Renames the filename so that it accurately reflects its contents
given the changes to the "Recommended setup" page in the previous
commit, and updates all links accordingly.
This uses the myst_heading_anchors option to automatically generate
header anchors and make Sphinx aware of them. See
https://myst-parser.readthedocs.io/en/latest/syntax/optional.html#auto-generated-header-anchors.
Note: to be compatible with GitHub, MyST-Parser uses a slightly
different convention for .md fragment links than .html fragment links
when punctuation is involved. This does not affect the generated
fragment links in the HTML output.

We previously had a convention of redundantly including the directory
in relative links to reduce mistakes when moving content from one file
to another. However, these days we have a broken link checker in
test-documentation, and after #21237, MyST-Parser will check relative
links (including fragments) when you run build-docs.

The certbot package installs its own systemd timer (and cron job,
which disabled itself if systemd is enabled) which updates
certificates. This process races with the cron job which Zulip
installs -- the only difference being that Zulip respects the
`certbot.auto_renew` setting, and that it passes the deploy hook.
This means that occasionally nginx would not be reloaded, when the
systemd timer caught the expiration first.
Remove the custom cron job and `certbot-maybe-renew` script, and
reconfigure certbot to always reload nginx after deploying, using
certbot directory hooks.
Since `certbot.auto_renew` can't have an effect, remove the setting.
In turn, this removes the need for `--no-zulip-conf` to
`setup-certbot`. `--deploy-hook` is similarly removed, as running
deploy hooks to restart nginx is now the default; pass
`--no-directory-hooks` in standalone mode to not attempt to reload
nginx. The other property of `--deploy-hook`, of skipping symlinking
into place, is given its own flog.
I have updated the remote development documentations to be more accurate
when it comes to developing on a Zulip Development Droplet to ensure
the user knows to access at `zulip.username.zulipdev.org`.
This commit adds about Remote - SSH extension (in VS Code), which
helps us develop remotely by providing a similar interface as if we
are developing locally. We also simplify the documentation for RMate
to use the new standards.
Tweaked by tabbott for simplification/formatting.
- Updated 260+ links from ".html" to ".md" to reduce the number of issues
reported about hyperlinks not working when viewing docs on Github.
- Removed temporary workaround that suppressed all warnings reported
by sphinx build for every link ending in ".html".
Details:
The recent upgrade to recommonmark==0.5.0 supports auto-converting
".md" links to ".html" so that the resulting HTML output is correct.
Notice that links pointing to a heading i.e. "../filename.html#heading",
were not updated because recommonmark does not auto-convert them.
These links do not generate build warnings and do not cause any issues.
However, there are about ~100 such links that might still get misreported
as broken links. This will be a follow-up issue.
Background:
docs: pip upgrade recommonmark and CommonMark #13013
docs: Allow .md links between doc pages #11719Fixes#11087.
Sphinx/ReadTheDocs supports automatically translating links written as
to `.md` files to point to the corresponding `.html` files, so this
migration does not change the resulting HTML output in ReadTheDocs.
But it does fix apparent broken links on GitHub.
This doesn't prevent people from reading the documentation on GitHub
(so doesn't mitigate the fact that some rtd-specific syntax does not
render properly on GH), but it will prevent us from getting erroneous
issues reported about the hyperlinks not working.
Fixes: #11087.
The docs specify passing hostname with the --hostname flag, which
doesn't match the actual usage in scripts/setup/setup-certbot. This
change fixes the docs to match the actual usage.
This documentation had a tendency to bitrot, and in any case now that
we have tooling for doing Fedora (etc.) from provision, it's likely
the case that adding other Linux/UNIX distros we care about to
provision would not be difficult and is a better path than maintaining
this manually-curated duplicate of `tools/provision`.
Further, even if this documentation was maintained, one would still
end up wanting to run `provision` after rebasing a branch, so it was
never particularly practical for extended development.
Tweaked by tabbott to move most of the content into the remote
development documentation, both for brevity in the main docs as well
as clarity.
Fixes#10694.
This commit helps reduce clutter on the navigation sidebar.
Creates new directories and moves relevant files into them.
Modifies index.rst, symlinks, and image paths accordingly.
This commit also enables expandable/collapsible navigation items,
renames files in docs/development and docs/production,
modifies /tools/test-documentation so that it overrides a theme setting,
Also updates links to other docs, file paths in the codebase that point
to developer documents, and files that should be excluded from lint tests.
Note that this commit does not update direct links to
zulip.readthedocs.io in the codebase; those will be resolved in an
upcoming follow-up commit (it'll be easier to verify all the links
once this is merged and ReadTheDocs is updated).
