# Rename a topic
help: Reorganize articles on editing topics. * Move content on moving topics between streams to a dedicated article. We advertise it as "move content" to hint that one can move messages or split topics, and link to it. * This deletes change-the-topic-of-a-message, because the same content is already covered in rename-a-topic. * This commit mostly just moves content between articles. Most of that content was redundant with the first few paragraphs of the surviving "rename a topic" article. The former "This is useful for" se ntence was adapted to the remaining article. * This commit also adds a redirect for the removed article, and updates related links.

By default, any user can rename any topic within a stream, and change the
topic of any message. This is useful for keeping messages organized even
if some users are still learning how to use topics effectively.
Organization administrators can additionally
[move topics](/help/move-content-to-another-stream#move-a-topic-to-another-stream)
from one stream to another, or
[move a subset of messages](/help/move-content-to-another-stream#move-messages-in-a-topic-to-another-stream)
to a topic from one stream to another.
Organization administrators can also
[configure who can edit topics](/help/configure-who-can-edit-topics),
[move topics](/help/configure-message-editing-and-deletion#configure-who-can-move-topics-between-streams),
or turn off message editing entirely. See the

for the details on when topic editing is allowed.
messages: Allow moving a topic to another stream. This completes the implementation of support for moving a topic to another stream by adding a basic UI for it. Fixes #6427, which was previously the most-upvoted issue request in Zulip. There are likely to be a bunch of follow-up UI improvements on top of this change to fully flesh out the feature.

1. Select the first option. It may be called **View source / Edit topic**,
or simply **Edit**. If it's called **View source**, then you are not
allowed to edit the topic of that message.

help: Add an article about moving content to another topic. This commit addresses @timabbott 's comments, by adding a new article "Move content to another topic". Thanks to the new article, I also simplified a step from the "Rename a topic" article to keep it focused on renaming only.

1. Pick **Change previous and following messages to this topic** from the
dropdown to the right.
message_edit: Add support for changing stream of a message. * This feature is currently only visible to admins. * Locally echoed messages are also updated. * Add UI for editing stream if user is admin. * Show propagate mode selector if either stream or topic changed.
