Continuing the efforts to reduce dom trashing from the previous
commits, here we remove the third forced reflow by reordering the call
to $(".top-messages-logo").show() via narrow.reset_ui_state(), such
that it happens before the other DOM writes in
recent_topics_ui.hide().
Tweaked by tabbott to avoid adding an unnecessary if/else statement
around recent_topics_ui.hide.
This is a prep commit towards pushing the reset_ui_state calls upwards
into recent_topics_ui, in order to prevent a forced reflow. One side
effect of this change is that we add a call to
`narrow_banner.hide_empty_narrow_message()` from `narrow.activate()`.
This likely has no visible effect, in that the message list rendering
process would end up setting the narrow_banner state correctly, but
logically it could in the future avoid a banner from a stale banner
incorrectly appearing before we've rendered the current view.
This is a prep commit towards extracting a reset_ui_state function
which we can call from here, narrow.activate(), recent_topics.show()
and recent_topics.hide().
We want that function because it will enables us to prevent a forced
reflow when navigating from recent_topics to stream: xyz.
This shortcut now renarrows to an empty topic, rather than to the
stream, as long as the topic input is nonempty.
This was debated in the original implementation of this feature:
https://github.com/zulip/zulip/pull/9511#discussion_r190323319
Having seen the experience in practice, the current behavior is
surprising and we should migrate to the other option originally
considered. In particular, the argument that "narrowing to the stream
would still tell you the topic is empty" turns out to be inaccurate,
since the history within the stream may not be in the most recent
messages in the stream.
Fixes#19122.
We split recent_topics module into recent_topics_(ui + data + util).
This allows us to reduce cyclical dependencies which were
created due to large list of imports in recent topics. Also, this
refactor on its own makes sense.
The default label for empty narrows depends on whether it's a
stream/topic narrow or a PMs narrow.
We leave some default text in compose.hbs for reply label
because it take some time for the js to display the
correct label.
This data structure has never been one that we actually render into
the DOM; instead, its role is to support clicking into view that
contain muted streams and topics quickly.
This downgrade makes that situation much more explicit, and is also
useful refactoring to help simpify the upcoming changes in #16746.

This is a mostly verbatim extraction.
I re-phrased one line of code to work around a lint
false alarm. (Look for `preamble` in the diff.)
There are about 8 lines missing coverage here, so
the new module might be a good candidate to get
100% line coverage on.
Before this change, you would need to remove 74
edges from our dependency graph to make it
acyclic. Now it's 72.
This mainly extracts a new module called
browser_history. It has much fewer dependencies
than hashchange.js, so any modules that just
need the smaller API from browser_history now
have fewer transitive dependencies.
Here are some details:
* Move is_overlay_hash to hash_util.
* Rename hashchange.update_browser_history to
brower_history.update
* Move go_to_location verbatim.
* Remove unused argument for exit_overlay.
* Introduce helper functions:
* old_hash()
* set_hash_before_overlay()
* save_old_hash()
We now have 100% line coverage on the extracted
code.
