We now query RealmDomain objects up front. This
change is minor in most circumstances--it sometimes
saves a round trip to the database; other times,
it actually brings back slightly more data
(optimistically).
The big win will come in a subsequent commit,
where we avoid running these queries in a loop
for every callback.
Note that I'm not sure if we intentionally
omitted checks for emails with "+" in them
for some circumstances, but I just preserved
the behavior.
This function slims down the data that we get
from the database in order to create the
streams part of our client payload.
We also fix a typo.
We also clearly distinguish between queries
and lists here.
Credits to @xpac1985 for reporting, debugging and proposing fix to the
issue. The proposed fix was modified slightly by @hackerkid to set the
correct value for max_invites and upload_quota_gb. Tests added by
@hackerkid.
Fixes#13974
Django 2.2.x is the next LTS release after Django 1.11.x; I expect
we'll be on it for a while, as Django 3.x won't have an LTS release
series out for a while.
Because of upstream API changes in Django, this commit includes
several changes beyond requirements and:
* urls: django.urls.resolvers.RegexURLPattern has been replaced by
django.urls.resolvers.URLPattern; affects OpenAPI code and related
features which re-parse Django's internals.
https://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/28593
* test_runner: Change number to suffix. Django changed the name in this
ticket: https://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/28578
* Delete now-unnecessary SameSite cookie code (it's now the default).
* forms: urlsafe_base64_encode returns string in Django 2.2.
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.2/ref/utils/#django.utils.http.urlsafe_base64_encode
* upload: Django's File.size property replaces _get_size().
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/2.2/_modules/django/core/files/base/
* process_queue: Migrate to new autoreload API.
* test_messages: Add an extra query caused by .refresh_from_db() losing
the .select_related() on the Realm object.
* session: Sync SessionHostDomainMiddleware with Django 2.2.
There's a lot more we can do to take advantage of the new release;
this is tracked in #11341.
Many changes by Tim Abbott, Umair Waheed, and Mateusz Mandera squashed
are squashed into this commit.
Fixes#10835.
It adds this index:
"zerver_userpresence_realm_id_timestamp_25f410da_idx" btree (realm_id, "timestamp")
We expect this index to provide a major performance improvement when
fetching presence data for the whole realm from the database on
servers like zulipchat.com hosting several realms.
This index is intended to optimize the performance of the very
frequently run query of "what is the presence status of all users in a
realm?".
Main changes:
- add realm_id to UserPresence
- add index for realm_id
- backfill realm_id for old rows
- change all writes to UserPresence to include
realm_id
The index is of this form:
"zerver_userpresence_realm_id_5c4ef5a9" btree (realm_id)
We will create an index on (realm_id, timestamp) in a
future commit, but I think it's a bit faster if you do
the backfill before the index.
There's also a minor tweak to the populate_db script.
This commit includes a new `stream_post_policy` setting,
by replacing the `is_announcement_only` field from the Stream model,
which is done by mirroring the structure of the existing
`create_stream_policy`.
It includes the necessary schema and database migrations to migrate
the is_announcement_only boolean field to stream_post_policy,
a smallPositiveInteger field similar to many other settings.
This change is done to allow organization administrators to restrict
new members from creating and posting to a stream. However, this does
not affect admins who are new members.
With many tweaks by tabbott to documentation under /help, etc.
Fixes#13616.
While the result of this change doesn't completely do what we need, it
does remove a huge amount of duplicated lists of fields. With a bit
more similar work, we should be able to eliminate a broad category of
potential bugs involving Stream and Subscription objects being
represented inconsistently in the API.
Work towards #13787.
Only the getter of the is_new_member property is added,
to the UserProfile class. This is done to deduplicate
action of checking whether a user is a new member or not.
Our recent fixes to using the system's configured memcached settings
broke populate_db, because its hacky clear_database helper is called
with a hacked-up settings module.
We fix this by first moving this out-of-place code from models.py into
populate_db, and then saving the settings required to access memcached
so that we can use them in clear_database.
We also fix a mypy erorr in flush-memcached that matches the same
issue fixed in clear_database.
This experimental setting disables sending private messages in Zulip
in a crude way (i.e. users get an error when they try to send one).
It makes no effort to adjust the UI to avoid advertising the idea of
sending private messages.
Fixes#6617.
Addresses point 1 of #13533.
MissedMessageEmailAddress objects get tied to the specific that was
missed by the user. A useful benefit of that is that email message sent
to that address will handle topic changes - if the message that was
missed gets its topic changed, the email response will get posted under
the new topic, while in the old model it would get posted under the
old topic, which could potentially be confusing.
Migrating redis data to this new model is a bit tricky, so the migration
code has comments explaining some of the compromises made there, and
test_migrations.py tests handling of the various possible cases that
could arise.
Preparatory commit for making the email mirror use the database instead
of redis for missed message addresses.
This model will represent missed message email addresses, which
currently have their data stored in redis.
The redis data will be converted and migrated into these models and
the email mirror will start using them in the main commit.
In 3892a8afd8, we restructured the
system for managing uploaded files to a much cleaner model where we
just do parsing inside bugdown.
That new model had potentially buggy handling of cases around both
relative URLs and URLS starting with `realm.host`.
We address this by further rewriting the handling of attachments to
avoid regular expressions entirely, instead relying on urllib for
parsing, and having bugdown output `path_id` values, so that there's
no need for any conversions between formats outside bugdowm.
The check_attachment_reference_change function for processing message
updates is significantly simplified in the process.
The new check on the hostname has the side effect of requiring us to
fix some previously weird/buggy test data.

For new user onboarding, it's important for it to be easy to verify
that Zulip's mobile push notifications work without jumping through
hoops or potentially making mistakes. For that reason, it makes sense
to toggle the notification defaults for new users to the more
aggressive mode (ignoring whether the user is currently actively
online); they can set the more subtle mode if they find that the
notifications are annoying.
Previously, these accesses used e.g. .select_related("realm"), which
was the only foreign key on the Stream model. Since the intent in
these code paths is to attach the related models for efficient access,
we should just do that for all related models, including Recipient.
With the recipient field being denormalized into the UserProfile and
Streams models, all current uses of get_stream_recipients can be done
more efficiently, by simply checking the .recipient_id attribute on the
appropriate objects.
With the recipient field being denormalized into the UserProfile and
Streams models, all current uses of bulk_get_recipients can be done more
efficient, by simply checking the .recipient_id attribute on the
appropriate objects.
This removes the last of the messy use of regular expressions outside
bugdown to make decisions on whether a message contains an attachment
or not. Centralizing questions about links to be decided entirely
within bugdown (rather than doing ad-hoc secondary parsing elsewhere)
makes the system cleaner and more robust.
Previously, we would naively set has_attachment just by searching
the whole messages for strings like `/user_uploads/...`. We now
prevent running do_claim_attachments for messages that obviously
do not have an attachment in them that we previously ran.
For example: attachments in codeblocks or
attachments that otherwise do not match our link syntax.
The new implementation runs that check on only the urls that
bugdown determines should be rendered. We also refactor some
Attachment tests in test_messages to test this change.
The new method is:
1. Create a list of potential_attachment_urls in Bugdown while rendering.
2. Loop over this list in do_claim_attachments for the actual claiming.
For saving:
3. If we claimed an attachment, set message.has_attachment to True.
For updating:
3. If claimed_attachment != message.has_attachment: update has_attachment.
We do not modify the logic for 'unclaiming' attachments when editing.
This is adds foreign keys to the corresponding Recipient object in the
UserProfile on Stream tables, a denormalization intended to improve
performance as this is a common query.
In the migration for setting the field correctly for existing users,
we do a direct SQL query (because Django 1.11 doesn't provide any good
method for doing it properly in bulk using the ORM.).
A consequence of this change to the model is that a bit of code needs
to be added to the functions responsible for creating new users (to
set the field after the Recipient object gets created). Fortunately,
there's only a few code paths for doing that.
Also an adjustment is needed in the import system - this introduces a
circular relation between Recipient and UserProfile. The field cannot be
set until the Recipient objects have been created, but UserProfiles need
to be created before their corresponding Recipients. We deal with this
by first importing UserProfiles same way as before, but we leave the
personal_recipient field uninitialized. After creating the Recipient
objects, we call a function to set the field for all the imported users
in bulk.
A similar change is made for managing Stream objects.
Fixes#13452.
The migration from UserProfile.is_realm_admin/UserProfile.is_guest in
e10361a832 broke our LDAP-based support
for setting a user's role via LDAP properties, which relied on setting
those fields. Because the django-auth-ldap feature powering that only
supports booleans (and in any case, we don't want to expose constants
like `ROLE_REALM_ADMINISTRATOR` to the LDAP configuration interface),
it makes sense to provide setters for these legacy fields for
backwards-compatibility.
We lint against using these setters directly in Zulip's codebase
directly. The issue with using these is that when changing user's
.role we want to create appropriate RealmAuditLog entries and send
events. This isn't possible when using these setters - the log entries
and events should be created if the role change in the UserProfile is
actually save()-ed to the database - and on the level of the setter
function, it's not known whether the change will indeed be saved.
It would have to be somehow figured out on the level of post_save
signal handlers, but it doesn't seem like a good design to have such
complexity there, for the sake of setters that generally shouldn't be
used anyway - because we prefer the do_change_is_* functions.
The purpose of this change is narrowly to handle use cases like the
setattr on these boolean properties.
If a message begins with /me, we do not have any cases where the
rendered content would not begin with `<p>/me`. Thus, we can safely
remove the redundant checks both on the backend and frontend.
It appears we forgot to make identical changes to the backend
in #11089 while adding support for multiline /me messages,
resulting in any messages that didn't end in a paragraph getting
rendered as a regular message instead.
Fixes#13454.
For a long time, we've been only doing the zxcvbn password strength
checks on the browser, which is helpful, but means users could through
hackery (or a bug in the frontend validation code) manage to set a
too-weak password. We fix this by running our password strength
validation on the backend as well, using python-zxcvbn.
In theory, a bug in python-zxcvbn could result in it producing a
different opinion than the frontend version; if so, it'd be a pretty
bad bug in the library, and hopefully we'd hear about it from users,
report upstream, and get it fixed that way. Alternatively, we can
switch to shelling out to node like we do for KaTeX.
Fixes#6880.
This change makes it possible for users to control the notification
settings for wildcard mentions as a separate control from PMs and
direct @-mentions.
As discussed in the comment, ideally these checks should be added
completely automatically, rather than needing to be manually added
every time we add a new setting. But hopefully the example code for
all of the similar enums that this provides will at least provide some
help.
By adding some additional plumbing (through PreregistrationUser) of the
full_name and an additional full_name_validated option, we
pre-populate the Full Name field in the registration form when coming
through a social backend (google/github/saml/etc.) and potentially skip
the registration form (if the user would have nothing to do there other
than clicking the Confirm button) and just create the account and log
the user in.
We currently have code to calculate the value of realm_icon_url,
admin_emails and default_discount in two diffrent places. With
the addition of showing confirmation links it would become three.
The easiest way to deduplicate the code and make the view cleaner
is by doing the calculations in template. Alternatively one can
write a function that takes users, realms and confirmations as
arguments and sets the value of realm_icon_url, admin_emails and
default_discount appropriately in realm object according to the
type of the confirmation. But that seems more messy than passing
the functions directly to template approach.
There are a few outstanding issues that we expect to resolve beforce
including this in a release, but this is good checkpoint to merge.
This PR is a collaboration with Tim Abbott.
Fixes#716.
Priviously, we rendered the topic links using the msg.sender.realm.
This resulted in issues with Zulip's internal bots not having access
to the realm_filters of the destination stream's realm. For example,
sending a message via the email gateway or notification would not
linkify any realm filters that a user would expect them to.
Fixes#1727.
With the server down, apply migrations 0245 and 0246. 0246 will remove
the pub_date column, so it's essential that the previous migrations
ran correctly to copy data before running this.
1. Apply migration 0243 to add date_sent column.
2. Apply migration 0244 to copy pub_date over to date_sent. Can be done
with the server running.
3. With the server down (for consistency between memory and
database state of Django objects), verify consistency with
Message.objects.exclude(date_sent=F("pub_date")).count() == 0
The previous code for ensuring the sort order of emoji choices was
correct relied on an OrderedDict structure, which isn't guaranteed to
be preserved when passed to the frontend via JSON (in fact, it isn't,
since we converted the way page_params is passed to use
sort_keys=True). Switch it to a list of dictionaries to correct this.
Fixes#13220.
When using our EMAIL_ADDRESS_VISIBILITY_ADMINS feature, we were
apparently creating bot users with different email and delivery_email
properties, due to effectively an oversight in how the code was
written (the initial migration handled bots correctly, but not bots
created after the transition).
Following the refactor in the last commit, the fix for this is just
adding the missing conditional, a test, and a database migration to
fix any incorrectly created bots leaked previously.
This is also a useful preparatory refactor for having a user setting
controlling whether one's own email address is publicly available
within the organization.
Fixes#9401.
This adds a FAKE_EMAIL_DOMAIN setting, which should be used if
EXTERNAL_HOST is not a valid domain, and something else is needed to
form bot and dummy user emails (if email visibility is turned off).
It defaults to EXTERNAL_HOST.
get_fake_email_domain() should be used to get this value. It validates
that it's correctly set - that it can be used to form valid emails.
If it's not set correctly, an exception is raised. This is the right
approach, because it's undesirable to have the server seemingly
peacefully operating with that setting misconfigured, as that could
mask some hidden sneaky bugs due to UserProfiles with invalid emails,
which would blow up the moment some code that does validate the emails
is called.
This requires part 1 (which can take hours to run but generally
doesn't require downtime) to be completed first.
This portion of the migration will require the server to be completely
down for a brief period; for chat.zulip.org with 250M UserMessage
rows, it took about 60s to run; that time will vary depending on
hardware details like whether the server has an SSD, but fundamentally
shouldn't be long.
Our upgrade-zulip and upgrade-zulip-from-git tools can apply this
migration correctly; nothing special needs to be done.
Fixes#13040.
As part of adding support for more than 2B UserMessage rows in a Zulip
server, we need to change UserMessage.id (a field we don't access but
is needed by Django) from an int to a bigint. This commit is a series
of migrations which create a `bigint_id` column and populates it correctly.
This migration will take a long time to run; on chat.zulip.org (a
server with a lot of history), it took about 4 hours to complete.
How to migrate with minimal downtime:
1. Run `upgrade-zulip-from-git` through this commit. It will install
migration 0238 and then more or less hang while applying migration
0239. Once migration 0238 is completed, however, your server should
be able to be started back up safely while migration 0239 is running.
2. Run `/home/zulip/deployments/next/scripts/restart-server` in a
separate terminal to get Zulip running again.
3. When the `upgrade-zulip-from-git` command finishes, it will
automatically re-restart the Zulip server, leaving you in a consistent
state and ready to do part 2 of the migration.
A useful `manage.py shell` query for checking the state after this
commit is consistent is this:
assert UserMessage.objects.exclude(bigint_id=F("id")).count() == 0
Part of #13040.
Instead of having the rather unclear type Union[str,
List[UserDisplayRecipient]] where display_recipient of message dicts was
involved, we use DisplayRecipientT (renamed from DisplayRecipientCacheT
- since there wasn't much reason to have the word Cache in there), which
makes it clearer what is the actual nature of the objects and gets rid
of this pretty big type declaration.
Since the display_recipients dictionaries corresponding to users are
always dictionaries with keys email, full_name, short_name, id,
is_mirror_dummy - instead of using the overly general Dict[str, Any]
type, we can define a UserDisplayRecipient type,
using an appropriate TypedDict.
The type definitions are moved from display_recipient.py to types.py, so
that they can be imported in models.py.
Appropriate type adjustments are made in various places in the code
where we operate on display_recipients.
The typing for generic_bulk_cached_fetch is complicated, and was
recorded incorrectly previously for the case where a cache_transformer
function is required. We fix this by adding the new CacheItemT, and
additionally add comments explaining what's going on with these types
for future reference.
Thanks to Mateusz Mandera for raising this issue.
This changes the requirements for UserProfile to disallow some
additional characters, with the overall goal of being able to use
formataddr in send_mail.py.
We don't need to be particularly careful in the database migration,
because user full_names are not required to be unique.
When we add Plus, the first sentence should change to "Available on Zulip
Standard and Plus".
I copied the styling of .tip out of expediency, but it's also possible that
long term we'll want only 1 tip-like box styling.
The hover styling is a bit random, but I tried to copy other hover styles I
found in settings.scss.
Note that this renames .upgrade_realm_plan_type_suggestion to .upgrade-tip.
This commit adds a new setting to the user's notification settings that
will change the behaviour of the unread count in the title bar and
desktop application.
When enabled, the title bar will show the count of unread private messages
and mentions. When disabled, the title bar will act as before, showing
the total number of unread messages.
Fixes#1736.
Add new custom profile field type, External account.
External account field links user's social media
profile with account. e.g. GitHub, Twitter, etc.
Fixes part of #12302
In 93914d8cd8, we intended to change our
markdown processor to add support for multi-line /me messages.
However, we neglected to change the backend processor, resulting in
the change only taking effect for the user sending the message :(.
We fix this by changing the backend processor too.
Fixes#12450.
We add a new model, ArchiveTransaction, to tie archived objects together
in a coherent way, according to the batches in which they are archived.
This enables making a better system for restoring from archive, and it
seems just more sensible to tie the archived objects in this way, rather
the somewhat vague setting of archive_timestamp to each object using
timezone_now().
This fixes the mis-alphabetized `fluid_layout_width` at few places in
the codebase, along with that it also fixes sorting order of
`property_types` dictionary in models.py and few model fields of
`UserProfile` model class.
This function is an alternative to get_admin_users that we use in all
places where we explicitly want only human administrative users (not
administrative bots). The following commits will rename
get_admin_users for better clarity.
Namely, here we add the "plan_includes_wide_organization_logo" and
"upgrade_text_for_wide_organization_logo" to the page_params (which
is set in zerver/lib/events.py).
"plan_includes_wide_organization_logo" is True if the plan is not of
the Realm.LIMITED type. We need to add this extra boolean parameter
instead of just using "realm_plan_type" to make things a lot easier
to work with on the frontend side, especially considering that
handlebars won't allow checking for equality in its {{#if}} blocks.
Rename notification property `enable_stream_sounds` to
`enable_stream_audible_notifications` to match with other
notification property patterns.
Fixes part of #12304
Previously, we didn't have validation to prevent editing certain flags
that don't make sense for a client to edit, like whether a user was
mentioned in a given message.
This isn't a security issue -- the user could only mess up their own
personal search results (etc.), but it does seem worth fixing to avoid
confusion for folks developing Zulip clients.
While we're at it, clearly document the situation in comments.
This adds a setting to control Zulip's default behavior of sorting to
bottom and graying out inactive streams. The previous logic is still
the default "automatic", but this gives users more control. See the
models.py comment for details.
Fixes#11524.
We had some excessively tight rules about what characters were
allowed, which in particular prevented using `?foo=bar&baz=quux`
structures in the realm filters URLs.
Fixes#12239.
This renames Subscription.in_home_view field to is_muted, for greater
clarity as to what it does just from seeing the setting name, without
having to look it up.
Also disabled an obsolete test_migrations test.
Fixes#10042.
This commit migrates the Subscription's notification fields from a
BooleanField to a NullBooleanField where a value of None means to
inherit the value from user's profile.
Also includes a migrations to set the corresponding settings to None
if they match the user profile's values. This migration helps us in
getting rid of the weird "Apply to all" widget that we offered on
subscription settings page.
The mobile apps can't handle None appearing as the stream-level
notification settings, so for backwards-compatibility we arrange to
only send True/False to the mobile apps by applying those defaults
server-side. We introduce a notification_settings_null value within a
client_capabilities structure that newer versions of the mobile apps
can use to request the new model.
This mobile compatibility code is pretty effectively tested by the
existing test_events tests for the subscriptions subsystem.
This makes the implementation of `get_realm` consistent with its
declared return type of `Realm` rather than `Optional[Realm]`.

This commit replaces the `create_stream_by_admins_only` setting with a
new `create_stream_policy` setting, which mirroring the structure of
the existing `invite_to_stream_policy`.
This is important preparation for migrating the waiting period feature
to be its own independent setting.
Fixes#12236.
Fixes#12132.
Realm setting to disable avatar changes is already present.
The `AVATAR_CHANGES_DISABLED` setting now follows the same
2-setting model as `NAME_CHANGES_DISABLED`.
This is useful when syncing avatars from an integrated LDAP/active
directory.
The upload avatar and delete avatar buttons are hidden if avatar
changes are disabled and the user is a non-admin.
If the user has a gravatar set, then the user will not be able to
upload an image as their avatar if avatar changes are disabled.
Part of #12132.
This commit creates a new organization setting that determines whether
a user can invite other users to streams. Previously this was linked
to the waiting period threshold, but this was both not documented and
overly limiting.
With significant tweaks by tabbott to change the database model to not
involve two threshhold fields, edit the tests, etc.
This requires follow-up work to make the create stream policy setting
work how this code implies it should.
Fixes#12042.
Allow realms to specify the day of the week when the digest should be sent out.
When enqueue-ing digests, pick only the realms that chose the current weekday as
the day to send out digests.
An endpoint was created in zerver/views. Basic rate-limiting was
implemented using RealmAuditLog. The idea here is to simply log each
export event as a realm_exported event. The number of events
occurring in the time delta is checked to ensure that the weekly
limit is not exceeded.
The event is published to the 'deferred_work' queue processor to
prevent the export process from being killed after 60s.
Upon completion of the export the realm admin(s) are notified.
See the comment, but this is a significant performance optimization
for all of our pages using common_context, because this code path is
called more than a dozen times (recursively) by common_context.
Follow up on 92dc363. This modifies the ScheduledEmail model
and send_future_email to properly support multiple recipients.
Tweaked by tabbott to add some useful explanatory comments and fix
issues with the migration.
This field is primarily intended to support avoiding displaying the
"more topics" feature in new organizations and streams, where we might
know that all messages in the stream are already available in the
browser.
Based on original work by Roman Godov, and significantly modified by
tabbott.
The second migration involved here could be expensive on Zulip Cloud,
but is unlikely to be an issue on other servers.
This commit does the following three things:
1. Update stream model to accomodate rendered description.
2. Render and save the stream rendered description on update.
3. Render and save stream descriptions on creation.
Further, the stream's rendered description is also sent whenever the
stream's description is being sent.
This is preparatory work for eliminating the use of the
non-authoritative marked.js markdown parser for stream descriptions.
This commit also contains the following auxiliary changes:
* Adds a custom exception, StreamWithIDDoesNotExist for when
a stream with a given ID does not exist because the error
message returned by StreamDoesNotExist only makes with stream
names, not IDs.
* Adds a new helper, get_stream_by_id_in_realm, which is similar
to get_user_profile_by_id_in_realm (introduced in #10391).
* Adds a helper, validate_stream_id_with_pm_notification, which
returns the Stream object associated with a given ID and also
handles PM notifications to the bot owner if the message was
sent by a bot and if the stream does not exist or has no
subscribers.
* Modifies the message sent by send_pm_if_empty_stream to
accommodate stream IDs.
Note that all of the above changes are required before check_message
can be modified to support stream IDs.
This adds a setting under "Notification" section of
"Organization settings" tab, which enables Organization administrator to
control whether the missed message emails include the message content or
not.
Fixes: #11123.
Since we have already added the `invite_as` field to models, we can now
replace usage of `invite_as_admin` properly with its equivalent `invite_as
== PreregistrationUser.INVITE_AS['REALM_ADMIN']`.
Hence, also removed now redundant `invite_as`.
This adds a model field `invited_as` to PreregistrationUser model class
which will replace `invited_as_admin` in future. Intentions behind adding
this are that we can specify "types" of users for an invited person other
than admin or regular that is, guest user or maybe many others in the
future.
This is a major rewrite of the billing system. It moves subscription
information off of stripe Subscriptions and into a local CustomerPlan
table.
To keep this manageable, it leaves several things unimplemented
(downgrading, etc), and a variety of other TODOs in the code. There are also
some known regressions, e.g. error-handling on /upgrade is broken.
This adds a new realm_logo field, which is a horizontal-format logo to
be displayed in the top-left corner of the webapp, and any other
places where we might want a wide-format branding of the organization.
Tweaked significantly by tabbott to rebase, fix styling, etc.
Fixing the styling of this feature's loading indicator caused me to
notice the loading indicator for the realm_icon feature was also ugly,
so I fixed that too.
Fixes#7995.
This is a simple change to our validation, to allow multiple copies of
the main linkifier syntax, which lets us support things like generic
GitHub URLs.
Fixes#10914.
Our list of allowed characters in realm filter patterns has long been
too string; fix this by extending the pattern.
Also, extend the tests to have examples of actual strings one would
use with the patterns, for clarity.
Fixes#10953, fixes#6835.
Also, add a new notification sound, "ding". It comes from
https://freesound.org, where the original Zulip notification sound comes
from as well. In the future, new sounds can be added by adding audio
files to the `static/audio/notification_sounds` directory.
Tweaked significantly by tabbott:
* Avoided removing static/audio/zulip.ogg, because that file is

Fixes#8051.
A key part of this is the new helper, get_user_by_delivery_email. Its
verbose name is important for clarity; it should help avoid blind
copy-pasting of get_user (which we'll also want to rename).
Unfortunately, it requires detailed understanding of the context to
figure out which one to use; each is used in about half of call sites.
Another important note is that this PR doesn't migrate get_user calls
in the tests except where not doing so would cause the tests to fail.
This probably deserves a follow-up refactor to avoid bugs here.
This is preparatory work for settings controlling who can see user
emails; it includes the API-level support for editing it, but no code
to actually enforce the policy.
This is the first step of letting users use Zulip markdown in their
SHORT_TEXT and LONG_TEXT custom profile fields, so that they can
include emphasis, links, etc.
This doesn't include any frontend logic yet, however.
Previously, Zulip did not correctly handle the case of a mobile device
being registered with a push device token being registered for
multiple accounts on the same server (which is a common case on
zulipchat.com). This was because our database `unique` and
`unique_together` indexes incorrectly enforced the token being unique
on a given server, rather than unique for a given user_id.
We fix this gap, and at the same time remove unnecessary (and
incorrectly racey) logic deleting and recreating the tokens in the
appropriate tables.
There's still an open mobile app bug causing repeated re-registrations
in a loop, but this should fix the fact that the relevant mobile bug
causes the server to 500.
Follow-up work that may be of value includes:
* Removing `ios_app_id`, which may not have much purpose.
* Renaming `last_updated` to `data_created`, since that's what it is now.
But none of those are critical to solving the actual bug here.
Fixes#8841.
This is largely inspired by requests from people not liking the
Google's new emojiset. A lot of people were requesting to revert
back to old blobs emojiset so we are re-enabling this feature
after making relevant infrastructure changes for supporting google's
old blob emojiset and re-adding support for twitter emojiset.
Fixes: #10158.
This adds a feature in the "Notification" section of "Settings" tab,
which lets user enable or disable login emails notification.
Tweaked by tabbott to simplify the test.
Fixes: #5795, progress towards #5854.
This commit modifies FIELD_TYPE_DATA dict in `CustomProfileField`
model to store keyword of field types. And create new dict
FIELD_TYPE_CHOICES_DICT to store all field type information
by field type keyword, i.e. id, name.
This is preparatory commit to remove all static use of field
types in frontend and access field type with keyword instead
of display name.
This uses the recently introduced active_mobile_push_notification
flag; messages that have had a mobile push notification sent will have
a removal push notification sent as soon as they are marked as read.
Note that this feature is behind a setting,
SEND_REMOVE_PUSH_NOTIFICATIONS, since the notification format is not
supported by the mobile apps yet, and we want to give a grace period
before we start sending notifications that appear as (null) to
clients. But the tracking logic to maintain the set of message IDs
with an active push notification runs unconditionally.
This is designed with at-least-once semantics; so mobile clients need
to handle the possibility that they receive duplicat requests to
remove a push notification.
We reuse the existing missedmessage_mobile_notifications queue
processor for the work, to avoid materially impacting the latency of
marking messages as read.
Fixes#7459, though we'll need to open a follow-up issue for
using these data on iOS.
Due to copyright issues with potentially displaying Apple emojisets on
non-apple devices, as well as iamcal dropping support for the emojione
emojiset (see https://github.com/iamcal/emoji-data/pull/142), we are
dropping (perhaps temporarily) support for allowing users to switch
emojisets in Zulip.
This commit just hides the feature from the user but leaves most of
the infrastructure in place so that in the future if we decide to
re-enable the support we will not need to redo the infrastructure work
(some JS-side code is deleted, mostly because we'll want to re-add the
feature using the do_settings_change infrastructure anyway).
The most likely emoji set to add is the legacy "blobs" Google emoji
set, since it seems popular with some users.
Tweaked by tabbott to remove some additional JS code and update the
changelog.
This flag is used to track which user/message pairs correspond to an
active mobile push notification, that should potentially be cleared
when the user reads the message.
This flag should never appear on a message that is also marked as
read; eventually we may want a cron job to check for that condition.
We include a partial index on UserMessage for this flag.
This renames Realm.show_digest_email field to
digest_emails_enabled, for greater clarity as to what it does
just from seeing the setting name, without having to look it up.
Fixes part of #10042.
This renames Realm.restricted_to_domain field to
emails_restricted_to_domains, for greater clarity as to what it does
just from seeing the setting name, without having to look it up.

The is_private flag is intended to be set if recipient type is
'private'(1) or 'huddle'(3), otherwise i.e if it is 'stream'(2), it
should be unset.
This commit adds a database index for the is_private flag (which we'll
need to use it). That index is used to reset the flag if it was
already set. The already set flags were due to a previous removal of
is_me_message flag for which the values were not cleared out.
For now, the is_private flag is always 0 since the really hard part of
this migration is clearing the unspecified previous state; future
commits will fully implement it actually doing something.
History: Migration rewritten significantly by tabbott to ensure it
runs in only 3 minutes on chat.zulip.org. A key detail in making that
work was to ensure that we use the new index for the queries to find
rows to update (which currently requires the `order_by` and `limit`
clauses).
This is a preparatory refactor for adding
UserProfile.can_subscribe_other_users.
Although there existed a test for limiting users from creating
streams at `test_subs.test_user_settings_for_adding_streams`,
it did not test the logic inside can_add_streams, tests have
been added to solve that issue.
This deletes the unused Subscription.notifications field and removes
it from some testing and analytics code (which should not have been
using it in the first place).
Fixes#10042.
This makes a few tweaks from a pass through the file following up
on the recent 1eb67e4bf, which added documentation comments and
docstrings to a number of fields and models. Also reorder a few
more fields, where that makes things clearer.
There are a lot of specific edits, made as I read through and
particularly where I didn't immediately understand things, or
imagined a reader might have questions. A couple of themes:
* Use blank lines everywhere to set off a given comment and the
items it applies to.
* In a few places where we didn't already, specify concretely how
the meaning is represented in the value (answers include: it's a
number of messages; it's a name from such-and-such namespace;
it's a JSON blob.)
This reorganizes the field definitions to be more readable, and adds
descriptive comments for a number of fields whose purpose might be
otherwise unclear.
This commit creates a new field called delivery_email. For now, it is
exactly the same as email upon user profile creation and should stay
that way even when email is changed, and is used only for sending
outgoing email from Zulip.
The purpose of this field is to support an upcoming option where the
existing `email` field in Zulip becomes effectively the user's
"display email" address, as part of making it possible for users
actual email addresses (that can receive email, stored in the
delivery_email field) to not be available to other non-administrator
users in the organization.
Because the `email` field is used in numerous places in display code,
in the API, and in database queries, the shortest path to implementing
this "private email" feature is to keep "email" as-is in those parts
of the codebase, and just set the existing "email" ("display email")
model field to be something generated like
"username@zulip.example.com" for display purposes.
Eventually, we'll want to do further refactoring, either in the form
of having both `display_email` and `delivery_email` as fields, or
renaming "email" to "username".
The main remaining todo for correctly populating
RealmAuditLog.requires_billing_update is supporting the de-seating (and
corresponding re-seating) that happens after being offline for two weeks.
The only changes visible at the AST level, checked using
https://github.com/asottile/astpretty, are
zerver/lib/test_fixtures.py:
'\x1b\\[(1|0)m' ↦ '\\x1b\\[(1|0)m'
'\\[[X| ]\\] (\\d+_.+)\n' ↦ '\\[[X| ]\\] (\\d+_.+)\\n'
which is fine because re treats '\\x1b' and '\\n' the same way as
'\x1b' and '\n'.

This fixes two issues:
* Our guest users feature gave guest users access to public stream
attachments even if they couldn't access the public stream.
* After a user joins a private stream with our new shared history
feature, they couldn't see images uploaded before they joined.
The tests need to check for a few types of issues:
* The actual access control permissions.
* How many database queries are used in the various
cases for that second model, especially with multiple messages
referencing an attachment. This function gets called a lot, and we
want to keep it fast.
Fixes#9372.
The new can_access_all_realm_members function is meant to act as a
base function for guest users and Zephyr realm users regarding the
accessibility of the information of other users in the realm.
This should make it easier for us to iterate on a less-dense Zulip.
We create two classes on body, less_dense_mode and more_dense_mode, so
that it's easy as we refactor to separate the two concepts from things
like colors that are independent.
This should significantly improve the user experience for creating
additional accounts on zulipchat.com.
Currently, disabled in production pending some work on visual styling.
The "Short/Long Text" option for custom profile fields wasn't properly
capitalized (i.e. "Text" should have been all lowercase), and also
wasn't properly tagged for translation.
For the sake of consistency, the change to proper capitalization has
also been applied to the models and any tests involving this feature.
Due to a bug in Django, it complained about the models having changed
and thus not being consistent with the migrations. That isn't actually
true (since the database stores the numeric values for each key), but
the migrations have been modified to avoid this error. This does not
affect the migrations' behaviour in any way.
This commit adds a new field history_public_to_subscribers to the
Stream model, which serves a similar function to the old
settings.PRIVATE_STREAM_HISTORY_FOR_SUBSCRIBERS; we still use that
setting as the default value for new streams to avoid breaking
backwards-compatibility for those users before we are ready with an
actual UI for users to choose directly.
This also comes with a migration to set the value of the new field for
existing streams with an algorithm matching that used at runtime.
With significant changes by Tim Abbott.
This is an initial part of our efforts on #9232.
Add realm setting to set time limit for message deleitng.
Set default value of message_content_delete_limit_seconds
to 600 seconds(10 min).
Thanks to Shubham Dhama for rebasing and reworking this. Some final
edits also done by Tim Abbott.
Fixes#7344.
This is a simple computed field. It's intended to more clearly
capture the meaning of this restriction for the users in zephyr mirror
realms, and eventually support guest user accounts in normal Zulip
realms.
Remove models.get_user_profiles_by_ids() and
obtain user's bots profiles in actions.get_service_dicts_for_bots() by
users.user_ids_to_users() instead of models.get_user_profiles_by_ids().
Fixes#8939
We don't indend for this server-level setting to exist in the long
term; the purpose of this is just to make it easy to test this code
path for development purposes.
This implements much of the Message side part of #2745.
Implement few optimizations for reading admin's bot dicts from database
for a constants number of requests:
- add models.get_user_profiles_by_ids() for reading bots profiles
by single query from database
- add models.get_services_for_bots() for reading services for bots
by single query from database
- add bot_config.get_bot_configs() for reading config data for bots
by single query from database

This was causing a rather confusing test flake in
test_stream_error_pm_to_bot_owner. What was happening was that if
this test (which used that code path) ran within 5 minutes of the
populate_db run, it would fail.
Applies the logic to allow community members to edit topics
of others' messages if this setting is True. Otherwise,
only administrators can update the topic of others' messages.
This logic includes a 24-hour time limit for community topic editing.
This commit migrates realm emoji to be addressed by their `id` rather
than their name. This fixes a long standing issue which was causing
an error on uploading an emoji with same name as a deactivated realm
emoji.
Fixes: #6977.
This makes this value much easier for a server admin to change than it
was when embedded directly in the code. (Note this entire mechanism
already only applies on a server open for anyone to create a realm.)
Doing this also means getting the default out of the database.
Instead, we make the column nullable, and when it's NULL in the
database, treat that as whatever the current default is. This better
matches anyway the likely model where there are a few realms with
specially-set values, and everything else should be treated uniformly.
The migration contains a `RenameField` step, which sounds scary
operationally -- but it really does mean just the *field*, in
the model within the Python code. The underlying column's name
doesn't change.
Other functions took the form of returning Sequence[T] when the QuerySet
functionality is unused beyond the function, with T being the objects
filtered for in the function body; this commit follows that practice for the
one remaining python2 comment-annotated function, completing the transition
of models.py to py3.5 function annotations.
A note is also added to another function regarding a need to return a
QuerySet, and ideally a QuerySet[T] in line with the other functions, as and
when QuerySet becomes annotated as a generic.
We also delete a couple helper functions that were only used there.
This management command was primarily used before we had a UI for
creating outgoing webhook bots.
In theory, we should be able to delete this, since first, if there are
no users in the organization, we'll end up with an equivalent value
(an empty collection of users), and second, it shouldn't be possible
for an active Zulip realm to have 0 active users in it anyway.
But the way we construct the database query in query_for_ids is such
that it's necessary to avoid a 500.
This commit refactors the bugdown to perform a lookup only on active
realm emojis. This was needed because once we migrate realm emojis
to be addressed by `id` rather than name, it will be costly to
perform a lookup on all the realm emojis.
Till now, we had been storing realm emoji's name in emoji code field
in reactions' model. This commit migrates it to store realm emoji's id.
It is a part of effort to migrate realm emojis to be referenced by their
id and not by name.
Add `translate_emoticons` to `prop_types` and `expected_keys`.
Furthermore, create a emoji-translating Markdown inline pattern.
Also use a JavaScript version of `translate_emoticons` and then use
this function during Markdown previews and as a preprocessor. This
is only needed for previews, because usually emoticon translation
happens on the backend after sending.
Add tests for emoticon translation, a settings UI, and a /help/ page
as well.
Tweaked by tabbott to fix various test failurse as well as how this
handles whitespace, requiring emoticons to not have adjacent
characters.
Fixes#1768.
models.py should only contain thin wrapper functions. Furthermore,
this move allows us to remove the circular imports. The two moved
functions are interdependent and are thus moved in one commit.
Users having only account in one realm will not be distracted by realm
name in subject lines of every email. Users who have multiple
accounts in realms can turn this setting on and receive a
corresponding realm name in email's subject.
Tweaked by tabbott to rebase and address a few small issues.
Fixes#5489.
This is the first step for allowing users
to edit a bot's service entries, name the
outgoing webhook configuration entries. The
chosen data structures allow for a future
with multiple services per bot; right now,
only one service per bot is supported.
This commit adds a setting to limit creation of generic bots
to admins for realms that want that restriction. (Generic
bots, apart from being considered spammy on some realms,
have less locked down permissions than webhook bots).
Fixes#7066.
We no longer have a special UI setting and model
field ("emoji_alt_code") for saying users want text-only
emojis. We now instead make "text" be a fifth choice
for "emojiset".
Fixes#7406
The original logic is buggy now that emails can belong to (and be
invited to) multiple realms.
The new logic in the `invites` queue worker also avoids the bug where
when the PreregistrationUser was gone by the time the queue worker got
to the invite (e.g., because it'd been revoked), we threw an exception.
