
I guess `test_classes` has 100% line coverage
enforcement, which is a bit tricky for error
handling.
This fixes that, as well as making the name
snake_case and improving the format of the
errors.
This test was using the anti-pattern of doing an
assertion inside a conditional.
I added the `findOne` helper to make it easier
to write robust tests for scenarios like this.
We now have this API...
If you really just need to log in
and not do anything with the actual
user:
self.login('hamlet')
If you're gonna use the user in the
rest of the test:
hamlet = self.example_user('hamlet')
self.login_user(hamlet)
If you are specifically testing
email/password logins (used only in 4 places):
self.login_by_email(email, password)
And for failures uses this (used twice):
self.assert_login_failure(email)
This reduces query counts in some cases, since
we no longer need to look up the user again. In
particular, it reduces some noise when we
count queries for O(N)-related tests.
The query count is usually reduced by 2 per
API call. We no longer need to look up Realm
and UserProfile. In most cases we are saving
these lookups for the whole tests, since we
usually already have the `user` objects for
other reasons. In a few places we are simply
moving where that query happens within the
test.
In some places I shorten names like `test_user`
or `user_profile` to just be `user`.
This refactors get_members_backend to return user data of a single
user in the form of a dictionary (earlier being a list with a single
dictionary).
This also refactors it to return the data with an appropriate key
(inside a dictionary), "user" or "members", according to the type of
data being returned.
Tweaked by tabbott to use somewhat less opaque code and simple OpenAPI
descriptions.
The email domain restriction to @zulip.com is annoying in development
environment when trying to test sign up. For consistency, it's best to
have tests use the same default, and the tests that require domain
restriction can be adjusted to set that configuration up for themselves
explicitly.
This commit mostly makes our tests less
noisy, since emails are no longer an important
detail of sending messages (they're not even
really used in the API).
It also sets us up to have more scrutiny
on delivery_email/email in the future
for things that actually matter. (This is
a prep commit for something along those
lines, kind of hard to explain the full
plan.)
This adds a new API endpoint for querying basic data on a single other
user in the organization, reusing the existing infrastructure (and
view function!) for getting data on all users in an organization.
Fixes#12277.
For new user onboarding, it's important for it to be easy to verify
that Zulip's mobile push notifications work without jumping through
hoops or potentially making mistakes. For that reason, it makes sense
to toggle the notification defaults for new users to the more
aggressive mode (ignoring whether the user is currently actively
online); they can set the more subtle mode if they find that the
notifications are annoying.
This is adds foreign keys to the corresponding Recipient object in the
UserProfile on Stream tables, a denormalization intended to improve
performance as this is a common query.
In the migration for setting the field correctly for existing users,
we do a direct SQL query (because Django 1.11 doesn't provide any good
method for doing it properly in bulk using the ORM.).
A consequence of this change to the model is that a bit of code needs
to be added to the functions responsible for creating new users (to
set the field after the Recipient object gets created). Fortunately,
there's only a few code paths for doing that.
Also an adjustment is needed in the import system - this introduces a
circular relation between Recipient and UserProfile. The field cannot be
set until the Recipient objects have been created, but UserProfiles need
to be created before their corresponding Recipients. We deal with this
by first importing UserProfiles same way as before, but we leave the
personal_recipient field uninitialized. After creating the Recipient
objects, we call a function to set the field for all the imported users
in bulk.
A similar change is made for managing Stream objects.
Fixes#13452.
The migration from UserProfile.is_realm_admin/UserProfile.is_guest in
e10361a832 broke our LDAP-based support
for setting a user's role via LDAP properties, which relied on setting
those fields. Because the django-auth-ldap feature powering that only
supports booleans (and in any case, we don't want to expose constants
like `ROLE_REALM_ADMINISTRATOR` to the LDAP configuration interface),
it makes sense to provide setters for these legacy fields for
backwards-compatibility.
We lint against using these setters directly in Zulip's codebase
directly. The issue with using these is that when changing user's
.role we want to create appropriate RealmAuditLog entries and send
events. This isn't possible when using these setters - the log entries
and events should be created if the role change in the UserProfile is
actually save()-ed to the database - and on the level of the setter
function, it's not known whether the change will indeed be saved.
It would have to be somehow figured out on the level of post_save
signal handlers, but it doesn't seem like a good design to have such
complexity there, for the sake of setters that generally shouldn't be
used anyway - because we prefer the do_change_is_* functions.
The purpose of this change is narrowly to handle use cases like the
setattr on these boolean properties.
For a long time, we've been only doing the zxcvbn password strength
checks on the browser, which is helpful, but means users could through
hackery (or a bug in the frontend validation code) manage to set a
too-weak password. We fix this by running our password strength
validation on the backend as well, using python-zxcvbn.
In theory, a bug in python-zxcvbn could result in it producing a
different opinion than the frontend version; if so, it'd be a pretty
bad bug in the library, and hopefully we'd hear about it from users,
report upstream, and get it fixed that way. Alternatively, we can
switch to shelling out to node like we do for KaTeX.
Fixes#6880.
This change makes it possible for users to control the notification
settings for wildcard mentions as a separate control from PMs and
direct @-mentions.
Previously, we were using user_profile.email rather than
user_profile.delivery_email in all calculations involving Gravatar
URLs, which meant that all organizations with the new
EMAIL_ADDRESS_VISIBILITY_ADMINS setting enabled had useless gravatars
not based on the `user15@host.domain` type fake email addresses we
generate for the API to refer to users.
The fix is to convert these calculations to use the user's
delivery_email. Some refactoring is required to ensure the data is
passed through to the parts of the codebase that do the check;
fortunately, our automated tests of schemas are effective in verifying
that the new `sender_delivery_email` field isn't visible to the API.

This adds a FAKE_EMAIL_DOMAIN setting, which should be used if
EXTERNAL_HOST is not a valid domain, and something else is needed to
form bot and dummy user emails (if email visibility is turned off).
It defaults to EXTERNAL_HOST.
get_fake_email_domain() should be used to get this value. It validates
that it's correctly set - that it can be used to form valid emails.
If it's not set correctly, an exception is raised. This is the right
approach, because it's undesirable to have the server seemingly
peacefully operating with that setting misconfigured, as that could
mask some hidden sneaky bugs due to UserProfiles with invalid emails,
which would blow up the moment some code that does validate the emails
is called.
Instead of having a hard-coded url, it seems better to replace it with
get_gravatar_url - which returns the correct url, without breaking if
the email/id of the example user changes.
Changed the requirements for UserProfile in order to allow use of

Clients won't have access to user email addresses, and thus won't be
able to compute gravatars.
The tests for this are a bit messy, in large part because our tests
for get_events call subsections of it, rather than the main function.
This commit migrates the Subscription's notification fields from a
BooleanField to a NullBooleanField where a value of None means to
inherit the value from user's profile.
Also includes a migrations to set the corresponding settings to None
if they match the user profile's values. This migration helps us in
getting rid of the weird "Apply to all" widget that we offered on
subscription settings page.
The mobile apps can't handle None appearing as the stream-level
notification settings, so for backwards-compatibility we arrange to
only send True/False to the mobile apps by applying those defaults
server-side. We introduce a notification_settings_null value within a
client_capabilities structure that newer versions of the mobile apps
can use to request the new model.
This mobile compatibility code is pretty effectively tested by the
existing test_events tests for the subscriptions subsystem.
This makes the implementation of `get_realm` consistent with its
declared return type of `Realm` rather than `Optional[Realm]`.

Follow up on 92dc363. This modifies the ScheduledEmail model
and send_future_email to properly support multiple recipients.
Tweaked by tabbott to add some useful explanatory comments and fix
issues with the migration.
This commit fixes an error in the logic for allowing admins to edit any
user's CPF (custom profile field) values. The logic allowing users to
edit their own CPF values is however sound. What happens is that of all
the CPF types, for "choice fields" as well as "URL" and "date fields",
when the value is reset/deleted/cleared by the admin in the Admin UI
(organization settings), the frontend would send a null (empty string)
value to the backend for that custom profile field (as this is, after
all, the new value in this case). This would then triggers the backend
validators to return an error message.
We fix this by using the method check_remove_custom_profile_field_value,
that both code paths (user editing their own CPFs and admin editing a
user's CPF) can call.
A key part of this is the new helper, get_user_by_delivery_email. Its
verbose name is important for clarity; it should help avoid blind
copy-pasting of get_user (which we'll also want to rename).
Unfortunately, it requires detailed understanding of the context to
figure out which one to use; each is used in about half of call sites.
Another important note is that this PR doesn't migrate get_user calls
in the tests except where not doing so would cause the tests to fail.
This probably deserves a follow-up refactor to avoid bugs here.
This adds a function that sends provided email to all administrators
of a realm, but in a single email. As a result, send_email now takes
arguments to_user_ids and to_emails instead of to_user_id and
to_email.
We adjust other APIs to match, but note that send_future_email does
not yet support the multiple recipients model for good reasons.
Tweaked by tabbott to modify `manage.py deliver_email` to handle
backwards-compatibily for any ScheduledEmail objects already in the
database.
Fixes#10896.
This supports guest user in the user-info-form-modal as well as in the
role section of the admin-user-table.
With some fixes by Tim Abbott and Shubham Dhama.
Currently, if there is only one admin in realm and admin tries
to updates any non-adminuser's full name it throws error,
"Cannot remove only realm admin". Because in `/json/users/<user_id>`
api check_if_last_admin_is_changed is checked even if property
is_admin is not changed.
This commit fix this issue and add tests for it.
This is largely inspired by requests from people not liking the
Google's new emojiset. A lot of people were requesting to revert
back to old blobs emojiset so we are re-enabling this feature
after making relevant infrastructure changes for supporting google's
old blob emojiset and re-adding support for twitter emojiset.
Fixes: #10158.
This renames Realm.restricted_to_domain field to
emails_restricted_to_domains, for greater clarity as to what it does
just from seeing the setting name, without having to look it up.
Fixes part of #10042.
This adds a common function `access_user_by_id` to access user id
within same realm, complete with a full suite of unit tests.
Tweaked by tabbott to make the test much more readable.
This is intended to support our upcoming feature to support copying a
user's customization settings from an existing account that user owns
in another organization.
