sahil839 d9b7228444 streams: Add frontend to set/update message_retention_days of a stream.
This commit adds frontend support for setting and updating message
retention days of a stream from stream settings.

Message retention days can be changed from stream privacy modal of the
stream and can be set from stream_creation_form while creating streams.

Only admins can create streams with message_retention_days value other
than realm_default.

This commit also contains relevant changes to docs.

YashRE42 7ea60ea1ab filter: Store reference to `_sub` instead of `_stream_params`.
In commit 4f6377d493 we added
`_stream_params` as a way of storing attributes such as stream name
and stream privacy, this involved adding a few calls within functions
that updated these values (in order to maintain consistency).

This commit replaces `_stream_params` with an always consistent `_sub`
object and removes unnecessary `_stream_params` related code. Once the
`_sub` object is available, calls to `stream_data` may be considered
suspicious as they can often be avoided by just picking the desired
attribute off of the `_sub` object.

YashRE42 e389129f34 subs: Call `filter.fix_stream_params` when updating stream name.
Previously the navbar did not live update the stream name correctly.

The correct behaviour was blocked on the `_stream_name` prop on the
filter object. The original purpose for maintaining this prop was
convenience, to reduce calls to `subs`, however, it would become
inconsistent with the value from `subs` on stream rename.

In this commit we add a call to `filter.fix_stream_params` in
`subs.update_stream_name`. This fixes live rerendering in the navbar,
despite the fact that searchbox in the nav (and the filter object via
`filter.operands("stream")[0]`) will still have the old name.

This is a slightly hacky way of masking some of the problems in the
Filter object. However, it should make do until we migrate to a stream
ID based state there.

Fixes: #14728.

YashRE42 bb6ce47c33 navbar: Live update icon for stream privacy changes.
Prior to this commit the icon in the navbar didn't live update to
reflect changes in stream privacy.

Here, we add a call to `tab_bar.render_title_area` in
`subs.update_stream_privacy()`, to enable live updates on the icon.

YashRE42 d496304caa subs: Call `filter.fix_stream_params` when updating stream privacy.
The navbar currently does not live update the stream icon correctly
for changes in stream privacy.

One place where the correct behaviour gets blocked is on the
`_is_stream_private` prop in the filter object. We keep props such as
this for convenience, to reduce calls to `subs`, however, this prop
becomes inconsistent with the value we get from `subs` when the stream
privacy is updated.

In this commit we add a call to `filter.fix_stream_params` in
`subs.update_stream_privacy`. This change does not fix the live
rerendering in the navbar because we don't call redraw yet, but
it's a prep commit to towards that goal

YashRE42 b292c30d6a subs: Move comment about live update for stream names in navbar.
A comment about the difficulties relating to live updating stream
names in the navbar was incorrectly placed within the function for
live updating stream descriptions in

This moves the comment to the right place.

YashRE42 023187b3f1 navbar: Switch live update strategy to just be a render call.
It's safer and cleaner to simply just rerender the entire navbar for
small updates like these since they're rare events. Given that we're
not doing anything unique in such updates, it's best if we just call
".render_tab_bar" wherever required instead of having several
functions in tab_bar.js which do exactly that. This also sets a good
precedence of what to do for stream privacy and subscriber count live
update.

However, we can't easily fix the "subs.update_stream_name" code path
because of how the Filter objects represent the stream by name, not be
ID. Given that the above would be out of scope for this change, it's
left as a TODO.

sahil839 da4f80caaa subs: Update hash when unsubscribing from stream settings UI.
Previously, the unsubscribe logic just called
exports.show_subs_pane.nothing_selected() if one had been viewing the
edit UI for a stream that the user just unsubscribed from, which
clears the selection, but didn't update the hash or do other cleanup
logic.

We should instead be calling stream_edit.open_edit_panel_empty(),
which is the appropriate function for this purpose (and has
exports.show_subs_pane.nothing_selected as a subroutine).

clarammdantas 3b4c49e0e2 subs.js: Change how to check if the subscribed tab is active.
Before we used a selector to check whether the "Subscribed" tab
is active or not. The problem is that if a new sibling of the tab
switcher is inserted in the DOM and uses the same classes as the
"Subscribed" and "All Streams" button do, the selector can get
the sibling element instead the tab button.
To avoid that, we are using a variable that tracks the current
active tab instead of using the selector.

clarammdantas 77195f94c1 stream_settings: Don't remove stream_row if in "All Streams" tab.
If you were on "All Streams" tab and unsubscribed to a private
stream, that stream row would momentarily disappear. If you
click again on "All Streams" button, it would appear again.

The problem was that the selector was finding two elements
instead of just the tab element. To solve this we used a more
specific selector to make sure we are getting the Subscribed
tab only.

Pranav 3b71e0dbfb stream settings: Fix UI feedback on clicking checkbox to subscribe.
Before this change, on clicking a checkbox to toggle subscription to a
stream no UI feedback was shown and users could toggle the checkbox
multiple times to send multiple requests causing bugs. This commit
initializes a spinner on clicking the checkbox, to provide a UI feedback
to the user. This commit also disables the checkbox once a request for
subscription has been sent and re-enables the checkbox only after a
response.

This change has been accomplished by introducing a div to display the
spinner in subscription.hbs. The corresponding styles for the spinner
have been added in subscriptions.scss. The ajaxSubscribe &
ajaxUnsubscribe functions in subs.js have been updated to show & hide
the spinners for the time the request is in process. An additional
parameter, the concerned stream object is passed to these functions(
through the sub_or_unsub function) to get the location where the spinner
is to be displayed. Finally, the checkbox click handler is updated to
support these changes.

The testing for this has been done by adding a wait of 2 secs in
actions.py for the response. This gives sufficient time to test the
working manually. Also, for error cases an error has been sent from
action.py and the behaviour has been manually observed.

Anders Kaseorg 68cfcd6446 CVE-2020-9444: Prevent reverse tabnabbing attacks.
While we could fix this issue by changing the markdown processor,
doing so is not a robust solution, because even a momentary bug in the
markdown processor could allow cached messages that do not follow our
security policy.

This change ensures that even if our markdown processor has bugs that
result in rendered content that does not properly follow our policy of
using rel="noopener noreferrer" on links, we'll still do something
reasonable.

Steve Howell a81fd786f5 refactor: Use get_default_stream_ids() in settings.
We now use the up-to-date info from stream_data
to hydrate the default stream ids. All we need
here in the template is `invite_only` and `name`.

Since we are no longer using data from `page_params`,
we can remove `maybe_update_realm_default_stream_name`.
(If you are wondering if we still get live updates,
we get that via a more upstream call to
update_default_streams_table in the event
dispatching codepath.)

Ryan Rehman 174b2abcfd settings: Migrate to stream_post_policy structure.
This commit includes a new `stream_post_policy` setting,
by replacing the `is_announcement_only` field from the Stream model,
which is done by mirroring the structure of the existing
`create_stream_policy`.

It includes the necessary schema and database migrations to migrate
the is_announcement_only boolean field to stream_post_policy,
a smallPositiveInteger field similar to many other settings.

This change is done to allow organization administrators to restrict
new members from creating and posting to a stream. However, this does
not affect admins who are new members.

With many tweaks by tabbott to documentation under /help, etc.

Steve Howell 0aa9decd86 blueslip: Add feature to time common operations.
This is relatively unobtrusive, and we don't send
anything to the server.

But any user can now enter blueslip.timings in the
console to see a map of how long things take in
milliseconds. We only record one timing per
event label (i.e. the most recent).

It's pretty easy to test this by just clicking
around. For 300 users/streams most things are
fast except for:

    - initialize_everything
    - manage streams (render_subscriptions)

Both do lots of nontrivial work, although
"manage streams" is a bit surprising, since
we're only measuring how long to build the
HTML from the templates (whereas the real
time is probably browser rendering costs).

joaomcarvalho cd2c68c778 stream settings: Fix initialization of main toggler state.
The "Stream settings" UI was always intended to be initialized in the
"Subscribed" tab when opened not through navigation that explicitly
aims to via "All streams". We had implemented that through how the UI
is rendered as well as the internal state tracking variable
`subscribed_only`, which was initialized to `true`.

The bug was that we didn't reset that to `true` when re-opening
"Stream settings" via a code path that calls `setup_page` (e.g. via
the menus on the left sidebar).

Ths fixes a bug where the stream-list in the stream settings would
list all streams but would show the 'Subscribed' label after
navigating to "All streams", closing "Manage streams", and then
reopening it.

Steve Howell 82e453d9fe ui: Fix scrollbar regressions.
In between releases, the following commit introduced
a bug where we agressively scroll to the top every
place we call `ui.update_scrollbar`:

    092b73d0b7

The main symptoms were that the left and right sidebars
would go to the top for things like selecting a topic,
getting activity updates from the server, and resizing
the window. It was very jarring.

The recent commit looked innocuous--the root of the problem
was the original API expressed an intent to scroll to the
top, but didn't actually do it, so it was a bug in hiding.

There are **some** occasions where it's actually appropriate
to scroll to the top, mostly around search filtering, and
in those places we now call the new `ui.reset_scrollbar`
function.

This is a bit of an emergency fix, so particularly with
the settings stuff, we may get more reports of glitches here.

The important thing here is that you almost never want to
reset the scrollTop for sidebars.

Steve Howell 625388ccf0 refactor: Call stream_data.initialize() more directly.
This function used to be called initialize_from_page_params(),
and we called it indirectly through `subs.js`.

Now we call it directly from `ui_init.js`, which gives us a
bit more control over how things are initialized. In fact,
this sets us up for the next commit, where I fix a recent
regression I introduced.

Steve Howell b4d5c7e68a hashchange: Avoid double-rendering Subscribed/All tabs.
Before this commit, we would sometimes have
the toggler handle clicking or arrowing to
the All tab, but then also rewrite the hash
which caused us to re-process the event.

Now we only call update_browser_history()
in the callback handler from the toggle widget.

There's a bit of refactoring to make this happen,
but the call stacks end up being this:

    call toggler.goto(...)
        # callback is dispatched
            call subs.switch_stream_tab
                actually_filter_streams

Steve Howell bea328b8b6 refactor: Split out functions for opening edit panel.
While they can share some code, opening the edit panel

case, you don't have to pass in a bogus node that just
gets ignored.

Steve Howell 43f25eb4a5 Clean up code to open "Create stream" panel.
This fixes a bug where hitting the "n" hotkey was
causing double work related to the hashchange system.

The code is now organized like this:

    do_open_create_stream() does the GUI piece

We call the above directly for hash changes.

For in-app actions, whether clicks or hotkeys,
    we call open_create_stream(), which delegates
most of the work to do_open_create_stream() but
    also updates the hash.

When you unsubscribe a stream by clicking on the

away, but we also don't need it to stay around
once you start searching for new streams.

Note from Tim: This commit removes some complex code that was just a
workaround for the fact that this widget used to automatically
re-filter immediately after clicking to unsubscribe a user.

Since we've since fixed that original issue, we don't need this.

Sampriti Panda bcab6748ff subs: Remove default selected tab in subscriptions modal.
Earlier, on opening the subs modal, the "Subscribed" tab would be selected
by default when the components.toggle was created for tab switching.
This would change the hash to `#streams/subscribed`, and then extra work had
to be done to change it back to `#streams/all` leading to a longer open times.

With this change, `#streams` and `#streams/subscribed` both take you to
the "Subscribed Tab", and `#streams/all` takes you directly to
the "All Streams" tab.

Steve Howell 5c4d44bf3d refactor: Extract subs.get_stream_id_buckets().
This pulls the essential bucketing/sorting logic out
of filter_table().

The diff isn't quite as clean as I'd like, but some
of the code that got added back to filter_table() can be
eliminated in the future. Basically, all the stuff
related to hidden ids can just be zapped if we go
to an approach of just re-building the DOM cleanly
whenever our filters change.

Steve Howell 95d136ca5e Extract search_util.js module.
We probably should have done this a while ago, even
though these functions are pretty tiny. The goal here
is to make it easier to have more consistent search
semantics.

Our first use case is subs.js. In this case we
are able to decouple a bit of generic string
matching from the subs-specific code.
2018-07-30 11:25:32 -07:00
Steve Howell 064d0f3c89 Extract stream_data.sort_for_stream_settings().
We move some data code from subs.js to stream_data.js.

It's not clear we have been using the optimal sort for
dealing with locales, but this change preserves the
current behavior. The only subtle change here is that
we look up subs using a Dict now instead of a plain
JS object.

Steve Howell 8aa3eebe70 refactor: Render Stream Settings in two steps.
We now render the "skin" part of "Stream Settings" before
adding in the actual streams. The new function
populate_stream_settings_left_panel() takes care of adding
the streams. It uses a new template called
`subscriptions.handlebars`.

Splitting out this function will give us more flexibility
for various improvements.

First, we can decide to render the list after we open the
overlay, just to avoid the problem that users don't know why
the modal's opening. (And we could add a loader spinner as
needed.)

Second, we can improve our filter features so that we do
filtering in the data instead of moving DOM rows around,
which is expensive.

Third, we can eventually introduce progressive rendering.

Finally, having the function broken out will make profiling
more precise about where bottlenecks exist.

Cynthia Lin 84a977967b subs: Fix regression in Filter streams input focus during modal opening.
This behavior was originally implemented in commit 6993f89, but due to not

focused after the input was focused, leading to the input's loss of focus.

Armaan Ahluwalia 6d255efe4c app: Prepare JS files for consumption by webpack.
This commit prepares the frontend code to be consumed by webpack.

It is a hack: In theory, modules should be declaring and importing the
modules they depend on and the globals they expose directly.

However, that requires significant per-module work, which we don't
really want to block moving our toolchain to webpack on.

So we expose the modules by setting window.varName = varName; as
needed in the js files.

Steve Howell 9eb3bdaf6c page load: Make initializations more explicit.
We now initialize most modules in ui_init.js, which
isn't the perfect place to do it, but at least now
we have a mostly consolidated entry point.

All the new foo.initialize() methods introduced in
this module run the same order relative to each
other as before this commit. (I did some console
logging with a hacked version of the program to
get the order right.) They happen a bit later than
before, though.

A couple modules still have the `$(function() {`
idiom for miscellaneous reasons:

archive - is a different bundle
       common - used elsewhere
       list_render - non-standard code style
       scroll_bar - no exports
       setup - probably special?
       socket - $(function () is nested!
       transmit - coupled to socket
       translations - i18n is a bigger problem
       ui_init - this bootstraps everything

We now have components.toggle simply return an object, without
putting the object into a lookup table. The consumers of the
objects have all been changed to just store the object in their
own module scope.

The diff is a bit hard to read here, but it's mostly de-denting
code and removing these things:

        - we don't have opts.name
        - we don't have __toggle.lookup
        - we don't have keys
        - we don't create a sibling object to the prototype object

by warning instead of crashing.

Steve Howell 9319da8e1d stream settings: Fix bug with Subscribed/All.
Before this commit, this sequence would lead to errors:

        * Open streams page via the gear menu.
        * Go to "All" tab.
        * Leave streams settings.
        * Re-open stream settings via the gear menu.

After doing this, the tab would show "Subscribed" but the list
would be of all messages.

Now we explicitly goto the first tab.

I added a long comment explaining how subs.js contributed
to this bug--in short, we re-build the widget instead of just
re-opening this.

We may also want the toggle component to simply default the
initial tab to the first tab.

Steve Howell 4216b81e93 Fix Subscribed/All Streams bug.
We've had a longstanding bug where the streams settings code
was getting an i18n'ed value in the middle of a callback from

non-English sites. And then a recent cleanup of the toggle

getting stale state, so English sites broke too.

This fix just simplifies everything by using the key that
comes into our callback to determine whether we filter or not.

Tim Abbott 1e453981a3 stream settings: Fix exceptions when rerendering subscribers.
If another user subscribed to or unsubscribed from a stream while the
current user was not subscribed, we previously would attempt to
rerender the subscriber counts for that stream, even though they
weren't rendered at all in the first place; this would trigger
blueslip errors from the expectOne() check in this function.

Fixes #8720.

Tim Abbott 12db219305 stream settings: Fix subscriber counts when creating invite-only streams.
Previously, when creating an invite-only stream, the subscriber counts
were not being rendered properly, in that the "create" event for the
stream had the user not yet subscribed (so can_add_subscribers was
false), and then the rerendering we did when the user susbcribed just
tried to update the number, not actually rerender the thing.

YJDave e50cedfcb8 stream settings: Remove stream from subscribed list immediately on unsub.
When user click on unsubscribe button, to unsubscribe from private stream
immediately remove unsubscribed stream from all subscribed stream list.
We don't remove public stream immediately on unsubscription, cause
user may want to undo/subscribe back to stream.

YJDave 7cc675cfc1 create stream: On stream create event, add sub to stream lists.
Currently, our stream creation do not add stream list to all
stream list. Only subscription-add event add stream list to
stream list. If public stream is created without acting user
subscribed to stream, then newly created stream is not listed
to all stream list.

On stream creation add sub to all stream list table.

YJDave cc2eb60ca5 stream settings: Fix error in rendering stream members in UI.
To re-render stream members on subscription add or remove event,
we are accessing undefined value "active_stream.stream_id" rather
than "active_stream.id", which resulted in falsey value and our
stream members were not updated unconditionally.

Steve Howell 46a49777c4 Add stream ids to urls for stream-related narrows.
This commit prefixes stream names in urls with stream ids,
so that the urls don't break when we rename streams.

strean name: foo bar.com%
before: #narrow/stream/foo.20bar.2Ecom.25
after: #narrow/stream/20-foo-bar.2Ecom.25

For new realms, everything is simple under the new scheme, since
we just parse out the stream id every time to figure out where
to narrow.

For old realms, any old URLs will still work under the new scheme,
assuming the stream hasn't been renamed (and of course old urls
wouldn't have survived stream renaming in the first place). The one
exception is the hopefully rare case of a stream name starting with
something like "99-" and colliding with another stream whose id is 99.

The way that we enocde the stream name portion of the URL is kind
of unimportant now, since we really only look at the stream id, but
we still want a safe encoding of the name that is mostly human
readable, so we now convert spaces to dashes in the stream name. Also,
we try to ensure more code on both sides (frontend and backend) calls
common functions to do the encoding.

Brock Whittaker 6028e79440 subs: Remove call to go to "all-streams" on stream creation.
This will essentially run the code paths to go from whatever you were
at before to /all and back in the case of /new, which will call the
render function three times (!!), so remove this call because it isn’t
really necessary anyways.

Brock Whittaker ad4e976406 streams: Have new streams list only populate once.
Currently the new streams user list will populate twice when you click
the new stream button (or “+”), because it is triggered once directly
by the button click and then once by the hash change to /new, so we
want to ignore the changes by the hash change.
