We no longer use tsearch_extras, and the camo patch is irrelevant on
systemd systems (Xenial and newer). So we no longer need to

it means we no longer need to ship custom apt packages at all.

When we add Plus, the first sentence should change to "Available on Zulip
Standard and Plus".
I copied the styling of .tip out of expediency, but it's also possible that
long term we'll want only 1 tip-like box styling.
The hover styling is a bit random, but I tried to copy other hover styles I
found in settings.scss.
Note that this renames .upgrade_realm_plan_type_suggestion to .upgrade-tip.

As of commit cff40c557b (#9300), these
files are no longer served directly to the browser. Disentangle them
from the static asset pipeline so we can refactor it without worrying
about them.

translation data via hash-naming in our release tarballs.

A function was written in `test_fixtures.py` to drop a test database
template if the corresponding database id doesn't belong to a file.
Alongside this fact, every file that is written is removed after 60
minutes. Meaning any potential database template can never exist
longer than one hour.
This follow-up work was added to deal with the potential race
conditions when running `test-backend`. Ensuring that all templates
are properly dealt with.
Essentially rewritten by tabbott for cleanliness.
Fixes the remainder of #12426.
The test-backend parallel test runner system doesn't actually use the
zulip_test database; instead, it creates its own databases off the
zulip_test_template database.
We were accidentally running `tools/generate_fixtures` even when there
are no changes, because this function is shared with the
tools/lib/test_server.py codebase, which needs us to do the work of
creating a test database for it off the zulip_test_template database.
Fixing this saves about 1.5s / 4s of the runtime of a single test.
It was discovered that the '.eslintcache' file was causing eslint to
throw a TypeError after a recent update/addition to the dependencies.
It makes sense to remove this file as part of the provisioning process
to avoid such exceptions.
activate_this.py has always documented that it should be exec()ed with
locals = globals, and in virtualenv 16.0.0 it raises a NameError
otherwise.
As a simplified demonstration of the weird things that can go wrong
when locals ≠ globals:
>>> exec('a = 1; print([a])', {}, {})
[1]
>>> exec('a = 1; print([a for b in [1]])', {}, {})
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
File "<string>", line 1, in <listcomp>
NameError: name 'a' is not defined
>>> exec('a = 1; print([a for b in [1]])', {})
[1]
Top-level assignments go into locals, but from inside a new scope like
a list comprehension, they’re read out of globals, which doesn’t work.

We were already correctly including libssl-dev in Zulip's dependencies
in development environment provisioning, but (at least now) it's
needed to build certain Python packages like pycurl when building a
Zulip virtualenv in production. I haven't investigated why we didn't
need this on Ubuntu, but one possible reason would be that some other
library in our dependencies list happens to depend on it on Ubuntu.
We fix this by moving the dependency over to the shared
VENV_DEPENDENCIES list.

'\x1b' and '\n'.

This results in a significant optimization in the performance of
re-provisioning Zulip if all that you're doing is rebasing onto a
newer version of master (which just adds new migrations).
The change carries some risk of generating unpleasant-to-debug
situations, because if we merge a buggy migration and then later fix
it, some clients may not have a properly migrated database (and also,
this changes how populate_db commutes with migrations). But it seems
worth it, given how much time is currently wasted by not having this.
Fixes: #9512.
In this commit we are adding run_generate_fixtures_if_required,
a new function which is meant to de-duplicate a bit of code
between test-server and test-backend which is essentially
responsible for rebuilding the test database if that was required.
In this commit we are essentially just refactoring the function
is_template_database_current to be called template_database_status
and adjusting the return values accordingly.
This is essentially a preparatory commit for the upcoming commits
which will essentially enable us to not throw away entire DB and
rebuild from scratch if only running migrations could do the job.
This improves the performance of these operations, by saving a ~50ms
Python process startup. While not a major performance improvement, it
seems worth it, given how often these commands get run.

We fix the issue of check-templates spitting out diff between
expected and found indentation of a file before mentioning the

and then the actual diff between expected and found file indentation.

Now that the Markdown extension defined in
zerver/lib/bugdown/api_generate_examples depended on code in the
tools/lib/* directory, it caused the production tests to fail since
the tools/ directory wouldn't exist in a production environment.
This commit uses the Markdown extension defined in
zerver/lib/bugdown/api_generate_example to generate the example
fixture and code example, so that both are tested in
tools/lib/api_tests.
For now, this does nothing in a production environment, but it should
simplify the process of doing testing on the Thumbor implementation,
by integrating a lot of dependency management logic.
This isn't really the right way to do this -- commit
dcd80e665 "travis/setup-backend: Remove the '--travis' flag"
took us in the wrong direction by introducing more magic, deeper in
the stack.
But it's the same way we do it for Travis. For now, just copy that.
[Thanks to hackerkid for cleaning up my original crude hack.]
At this point if we were accidentally using `/srv/zulip-venv` for
anything, we'd have run into it by now. So just drop the bit of
historical logic that we had to ensure that.
This reverts commit 66261f1cc. See parent commit for reason; here,
provision worked but `tools/run-dev.py` would give errors.
We need to figure out a test that reproduces these issues, then make a
version of these changes that keeps that test working, before we
re-merge them.
This prevents the caches in /srv from growing to fill up the disk --
e.g., on my laptop after 6 months of regular development the venv cache
was 12G and the NPM cache 5G, making them by far the largest disk hogs
on the machine.
It costs about 0.4s, apart from any time spent actually removing
things. This is a little annoyingly slow to be adding to every
provision, and seems like it could be optimized, but I think already
worth it as is.
The CSS linter was pretty hard to reason about. It was
pretty flexible about certain things, but then it would
prevent seemingly innocuous code from getting checked in.
This commit overhauls the pretty-printer to be more composable,
where every object in the AST knows how to render itself. It
also cleans up a little bit of the pre_fluff/post_fluff logic
in the parser itself, so comments are more likely to be "attached"
to the AST node that make sense.
The linter is actually a bit more finicky about newlines, but
this is mostly a good thing, as most of the variations before
this commit were pretty arbitrary.
This should mean that maintaining two Zulip development environments
using the same Git checkout no longer has caching problems keeping
track of the migration status.
This didn't work at all when one did a `vagrant destroy` and then
`vagrant up`, because the cache state would be preserved even though
the machine is gone.
Fixes#5981.
Tweaked by tabbott to not remove it from lister.py, linter_lib, and
friends, since those are intended to support both Python 2 and 3
(we're planning to extract them from the repository).
This commit implements support for copying over static files
for all bots in the zulip_bots package to
static/generated/bots/ during provisioning. This directory
isn't tracked by Git. This allows us to have access to files
stored in an arbitrary zulip_bots package directory somewhere
on the system. For now, logo.* and doc.md files are copied over.
This commit should act as a starting point for extending our
macro-based Markdown framework to our bots/API packages'
documentation and eventually rendering these static files
alongside our webhooks' documentation.
This causes `upgrade-zulip-from-git`, as well as a no-option run of
`tools/build-release-tarball`, to produce a Zulip install running
Python 3, rather than Python 2. In particular this means that the
virtualenv we create, in which all application code runs, is Python 3.
One shebang line, on `zulip-ec2-configure-interfaces`, explicitly
keeps Python 2, and at least one external ops script, `wal-e`, also
still runs on Python 2. See discussion on the respective previous
commits that made those explicit. There may also be some other
third-party scripts we use, outside of this source tree and running
outside our virtualenv, that still run on Python 2.
We can't fully support it until we fix the tsearch_extras availability
issue, but for now, this is an improvement.
Tweaked by tabbott to cover the outstanding tsearch_extras issue.
I think soon we'll put the Python 3 venv at `/srv/zulip-venv` and
make `/srv/zulip-py3-venv` just an alias to that (then remove the
alias too), but for now the old name is helpful for spotting places
that need an update.
The `/srv/zulip-venv` name still appears in codepaths used by Travis
tests.
Apparently, this was missing on Xenial, and we just never noticed
because the package was installed by default on Ubuntu.
It doesn't exist yet in Trusty.
This commit does the following things:
* Instead of using a manual tool for downloading sprite sheets, use
`emoji-datasource` npm package.
* Modify the `build_emoji` script to use sprite sheets from the npm
package.
Bumps PROVISION_VERSION.
Fixes: #4730.
NPM packages should be installed at the beginning of the provisioning
process so that later in the provisioning process if a script requires
any NPM package it can use it. Earlier, we were installing NPM packages
in the last as the installation process can fail due to network issues
but since we now retry in case the installation fails, they can be
installed safely at the beginning of the process as well just like apt
packages.
This brings the total no-op provision time down to around 7.3s!
Tweaked by tabbott to clean up the code, close file descriptions, and
avoid issues with a somehow corrupted file.
Fixes#5185.
Handlebars allows putting tildes (~) by the braces in mustache tags to
strip whitespaces on that side of the tag.
{{#if foo~}}
<p>Bar</p>
{{~/if}}
This way, the linter ignores any potential tilde at the ends of Handlebars
tags so we can use this feature without lint fails.
This reuses the work we did some time ago to avoid regenerating the
test database unnecessarily.
In addition to being a nice convenience for developers (since any
accomulated test data is still available), this also saves about half
the time consumed in a no-op provision.
Fixes#5182.
Moves creating the emoji folder from the provisioning script to

This doesn't completely fix settings responsiveness, but it's a big
step along the way. Outstanding issues include:
1. When switching tabs from settings to organization, it will launch
the first item which is more annoying in this view since it brings you
into that tab. Haven’t decided on an elegant solution to this yet.
2. Sidebar scrolling doesn’t work. I have to restructure how the top
section and bottom sections of content are displayed to fix this.
Likely by enforcing min-height of 100% - bottom height on the top piece.
3. Most of it is actually reasonably responsive but some isn’t, and
should be fixed on a case-by-case.
Modified composebox_typeahead.js to recognize the triple backtick
and tilde for code blocks, and added appropriate typeahead functions
in that file and in typeahead_helper.js.
Additionally, a new file pygments_data.js contains a dictionary of
the supported languages, mapping to relative popularity
rankings. These rankings determine the order of sort of the
languages in the typeahead.
This JavaScript file is actually in static/generated/pygments_data.js, as it
is generated by a Python script, tools/build_pymgents_data.py. This is
so that if Pygments adds support for new languages, the JavaScript file
will be updated appropriately. This python script uses a set of popularity
rankings defined in lang.json.
Corresponding unit tests were also added.

This makes it possible for the Zulip mobile apps to use the normal web
authentication/Oauth flows, so that they can support GitHub, Google,
and other authentication methods we support on the backend, without
needing to write significant custom mobile-app-side code for each
authentication backend.
This PR only provides support for Google auth; a bit more refactoring
would be needed to support this for the GitHub/Social backends.
Modified by tabbott to use the mobile_auth_otp library to protect the
API key.
This code makes the right pane work in "Manage Streams" when
you are editing a stream subscription. It handles basic
functionality (submitting forms, etc.), live updates, and
showing the pane as needed.
Most of the code here was simply moved from subs.js, but some
functions were pulled out of larger functions:
live update:
add_me_to_member_list
update_stream_name
update_stream_description
collapse/show:
collapse
show_sub
We also now export subs.show_subs_pane.
We eventually want stream_edit not to call into subs.js, and
this should be fairly easy--we just need to move some shared
methods to a new module.
Some Handlebars strings contained whitespaces characters at their ends.
With this, such characters are removed, as well as multiple spaces
(like the ones produced by code indentation).
This also includes a couple of fixes that removes spaces that were
intentionally placed before/after the string to translate.
This (1) changes test_server to use the common `check_venv` method and
(2) improves check_venv to provide a clearer error message in the case
that you're inside Vagrant but not in a venv.
Tweaked by tabbott to borrow logic from run_dev.py.
This moves the implementations of error/report/message from
ui.js to ui_report.js. They had been shimmed before, so calling
modules still use the same names to call the functions, but we
no longer need the shims.
While it's sometimes nice to put a few selectors on the same line,
it is generally better to have a consistent way of formatting our
selectors, and most of our code up until now lists them vertically.
This change fixes the linter to enforce one selector per line, and
it cleans up the places in the CSS where we had multiple selectors
on the same line.
The advantages of one-per-line are as followers:
* cleaner diffs
* easier to see when multiple areas of the app may have the
same format
* less likely to go over 80 cols
* makes it more clear where we have deep nesting in the
individual selectors
* makes it easier for our linting tools to enforce
whitespace violations
This also fixed an old bug where we had ".landing_page h2, h4", which
sets "h4" styles outside of the landing page.

2. Receive notification on different streams for each of Slack's
public channels.
Steps to choose between the two options is described in the documentation.
Fixes#3569.
In this commit we modify our CSS parser not only to render the text from
a given CSS tokens produced but also enforce 4 space indentation on it.
Also we enforce some basic rules we would like our CSS to follow such as
* Always have "\n" in between the starting of body({) and body itself
and ending of the body and the closing of body(}).
* Use 4 space indents while having but something within the block
structure ( { .... } ).
* Have single space after ',' in between multiple selectors.
* Have only a single space in between selector and the starting of
block structure ({ ... }) if block structure starts on same line as
of selector.
eg. body {
body content here
}
Notice single space between 'body' and '{'.
Fixes: #1659.
The js-dep-visualizer tool now attempts to find a set of edges
to remove from a call graph that would reduce it to having only
trivial mutual dependencies, and it produces a roadmap of the
changes that need to happen.
If the tool can't reduce the graph all the way, it still produces
a DOT file that can be visualized.
This fix also has some significant code cleanup.
This adds a report of nodes, handles some errors better, adds
some helpful output, cleans up some abspath calls, and
updates which modules and/or dependencies we temporarily are
ignoring for the report.
In this commit we add the ability of recognizing comments in
handlebar and Jinja2 templates to the template parser. This
fixes issue of template parser picking up code tags which are
commented out in files.
Also we fix the problem of too much deep nesting in the Jinja2
logic statement. Now only nested Jinja2 logic statements will get
a deeper indentation level. With this another fix was introduced
relating with the tags before a nested handlebar or django tag getting
wrong indent.
We also fix the issue with wrong offsets with closing tags in
cases if they were not matching indent level of the starting
tag intially.
Also we also start to ignore any tags occuring in between 'pre'
tags for deeper indent levels. As well we start to filter out django
non block tags from getting deeper indent level.
Change applies to both subdomains and non-subdomains case, though we use
just the EXTERNAL_HOST in the non-subdomains case if there is only 1 realm.
Fixes#3903.
In this commit we are modifying pretty print tool to support
Django and html singleton tags. For Addition of html singleton
tags template parser was modified to emit psudeo
html singleton end tags to accompany html singleton tags and
token class was updated to have line_span field.
In this commit we improve the way errors are handled in our
template parser and thus improving the displayed messages in
case of errors. Eg. Errors in case of unbalanced quotes now
makes more sense displaying line and column information
including line where error might be sourced.
In This commit we extend the work being done by @showell in PR#1778
to develop a tool to pretty print html and our handlebar templates
in order to enforce our style convention of 4 Space indentation in
templates.
This commit introduces following changes:
* Fix Py3 Compatibility.
* Add ability to prettify in cases when html tags are not the
starting of a line and addition of test cases for it.
* Add ability to lint handlebar tags and add test cases for it.
* Add {{else}} as special case of indent.
* Add test cases in general to testing new tool.
@showell Helped me throughout and reviewed this commit.
Fixes#1778
This helps make the Zulip development environment somewhat more robust
to new contributors, since it will give them a nice warning if they
try running any of our development tools outside the Zulip virtualenv.
Fixes#3468.
This is a fairly major overhaul of the CSS parser to support
line numbers in error messages.
Basically, instead of passing "slices" of tokens around, we pass
indexes into the token arrays to all of our sub-parsers, which
allows them to have access to previous tokens in certain cases.
This is particularly important for errors where stuff is missing
(vs. being wrong).
In testing this out I found a few more places to catch errors.
Before this commit, provisioning was done by executing provision.py,
which printed the log directly to stdout, making debugging harder.
This commit creates a wrapper bash script 'provision' in tools, which
calls 'zulip/scripts/tools/provision_vm.py' (the new location of
provision.py) and prints all the output to
'zulip/var/log/zulip/zulip_provision.log' via 'tee'.
Travis tests and docs have been modified accordingly.
This new module abstracts the setting up of a test
server for tests to run, pulling existing code from
casper and paving the way for API tests in the future.
In this commit we enhance our current template linter to detect
duplicate ids and report them during lint checks. html_branches.py
was topped up with a new function build_id_dict for the purpose.
Also the get_tag_info function in same file was updated to parse
ids and classes more robustly in cases of template variables.
split_for_id_and_class function was added to serve this purpose.
Unit tests for both the functions were created under
tests/test_html_branches. Also a directory under tests called
test_template_data was created to hold templates for testing under
newly created functionality.
check_templates was modified to print to console any duplicates
detected.
showell reviewed my commit and helped me out.
Fixes#2950.
Previously, we got the following as a part of the output when running
`tools/run-dev.py` without provisioning:
It looks like you checked out a branch that has added
dependencies beyond what you last provisioned. Your tests
are likely to fail until you add dependencies by provisioning.
which is a bit confusing.
This is a major change to the /#subscriptions page, converting it to
by a side-by-side list of streams and their settings in an overlay.
There are no new features added/removed, but it's a huge changeset,
because it replaces the old navigation logic and moves the stream
creation modal to appear in the right side of this overlay.
This adds an event listener (by way of delegation) to the
.message_inline_image elements that pops up the overlay and hides it
when the overlay exit is clicked.
Fixes#654.
Because of some recent changes to the tokenizer, we no longer
need to call is_special_html_tag() to filter out special tags.
I also tried to make the start/end logic for pushing/popping
the stack more obvious.
This code is not directly related to the template parser, so it
can safely live in its own file.
The only significant change to the code is to the signature of
`html_branches` so that it can be called without requiring a file.
Since it's only used in html_grep, that has been updated to reflect
this change.
Fixes: #1774.
Fixed IndexError when there is only zero or more whitespace characters
between < and >. (str.split() will return an empty list in this case, which
means there is no index 0.)
* Replace generic Exception with TemplateParserException.
* Add tests to cover many of the uncovered lines in
tools/lib/template_parser.py.
* Add an exclusion line to the naïve pattern for checking for missing
tuples in format strings, to keep the linter happy.
This starts to address 1533. I still think the </p> tags
should be on their own line lined up with the start tag,
so the linter won't let through the specific example
shown in the ticket.
The find-add-class tool, when in lint mode, verifies that we can
understand all calls to addClass from our JS code.
When in non-lint mode, i.e. verbose mode, the tool prints out a
list of tuples of (fn, class) that we can use as we wish in other
tools.
We were ignoring singleton tags like "input" tags in
html-grep. This was an artifact of our tokenizer originally
being built to check indentation of templates, for which
singleton tags had been a distraction. This fix actually cleans up
the template checking logic as well, since it can now rely
on the tokenizer to classify special tags and singleton tags.
The tokenizer is more complete and more specific.
