This commit adds code to handle guests separately for group
based settings, where guest will only have permission if
that particular setting can be set to "role:everyone" group
even if the guest user is part of the group which is used
for that setting. This is to make sure that guests do not
get permissions for actions that we generally do not want
guests to have.
Currently the guests do not have permission for most of them
except for "Who can delete any message", where guest could
delete a message if the setting was set to a user defined
group with guest being its member. But this commit still
update the code to use the new function for all the settings
as we want to have a consistent pattern of how to check whether
a user has permission for group-based settings.
Renamed event types below in the enum class to use channel instead of
stream.
Event types moved: STREAM_CREATED, STREAM_DEACTIVATED, STREAM_NAME_CHANGED
STREAM_REACTIVATED, STREAM_MESSAGE_RETENTION_DAYS_CHANGED
STREAM_PROPERTY_CHANGED, STREAM_GROUP_BASED_SETTING_CHANGED
When using the sub-expression purely for filtering, and not for
accessing the value in the resultset, .alias() is potentially faster
since it does not pull the value in as well.
Earlier, we were using 'send_event' & 'queue_json_publish' in
'do_send_messages' which can lead to a situation where we enqueue
events but the transaction fails at a later stage.
Events should not be sent until we know we're not rolling back.
Creates an IncompatibleParametersError to be used in cases where
there are two (or more) optional parameters for an endpoint that
are incompatible with each other, e.g. there's a parameter for a
user name and a user ID but only one should be sent in the request
to identify the user.
Documents the error on the /api/rest-error-handling article.
Updates the PATCH users/me/subscriptions/muted_topics endpoint to
use this error when both the stream and stream_id parameters are
passed (note this endpoint is currently deprecated).
Updates translated JsonableError strings that relate to streams
to use channel instead of stream. Separated from other error string
updates as this is a dense area of changes for this rename.
Part of stream to channel rename project.
Generally updates variables that appear in translated strings that use
"stream" to instead use "channel".
Two exceptions are ErrorCode.STREAM_DOES_NOT_EXIST JsonableErrors as
changing the variable would also change the fields returned by these
errors to clients.
Changes to context variables in emails and variables in onboarding
welcome bot messages are addressed in separate commits.
Part of stream to channel rename project.
Adds nullable creator field, containing a reference to the user who
created the stream. When creating a stream, acting user is set as
the creator of the stream. Since API calls to create streams always
have an acting user, this field should always be set when streams
are created using the API.
Because streams can be created with no acting user, this field is
nullable. We try to backfill existing streams using RealmAuditLog table,
but not all streams are guaranteed to have a recorded create log. Thus
this new field is left null when it cannot be backfilled. We also set
this field to null when the creator user is deleted.
This commit moves constants for system group names to a new
"SystemGroups" class so that we can use these group names
in multiple classes in models.py without worrying about the
order of defining them.
Previous behavior-
- Guest did not receive stream creation events for new
web-public streams.
- Guest did not receive peer_add and peer_remove events
for web-public and subscribed public streams.
This commit fixes the behavior to be -
- Guests now receive stream creation events for new
web-public streams.
- Guest now receive peer_add and peer_remove events for
web-public and subscribed public streams.
This commit extracts the code which queries the required streams
to a new function "get_user_streams". The new functions returns
the list of "Stream" object and not dictionaries and then
do_get_streams function converts it into list of dictionaries.
This change is important because we would use the new function
in further commit where we want list of "Stream" objects and
not list of dictionaries.
Instead of having a "realm.is_zephyr_mirror_realm" check for every
get_streams_traffic call, this commit udpates get_streams_traffic to
accept realm as parameter and return "None" for zephyr mirror realm.
We remove bot's subscriptions for private streams to which the
new owner is not subscribed and keep the ones to which the new
owner is subscribed on changing owner.
This commit also changes the code for sending subscription
remove events to use transaction.on_commit since we call
the function inside a transactopn in do_change_bot_owner and
this also requires some changes in tests in test_events.
In this commit, we introduce a new option in the stream creation
UI - a 'Default stream for new users' checkbox. By default, the
checkbox is set to 'off' and is only visible to admins. This
allow admins to easily designate a stream as the default stream
for new users during stream creation.
Fixes#24048.
This commit adds code to pass stream traffic data using
the "stream_weekly_traffic" field in stream objects.
We already include the traffic data in Subscription objects,
but the traffic data does not depend on the user to stream
relationship and is stream-only information, so it's better
to include it in Stream objects. We may remove the traffic
data and other stream information fields for Subscription
objects in future.
This will help clients to correctly display the stream
traffic data in case where client receives a stream
creation event and no subscription event, for an already
existing stream which the user did not have access to before.
This commit changes the code to not use get_client_data
function and instead use `stream_to_dict` function to
get the stream data in a dictionary form. This is a
prep commit add stream traffic data to Stream objects.
This commit adds stream_to_dict method which is same as
Stream.to_dict method as of now. This is a prep commit
to include stream traffic data in stream objects.
Translators benefit from the extra information in the field names, and
need the reordering freedom that isn’t available with multiple
positional fields.

We want to avoid Django going back to the database to
get a realm object that the caller already has.
It's actually currently the case that we often
pre-fetch realm objects when we get stream objects
using get_stream (using a call to select_related() with
no arguments), but that is an expensive operation that
we want to avoid going forward.
This commit prepares us to just fetch slim objects.
I created zerver/lib/default_streams.py, so that various
views and events.py don't have to awkwardly reach into
an "actions" file.
I copied over two functions verbatim from actions/default_streams.py:
get_default_streams_for_realm
streams_to_dicts_sorted
The latter only remains as an internal detail in the new library.
I also created two new helpers:
get_default_stream_ids_for_realm:
This is both faster and easier to use in all the places
where we only need to get a set of default stream ids.
get_default_streams_for_realm_as_dicts:
This just wraps the prior calls to
streams_to_dicts_sorted(get_default_streams_for_realm(...)),
and it doesn't yet address the slowness of the underlying
code.
All the "real" code should be functionally the same.
In a few tests I now use this wrapper instead of
calling get_default_streams_for_realm, just to get
slightly deeper coverage.
This is a prep commit that renames lib functions
so that they can be used while implementing view
for the new endpoint 'POST /user_topics'.
We use a more generic name when removing the visibility_policy of
a topic, i.e., 'access_stream_to_remove_visibility_policy_by_id/name'
instead of 'access_stream_for_unmute_topic_by_id/name' which focused
on removing MUTE from a topic.
This guarantees that the Realm is always non-None when we hit the
codepath is_static_or_current_realm_url via
do_change_stream_description, so that we can properly skip rewritting
some images.

Current value of can_remove_subscribers_group field is admins system group
only so behavior is not changed. We would provide support to change this
setting from API and UI in further commits.
This commit sets can_remove_subscribers_group to admins system
group while creating streams as it will be the default value
of this setting. In further we would provide an option to set
value of this setting to any user group while creating streams
using API or UI.
This commit extracts whether a stream is accessible or not
in a new function such that "Subscription" object is passed
by the caller and thus we can use these functions to check
access of multiple streams in a loop without querying the
database in a loop for subscription objects.
This commit renames admin_access_required parameter of
list_to_streams function to unsubscribing_others since that
parameter is used and passed as True only when calling
the function while unsubscribing others and in further
commits we would allow non-admins too to unsubscribe others
based on can_remove_subscribers_group setting.
This commit removes the is_stream_admin property of Subscription
model and also updates check_stream_access_for_delete_or_update
to not return true when is_stream_admin is True.
We also removes the relevant tests.
This change is done as we would not be moving forward with the
stream administrator concept as we have decided to modify the
permissions model as per #19525.
We have now decided to not continue with the stream administrator
concept as we are changing the permissions model to be based on
user groups as per #19525. So, this commit updates the error message
to "Must be an organization administrator".
Add none-checks, rename variables (to avoid redefinition of
the same variable with different types error), add necessary
type annotations.
This is a part of #18777.
