Previously, the "stream_topic_history" used to store unacked float
message ids as well in its "max_message_id" of stream and
"message_id" of topic histories.
This commit updates it to rather store only the acked message ids
here, and rather use the "echo_state" module so as to look up
for unacked messages in case of looking for recent topics, or
max message id in functions.
Previously, when `insert_local_message` was called, the
data structures in the `echo_state` are updated with the new
local messages after calling `insert_new_message`. This would
update the stream sidebar before even updating the `echo_state`
with the new local messages.
This commit introduces `track_local_message`, which basically
updates the `echo_state` data structures with the local
message before actually updating the stream sidebar.
This is a preparatory commit to update stream_topic_history
to only contain acked message ids.
We start caching MessageListData objects for the narrows which
user has visited. We restore the cached objects if the filters
match. Also, the cached objects are updated based on events. One
major piece is update path the is pending implementation is the
message move code path.
This commit extracts the "waiting_for_id" and "waiting_for_ack"
data structures of "echo.js" into a separate module in "echo_state".
This is a preparatory commit so as to be able to use them for
"stream_topic_history" module, without causing import cycles.
Earlier, on sending a new message in a search view it didn't
appear in that view for the sender.
This was because the message event received by the sender
was processed by 'msg_list.view.rerender_messages' which
effectively did nothing because the message is not
rendered in the first place during local echo in that
message list view.
We can't determine locally if the message should be added
to the search narrow. So, we use maybe_add_narrowed_messages
when narrowed to such views.
This fixes the bug and the message appears in the search view.
Commit 50f5cf9ad8 (#30227) changed
message_helper.process_new_message (called by
message_events.insert_new_messages) to return a newly created message
object rather than mutating the object it was passed. So
echo.insert_local_message needs to use this new object, fixing a
regression where we’d fail to replace a locally echoed message when
the server-rendered message came in.

Important changes in this commit:
* We only cache message list for "Combined feed" if it is the
default view.
* We modify existing handling of home message list code so that
it can be used to for any message list that we want to cache
using a new `preserve_rendered_state` variable.
* narrow_state.filter() returns the filter of combined feed view list
instead of `undefined`.
* We start fetching messages from the latest message on app load.
* Messages in all messages data and Recent view are always synced.
* If combined feed view list is not cached, we don't track it's
last pointer, effectively sending user to the latest unread
message always .
Now whenever we initiate sending a message, we save / update its draft,
which is deleted on a successful send. Earlier, we did this only for
locally echoed messages. Hence a non locally echoed message's draft
would remain, if created in the timeframe between initiating send and
receiving the same message from the server, which can be significant
for slow connections.
For spectators, the chunk of page_params that originates from
do_events_register isn’t assigned until ui_init.js. That means the
TypeScript type of page_params is mostly a lie during module load
time: reading a parameter too early silently results in undefined
rather than the declared type, with unpredictable results later on.
We want to make such an early read into an immediate runtime error,
for both users and spectators consistently, and pave the way for
runtime validation of the page_params type. As a first step, split
out the subset of fields that pertain to the current user.

Needed for typescript, because we want to preserve
types, so instead of mutating a message object,
we can instead calculate return these values
for a message object before it's created in full.

Some files already were using `noop` in place of `() => {}`.
It's both clearer what it means and is easier to type.
This updates all test files to fully use `noop`, and
adds a shared import from the test lib file.
This should cause no functional changes.
This is part of a multi-step effort to move away
from using stream names to reference streams, now
that it's impossible for a user to write a message
with an invalid stream name (since switching to
the dropdown).
This commit moves mainly two functions from `ui.js` to `message_live_update`,
`update_message_in_all_views` and `update_starred_view`. This is done in favor of
eliminating `ui.js` and also these functions are more closely related to
`message_live_update` module than to `ui` module.
We also move `show_message_failed` and `show_failed_message_success` to `echo.js`
for cleaner seperation of responsibilities.
This lets us simplify the long-ish ‘../../static/js’ paths, and will
remove the need for the ‘zrequire’ wrapper.
