This reduces our dependency on message_list code (via
message_util), and it makes moving streams/topics and
deleting messages more performant.
For every single message that was being updated or
deleted, the previous code was basically re-computing
lots of things, including having to iterate through
every message in memory to find the messages matching
your topic.
Now everything basically happens in O(1) time.
The only O(N) computation is that we now lazily
re-compute the max message id every time you need it
for typeahead logic, and then we cache it for
subsequent use. The N here is the number of messages
that the particular sender has sent to the particular
stream/topic combination, so it should always be quite
small, except for certain spammy bots.
Once the max has been calculated, the common operation
of adding a message doesn't invalidate our cached
value. We only invalidate the cache on deletes.
The main change that we make here from a data
standpoint is that we just keep track of all
message_ids for all senders. The storage overhead here
should be negligible. By keeping track of our own
messages, we don't have to punt to other code for
update/delete situations.
There is similar code in recent_topics that I think can
be improved in similar ways, and it would allow us to
eliminate functions like this one:

This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.
This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

This introduces the make_stream_message()
helper to avoid all the strange
`messages[0] === message1` confusion.
We also clear data explicitly at the beginning
of the test.
It's still a messy test.
ES and TypeScript modules are strict by default and don’t need this
directive. ESLint will remind us to add it to new CommonJS files and
remove it from ES and TypeScript modules.

Delete stored topic data in `recent_senders` and `recent_topics`
about the message's topics and re-render them. The process is similar
to topic editing. See `recent_senders.process_topic_edit` for
logical details.
* Remove old topic and reprocess both old and new topic to ensure
that we are correctly storing the last_msg_id of users in the
topic. Also, Handle topic's stream (& topic) edit updates.
* Add function to get all messages in a topic in message_utils.js.
* Send topic edit event to recent_senders.
* Add func get sorted list of recent_senders to topic.
The function will be useful to handle topic edits in Recent Topic UI.
We now treat util like a leaf module and
use "require" to import it everywhere it's used.
An earlier version of this commit moved
util into our "shared" library, but we
decided to wait on that. Once we're ready
to do that, we should only need to do a
simple search/replace on various
require/zrequire statements plus a small
tweak to one of the custom linter checks.
It turns out we don't really need util.js
for our most immediate code-sharing goal,
which is to reuse our markdown code on
mobile. There's a little bit of cleanup
still remaining to break the dependency,
but it's minor.
The util module still calls the global
blueslip module in one place, but that
code is about to be removed in the next
few commits.
I am pretty confident that once we start
sharing things like the typeahead code
more aggressively, we'll start having
dependencies on util. The module is barely
more than 300 lines long, so we'll probably
just move the whole thing into shared
rather than break it apart. Also, we
can continue to nibble away at the
cruftier parts of the module.
We have ~5 years of proof that we'll probably never
extend Dict with more options.
Breaking the classes into makes both a little faster
(no options to check), and we remove some options
in FoldDict that are never used (from/from_array).
A possible next step is to fine-tune the Dict to use
Map internally.
Note that the TypeScript types for FoldDict are now
more specific (requiring string keys). Of course,
this isn't really enforced until we convert other
modules to TS.
This commit was originally automatically generated using `tools/lint
--only=eslint --fix`. It was then modified by tabbott to contain only
changes to a set of files that are unlikely to result in significant
merge conflicts with any open pull request, excluding about 20 files.
His plan is to merge the remaining changes with more precise care,
potentially involving merging parts of conflicting pull requests
before running the `eslint --fix` operation.

With webpack, variables declared in each file are already file-local
(Global variables need to be explicitly exported), so these IIFEs are
no longer needed.

This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.
It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.
However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.
So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.
If both users haven't posted in the current topic, then
as a second order sort, check which user has posted first
in the stream as a whole.
Fixes part of #5956; we still need to sort by sending in the
organization.
It appears that a regression introduced in
3f60074c33 caused undefined to be passed
as the subject to the recent_senders library much more often; this
fixing that, and makes the library handle such cases reasonably
without an exception regardless.
This was causing a huge number of "Tried to call a Dict method with an
undefined key." exceptions.
In recent_senders module, added a data structure to hold timestamps of
users' latest message in a topic. Also added a function to compare 2
users based on above timestamp. Added a function to process messages for
the data structure and a call in add_message_metadata. Also added node
tests for insertion of data into recent_senders.senders.
