Sahil Batra 7f01b3fb63 users: Set tos_version to -1 for users who have not logged-in yet.
We now set tos_version to "-1" for imported users and the ones
created using API or using other methods like LDAP, SCIM and
management commands. This value will help us to allow users to
change email address visibility setting during first login.

Tim Abbott 7051d3416b scheduled_messages: Add reasonable failure handling.
Previously, it seemed possible for the scheduled messages API to try
to send infinite copies of a message if we had the very poor luck of a
persistent failure happening after a message was sent.

The failure_message field supports being able to display what happened
in the scheduled messages modal, though that's not exposed to the API
yet.

Lauryn Menard a5b527f321 onboarding: Specialize Welcome Bot message for education organizations.
Because education organizations and users have slightly specialized
use cases, we update the Welcome Bot message content sent to new
users and new organization owners for these types of organizations
to link to help center articles/guides geared toward these users
and organizations.

Also, updates the demo organization warning to only go to the new
demo organization owner because the 30 day deletion text is only
definitely accurate when the organization is created.

Fixes #21694.

Mateusz Mandera ffa3aa8487 auth: Rewrite data model for tracking enabled auth backends.
So far, we've used the BitField .authentication_methods on Realm
for tracking which backends are enabled for an organization. This
however made it a pain to add new backends (requiring altering the
column and a migration - particularly troublesome if someone wanted to
create their own custom auth backend for their server).

Instead this will be tracked through the existence of the appropriate
rows in the RealmAuthenticationMethods table.

Daniil Fadeev 2f203f4de1 emails: Inline CSS in emails in build_email.
Previously, we had an architecture where CSS inlining for emails was
done at provision time in inline_email_css.py. This was necessary
because the library we were using for this, Premailer, was extremely
slow, and doing the inlining for every outgoing email would have been
prohibitively expensive.

Now that we've migrated to a more modern library that inlines the
small amount of CSS we have into emails nearly instantly, we are able
to remove the complex architecture built to work around Premailer
being slow and just do the CSS inlining as the final step in sending
each individual email.

This has several significant benefits:

* Removes a fiddly provisioning step that made the edit/refresh cycle
for modifying email templates confusing; there's no longer a CSS
inlining step that, if you forget to do it, results in your testing a
stale variant of the email templates.
* Fixes internationalization problems related to translators working
with pre-CSS-inlined emails, and then Django trying to apply the
  translators to the post-CSS-inlined version.
* Makes the send_custom_email pipeline simpler and easier to improve.

Actions like deleting realms may leave unreferenced uploads in the

Fix these by walking the complete contents of the attachment storage

the number of files uploaded to the system.

Anders Kaseorg c1675913a2 web: Move web app to ‘web’ directory.
Ever since we started bundling the app with webpack, there’s been less
and less overlap between our ‘static’ directory (files belonging to
the frontend app) and Django’s interpretation of the ‘static’
directory (files served directly to the web).

Split the app out to its own ‘web’ directory outside of ‘static’, and
remove all the custom collectstatic --ignore rules. This makes it
much clearer what’s actually being served to the web, and what’s being
bundled by webpack. It also shrinks the release tarball by 3%.

Anders Kaseorg 9198fe4fac scim: Downgrade SCIMClient from a model to an ephemeral dataclass.
SCIMClient is a type-unsafe workaround for django-scim2’s conflation
of SCIM users with Django users. Given that a SCIMClient is not a
UserProfile, it might as well not be a model at all, since it’s only
used to satisfy django-scim2’s request.user.is_authenticated queries.

This doesn’t solve the type safety issue with assigning a SCIMClient
to request.user, nor the performance issue with running the SCIM
middleware on non-SCIM requests. But it reduces the risk of potential
consequences worse than crashing, since there’s no longer a
request.user.id for Django to confuse with the ID of an actual
UserProfile.

Mateusz Mandera 43928ca323 import: Remove dead do_import_system_bots code.
This code is actually a noop (and would be a bug if it wasn't a noop),
because when this runs the server is already initialized, meaning the
internal realm exists and the system bots have been created, so
UserProfile.objects.filter(email=email) is always truthy. Also, system
bots are supposed to live in the internal realm, not in the realm being
imported so this code doesn't make sense currently.

Zixuan James Li ab1bbdda65 typing: Broaden type annotations for QuerySet compatibility.
To explain the rationale of this change, for example, there is
`get_user_activity_summary` which accepts either a `Collection[UserActivity]`,
where `QuerySet[T]` is not strictly `Sequence[T]` because its slicing behavior
is different from the `Protocol`, making `Collection` necessary.

Similarily, we should have `Iterable[T]` instead of `List[T]` so that
`QuerySet[T]` will also be an acceptable subtype, or `Sequence[T]` when we
also expect it to be indexed.

Zixuan James Li 10dc6ea39e typing: Narrow connection type before accessing pg_version.
This change is solely for removing the attribute error that mypy raises when we
 access `pg_version` on `connection`. django-stubs annotate `connection` as

use an regular assertion with isinstance to narrow the type.

Anders Kaseorg c263bfdb41 queue: Use a thread-local Pika connection.
According to the documentation: “Pika does not have any notion of
threading in the code. If you want to use Pika with threading, make
sure you have a Pika connection per thread, created in that thread. It
is not safe to share one Pika connection across threads, with one
exception: you may call the connection method add_callback_threadsafe
from another thread to schedule a callback within an active pika
connection.”

https://pika.readthedocs.io/en/stable/faq.html

This also means that synchronous Django code running in Tornado will
use its own synchronous SimpleQueueClient rather than sharing the
asynchronous TornadoQueueClient, which is unfortunate but necessary as
they’re about to be on different threads.

Alex Vandiver 49ad188449 rate_limit: Add a flag to lump all TOR exit node IPs together.
TOR users are legitimate users of the system; however, that system can
also be used for abuse -- specifically, by evading IP-based
rate-limiting.

For the purposes of IP-based rate-limiting, add a
RATE_LIMIT_TOR_TOGETHER flag, defaulting to false, which lumps all
requests from TOR exit nodes into the same bucket. This may allow a
TOR user to deny other TOR users access to the find-my-account and
new-realm endpoints, but this is a low cost for cutting off a
significant potential abuse vector.

If enabled, the list of TOR exit nodes is fetched from their public
endpoint once per hour, via a cron job, and cached on disk. Django
processes load this data from disk, and cache it in memcached.
Requests are spared from the burden of checking disk on failure via a
circuitbreaker, which trips of there are two failures in a row, and
only begins trying again after 10 minutes.

Mateusz Mandera 7cc345d7b1 process_queue: Improve handling of exceptions in process_queue.
Unhandled exceptions propagating to process_queue were not caught there,
causing improper logging - errors didn't land in errors.log as expected.
Exceptions should be caught and explicitly logged by the process_queue
logger. Exceptions occurring during consuming events are caught and
handled inside the worker's logic - however those that happen while
setting up the worker were not addressed at all, and that's the core bug
we mean to address here.

Furthermore, in multi-threaded mode we want the autoreload mechanism to
be working - which it doesn't without catching the exceptions. The
correct approach is to - again - catch the exception, log it and then
send SIGUSR1 signal to trigger exit and autoreload.

Alex Vandiver 4c518c2bba scheduled_email: Consistently lock users table.
Only clear_scheduled_emails previously took a lock on the users before
removing them; make deliver_scheduled_emails do so as well, by using
prefetch_related to ensure that the table appears in the SELECT. This
is not necessary for correctness, since all accesses of
ScheduledEmailUser first access the ScheduledEmail and lock it; it is
merely for consistency.

Since SELECT ... FOR UPDATE takes an UPDATE lock on all tables
mentioned in the SELECT, merely doing the prefetch is sufficient to
lock both tables; no `on=(...)` is needed to `select_for_update`.

This also does not address the pre-existing potential deadlock from
these two use cases, where both try to lock the same ScheduledEmail
rows in opposite orders.

Alex Vandiver e94b6afb00 nagios: Remove broken check_email_deliverer_* checks and related code.
These checks suffer from a couple notable problems:
 - They are only enabled on staging hosts -- where they should never
be run. Since ef6d0ec5ca, these supervisor processes are only
run on one host, and never on the staging host.
 - They run as the `nagios` user, which does not have appropriate
permissions, and thus the checks always fail. Specifically,
`nagios` does not have permissions to run `supervisorctl`, since
the socket is owned by the `zulip` user, and mode 0700; and the
`nagios` user does not have permission to access Zulip secrets to
   run `./manage.py print_email_delivery_backlog`.

Rather than rewrite these checks to run on a cron as zulip, and check
those file contents as the nagios user, drop these checks -- they can
be rewritten at a later point, or replaced with Prometheus alerting,
and currently serve only to cause always-failing Nagios checks, which
normalizes alert failures.

Leave the files installed if they currently exist, rather than
cluttering puppet with `ensure => absent`; they do no harm if they are
left installed.
